Located in the highlands of South Sulawesi, Toraja's spectacular nature hides ancient traditions. Toraja means people of the uplands and is home to an indigenous group known as Torajans.
Torajans have the most complex funeral system in the world. When visiting, you can tour:
1. Londa, the ancient cave cemetery. You'll find a popular burial cave below a massive cliff.
2. Kete Kesu, the ancient village of the ethnic Tana Toraja people. Watch the Manganda dance performance.
3. Kalimbuang Bori, the megalith stones located in Seasean Village. There are a total of 24 large stones, 24 medium, and 54 small. They come as part of a ceremony when community leaders die.

Stone Graves of Toraja Land: Sulawesi, Indonesia
There are different methods of Torajan burial. Inside a huge rock (stone burial), in cliffs or caves, hanging off cliffs and then new modern way. Concrete and always above ground.
You don't have to go very far from Rantepao (capital of Tana Toraja) to see these usual stone graves. We visited these during our day hike. There were still excursions to the Baby Tree, Effigies and Hanging Graves coming on today's agenda...
Toraja rituals, Sulawesi
Toraja rituelen. Toraja rituals, Sulawesi, Indonesia
The most spectacular of Torajan rituals are the funerals. For Torajan, a funeral is the single most important ceremony in the life cycle. It is based on a strong belief that the soul of the deceased travels to the land of the south and in this land of eternity, he will need all the requisites of everyday life in the hereafter just like when he was alive in this world. Funeral ceremonies are festival lasting as long as ten days with much feasting and entertainment. Animal sacrifices are made to ensure eternal life in the afterlife and to safeguard the descendants.
A funeral is a festive event for every member of the society. When the funeral is held by noble families then the ceremony will usually involve great fanfare. Buffaloes and pigs are sacrificed as an indication of status and as repayment for gifts received. This ceremony may take days, weeks or months after the actual death and the decreased is referred to as a sick man until he is buried.
Various types of graves are located in Cliffside caves, mountain ledges or in special houses reserved for the dead. The graves in Tana Toraja are made in huge rocks because of their strength and relative safety from animals and thieves. There are many of these graves in the different mountains. And some are well guarded by life-size wooden statues of the persons buried. (toraja-info.com)

INDONESIA: Tomate (funeral ceremony) at Lemo, Sulawesi (HD-video).mp4
A deceased person is kept at home until the funeral ceremony has been organized. That can take months (luckily they are embalmed).
The ceremony can last for 4 or 5 days (depending on the position of the deceased).
It is the most important social event in Tana Toraja (Sulawesi).
Many pigs and buffaloes are slaughtered for the occasion in front of all attendants.
In this video I have not included such scenes.
Londa's Entombed Effigies Toraja Sulawesi, Indonesia
Becoming expert in Torajan furneral practices, we visited Londa's cliff burials. Hard to believe that people climb to the top of the cliff with the coffin and then lower it into a cave.
Ancient wooden coffins, skulls and bones on the ground from where they had fallen with age. Eventually, the remains will be reburied. Slightly creepy....extremely interesting with still different sites to visit...
Baby Tree Burials in Sulawesi, Indonesia
At one time, low class people buried their newborn to 2-week old dead babies in a Banyan Tree. (Watch the video for entire explanation.) Every day was jam-packed with people to see...places to go...and even more ancient sites and traditions.
Also, ancient culture translated into modern day life like the village building traditional Torajan granaries (rice barns)....

The Ghosts of Sulawesi - Now In High Quality! (Part 5/5)
The island of Sulawesi, the orchid-shaped island, is home to an ethnic group that has managed to remain oblivious to all settlements: Toraja, members of a society that still holds its ancestral beliefs and customs. In this fiercely hierarchical community, their own religious beliefs (called Aluk To Dolo), have their maximum expression in the funeral rites. During this chapter we will see the development of one of these ceremonies in honor of an important member of the Toraja community.
