Gliding at London Gliding Club Dunstable Downs
Join us as we soar in a glider in the skies above Dunstable Downs near Luton. We had a taster day at the London Gliding Club which included three flights to see if we wanted to become a glider pilot and join the club.
I did two of my three flights but felt queasy towards the end of each flight, so I offered my final flight to my wife Jill. She said yes and went for it! She absolutely loved it, you can see her delight on the video. I enjoyed the experience and got to fly the glider on both flights. Flights lasted about 30 - 40 minutes. On my first flight we were towed to 2,000ft and then got lift up to 3,000ft almost straight away. The weather was gorgeous all day with loads of thermals and lift.
We all thouroughly enjoyed the whole day. We met with Barry and Tina were also with us for the whole day, Barry like me was there for 3 flights. He is wearing the pale blue t-shirt and is the second one to go up in the video.
Thank you to the ground crew who looked after us on the ground and prepared the gliders for each flight and to our instructor Mike who all made us feel welcome and looked after us in the air and on the ground.
Shame I was not a great flyer, otherwise I would have been keen to join - hey ho. At least I've done it and look back at on the day with fond memories. If you are interested in having a go then contact the club, they are all volunteers and very welcoming and supportive. They have a range of flight experiances available from single flights to a 5 day course!

Each year up to nine students from three inner city schools in London are selected to participate in the Boeing Gliding to Solo Scheme.
After passing a rigorous selection process earlier this year that is managed in conjunction with Air League corporate supporters British Airways at their global headquarters the students have been enrolled on an intensive two-week gliding course at the London Gliding Club in Dunstable, where they are trained by expert pilots and mentored by experienced professionals from the Air League with the ultimate goal of flying solo.

Dunstable Regionals - Day 2
Taking off, climbing out and making my first proper competition start at the Dunstable Regionals in August 2011. I ended up getting caught by spreadout and landing out just before the 50% mark after flying about 95km away from the club making the retrieve a long one for my crew. But so much fun and made up with a decent finish on Day 3 and a joint second place on Day 4.

[Wikipedia] Little Gaddesden
Little Gaddesden is a village and civil parish in the English county of Hertfordshire three miles north of Berkhamsted. As well as Little Gaddesden village (population 694), the parish contains the settlements of Ashridge (population 53), Hudnall (population 139), and part of Ringshall (population 81). The total population at the 2011 Census was 1,125.
Part of the parish was formerly in Buckinghamshire. This includes Witchcraft Bottom, notable as the alleged location where the last witch in Buckinghamshire was tried and hanged. The village of Little Gaddesden borders both Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, whilst being situated in the county of Hertfordshire.
Little Gaddesden and the surrounding area of the Ashridge Estate is owned and managed by the National Trust. This area has been used in many films, notably: First Knight, Stardust, the Harry Potter series, Son of Rambow and more recently Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe. The Ashridge Estate that surrounds the village is a 5,000-acre (20 km2) area of open countryside and woodland on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, with a rich variety of wildlife including fallow dear, muntjac and the renowned red kite. There are large areas of mature woodlands with carpets of spring bluebells and fine autumnal displays, along with the panorama from the Bridgewater Monument. In the early 17th century, Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley, had purchased Ashridge House, one of the largest country houses in England, from Queen Elizabeth I, who had inherited it from her father who had appropriated it after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. Ashridge House served the Egerton family as a residence until the 19th century. The Egertons later had a family chapel (the Bridgewater Chapel) with burial vault in Little Gaddesden Church, where many monuments commemorate the Dukes and Earls of Bridgewater and their families. Among those buried here is the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, famous as the originator of British inland navigation and the Bridgewater Canal.
Little Gaddesden is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and a Conservation Area protected by the National Trust.
