Long Biên Bridge, Hanoi — Vietnam
On our recent travels to Vietnam we fell in love with the people, culture, streetscapes, food and sites of Hanoi as many do – one of them being the Long Bien Bridge, truly one of the sites you have to go and experience first hand while in Hanoi.

114 YEAR OLD Long Biên Bridge and Getting SOAKED in a FREAK RAIN STORM | LIFE IN VIETNAM
Let's explore this 114 year old, iconic bridge in Hanoi, Vietnam. It has survived bombings and the elements. Also, watch as I get caught in a sudden rain storm that ends up flooding the streets of Hanoi, leaving me completely wet from head to toe.
The Long Biên Bridge was built by architects Daydé & Pillé of Paris. Construction was from 1899 - 1902, and the bridge was officially opened in 1903. The bridge uses a cantilever design.
The bridge was heavily bombed during the Vietnam War, and was also one of the first targets of U.S. military's first laser-guided bombs. More than half of the current bridge is not the original from 1899.
There are some efforts to restore this bridge to its once original appearance. The reconstruction and renovations are on-going.
As for the heavy rains, this was not a random storm out of nowhere. It rains like this all the time, almost every day, during rainy season in Vietnam. This was just my first time being caught out in the middle of it, while riding on the back of a motorbike.

Slice of life Vietnam - Long Bien Bridge, Hanoi
Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi was one of Asia's great bridges when inaugurated by the French in 1901 at the height of empire building. During the Vietnam War, it was a key supply line, connecting Hanoi with the port city of Haiphong.
It was repeatedly bombed by US fighters and was bravely defended. Its war-time symbolism has made it a very Hanoian icon in modern times just as city officials are deliberating on its demolition or a major upgrade.
This video was shot in 2009 at an event held in preparation for Hanoi's 1000th anniversary celebrations in 2010.
The girls at the end are spruiking nuoc voi using rhyme and Vietnamese legend. Nuoc voi is a very Hanoian specialty tea.
Trip Report: Long Bien Bridge, Hanoi, Vietnam.
this video is about the amazing historical Long Bien Bridge , it is long and good so aptly named. It goes across the red river to the west on Hanoi and was designed by the same architects that designed the Eiffel Tower. The bridge has sustained lots of damage in the vietnam war but is being slowly rebuilt. I found it quite sceary to walk across but worth it for the views and my trip to the island in the middle of the river.

Guide to Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi - VietnamOnline.com
The Long Bien Bridge was constructed from 1989 to 1902 during French's occupation of the country. Though the bridge was designed by French, it was built directly by Vietnamese workers with indigenous construction materials like woods from Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Thanh Hoa province, cement form Hai Phong, Long Tho lime from Hue. The bridge was formerly named Paul Doumer by the French, but Vietnamese have called it Long Bien or Cai River Bridge for a long time, and Long Bien becomes the most popular name of the bridge.

Trains on the Long Bien Bridge Hanoi (Vietnam)
Long Bien Bridge (Vietnamese: Cầu Long Biên) is a historic cantilever bridge across the Red River that connects two parts of the city of Hanoi, Vietnam.
The bridge was built in 1903 by the French architects of Daydé & Pillé.
When it was built, it was one of the longest bridges in Asia with the length of 2,500 m. For the French colonial government, the construction was of strategic importance in securing control of northern Vietnam. From 1899 to 1902, more than 3,000 Vietnamese took part in the construction.
The Long Bien Bridge was heavily bombarded during Vietnam War due to its critical position (the only bridge at that time across the Red River and connect Hanoi to the main port Haiphong). The first attack took place in 1967.
The defence of Long Bien Bridge continues to play a large role in Hanoi's self-image and is often extolled in poetry and song.
Some parts of the original structure remain intact, while large sections have been built later to repair the holes. Only half of the bridge retains its original shape.
Hanoi Vietnam | Long Bien Bridge
I cross the Red River via the Long Bien Bridge Hanoi Vietnam. There is enough room for a single train, motorbikes, bikes and a single lane for pedestrians. It does get a bit tight at times.
The Long Bien Bridge was opened in 1903 and has seen better and worse days. Read about its history on Wikipedia. It's well worth the walk which in total is around a 4 km (2.5 miles) round trip.

LONG BIEN BRIDGE, HANOI Vietnam: Journey Across Long Bien Bridge - HANOI, Vietnam
Come with us on a journey on foot across Long Bien Bridge, Hanoi, Vietnam. Along the way, you will see the congested motorcycle traffic making its way across both sides of the bride, which crosses the red River. You will also witness locals taking their exercises on the bridge and witness the arrival of the longest train in Vietnam, as it arrives at Long Bien Station. Long Bien links the two Hanoi regions of Hoan Kiem and Long Bien Bridge was built between 1899-1902 and was opened in 1903, so it 112 years old at the date this video was uploaded. It was originally called the Paul Doumer Bridge and was designed by Gustav Eiffel, the same architect who designed the Eiffel Tower, in Paris. At 2.4 km (1.5 miles) long, it was one of the longest bridges in Asia when it was built. It was attacked by the Americans during the Vietnam war, when the centre span was knocked out in 1967, but this did not cause too much disruption. However, it was rendered unusable for a year when it was hit by laser guided smart bombs in May 1972.

One round walking of Long Bien Bridge, Hanoi, Vietnam
The bridge was built in 1899-1902 by the architects Daydé & Pillé of Paris, and was inaugurated in 1903. Before North Vietnam became independent in 1954, it was called Paul- Doumer, named after Paul Doumer - Governor General of French Indochina and then President of France. With a length of 2.4 km, at the time, this was one of the longest bridges in Asia. One thing that few people know about the bridge is that it was the second longest bridge in the world (just after the Brooklyn Bridge across the US East-River River), even known as the horizontal Eiffel Tower of Hanoi.
From 1899 to 1902, more than 3,000 Vietnamese participated in the construction. Long Bien Bridge is the first steel bridge to cross the Red River connecting Hanoi's Hoan Kiem and Long Bien districts. The bridge is designed with a single rail running in the middle and two lanes for bicycles and pedestrians. For the French colonial government, construction was of strategic importance in securing control of northern Vietnam.
The Long Bien Bridge witnessed the most important milestones of Vietnam in the two largest wars of resistance against the French colonialist and then the resistance against the American imperialism. Also witnessing the constant changes of Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general. Experiencing many ups and downs of time and historical events, the bridge still stands and becomes one of the symbols of Hanoi. Therefore, Long Bien Bridge is called historical witness of Vietnam.

[하노이 여행] 롱비엔 철교의 추억 | Long Biên Bridge in Hanoi
정오의 하노이 | Long Biên Bridge
- Long Biên Bridge
When French colony occupied ancient Vietnam, Long Bien Bridge was constructed. From 1889 to 1902, Vietnam workers built the bridage who bridge designed by Daybe and Pille.
Daybe and Pille are French architects.
Actually, French called the bridge named Paul Doumer but
Vietnamese have called ‘Long Bien Bridge.’
The metal bridge across Red river in Hanoi.
The steel bridge was one of the remarkable construction all of world in those day.
- My Impression
My first impression was “awesome” that old enough steel
giant passage still play role as a part of Northern Vietnam economical purpose. Second, I never visit Paris and I never seen ‘Eiffel Tower’ but I felt this bridge must relative with the tower where I watch on TV. Maybe, two construction relative each other due to they born same period time. Once I visited Long Bien then now I am so curious about how it looks like ‘Eiffel Tower.' In the future, I wish I could compare both French constructions that I travel to Paris so on.

The Long Bien Bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the man of Eiffel Tower fame, and completed in 1902. The clips are filmed under the bridge, on the bridge and coming off the island in the Red River that the bridge crosses.
