Walhalla Long Tunnel Extended Mine Wheelchair Friendly
This video is about Walhalla Long Tunnel Extended Mine Wheelchair Friendly. 7 mins of the day we spent at Walhalla. We took the train at 11am for an hour, had lunch and then proceeded to the Long Tunnel tour. I would recommend when pushing a wheelchair put one side of the wheelchair outside of the rails, makes it a lot easier to push. Also, if you push a chair up to the cemetery make sure you put the brakes on when you stop to do something... don't want your best buddy slding down the hill. Great day out, loads to see, 5 out of 5 for the long tunnel tour.
Walhalla
Walhalla was once a busy gold mining centre and one of Australia's richest towns, and today an historic township in Gippsland's alpine wilderness.
Past to Present - Walhalla History - Old Gold Mining Town
Walhalla, Victoria, 2011. I found some old photos from the 1880s during the Gold Rush. There is a lot of history in Walhalla and I took the time to find the original locations from the 1880s photos while I was there in 2011. I have stayed here many of times before.
If you ever get the time to visit this historic town, I would recommend it.
A lot to see and do: Bush walking, camping, fishing, 4WD 4x4, Long Tunnel Extended Mine tour, goldfields railway, train ride, train station, panning for gold, visiting the old cemetery and the old cricket oval, admire the beauty of the Thompson River, go camping at Copper's Creek and/or delving into some Australian history.
I would also recommend a meal at the Wally Pub; fantastic parmas!

Walhalla Gold Mine Scenic Drive, Victoria.
WATCH IN HD.
This video takes us on a scenic drive from Thomson Station through Walhalla and then back to Walhalla Station where we turn into Happy Go Lucky Rd and head for the historic Bruntons Bridge.
Walhalla is located in the steep Stringers Creek Valley on the Great Dividing Range, 130 km east/southeast of Melbourne, Victoria.
The township is mainly located along one road which winds along the valley floor.
Gold was discovered in 1862 and by late 1863 there had been more finds made nearby at Happy-Go-Lucky and Cooper's Creek but the vast majority of gold extraction from Walhalla centred on Cohens Reef, the largest single reef in Victoria. By 1900 the reef had already produced around 55 tonnes of gold and was home to around 4,000 residents.
Prior to the construction of the railway in 1910 the only access to Walhalla was via Bruntons Bridge which crossed the Thomson River 6.5 km to the south-south/east.
Once completed, the Walhalla line, from Moe crossed hilly farming country until it reached the town of Erica where it entered heavily mountainous territory crossing the Thomson River by means of a large steel and concrete bridge then snaking up Stringer's Creek Gorge.
It was hoped that the railway would bring new life back into the community, however gold mining was already becoming largely unprofitable and the last of the major mines closed in 1914. The rail line closed in 1944.
Notably, In 1998 Walhalla became the last mainland town in Australia to be connected the electricity grid.

Walhalla Gold Experience Tour in Victoria by Grasshopper Travel
The Mine Manager, Geoff Anderson will conduct a technical tour of the Mine by arrangement. Geoff is an experienced Mining Engineer having worked first as a miner in the deep gold mines of Kalgoorlie and in the tin mines on the west coast of Tasmania – and later as an engineer in most countries of South-east Asia. The tour will last a little under two hours and the tour group will be limited in size to 10 people. During the tour, overhand backfilled stope mining methods used in deep quartz reef mines will be explained with discussion on how these methods have developed into the 21st Century. The group will also learn how the mine was ventilated, kept dry and lit. Haulage methods in the Long Tunnel Extended Mine, and its neighbour, the Long Tunnel Mine were unique and arrangements for vertical and horizontal haulage will be explained. After the tour the group will enjoy tea or coffee while viewing plans of the Mine’s 8½ kilometres of underground workings. Each tour is conducted by a Mine Guide who is familiar with the Mine's history and the history of Walhalla. Tours are informative as well as entertaining. The Mine is managed by an experienced Mining Engineer and the Mine is operated under strict State Government enforced protocols. The safety of our patrons and staff is of paramount importance.
