Longhirst Hall in the spotlight
The spotlight has been turned on the history of a former stately home, near Morpeth, Northumberland.
Longhirst Hall, now an hotel and conference centre and also the base for a golf course as well as a cricket, hockey and tennis club, was once owned by a coal baron said to be the richest man in the country.
In war-time is was requisitioned by the Army and later became a Home Office approved school.
Here local historian and author Neil Taylor tells its story as part of a series of Heritage Open Days organised by the Greater Morpeth Development Trust.
Longhirst thanks its volunteer litter pickers
VOLUNTEERS who help keep their village spick and span have been thanked for their work.
The Longhirst Litter Pickers were established 15 years ago after residents became fed up with the state of their highways and byways.
A monthly sweep of the approaches to the Northumberland village yields sackloads of litter, and is made up of everything including the proverbial kitchen sink.
The ‘clean team’ reckon they have collected more than 1,000 bags of rubbish over the years, including enough vehicle parts to make a car!
But the worst offenders continue to be motorists who discard fast food wrappers, drinks cans and plastic bottles.
Chris Lediard, who leads the clean-up crew, said: “We have lived in the village for more than 40 years, the problem was getting worse and worse, and nobody was going to do anything about it. We put a note in the village newsletter appealing for volunteer litter pickers to tidy the place up and had a huge response which has continued to grow, but sadly so has the amount of litter we have to pick up.”
Longhirst Parish Council, which supports the group by providing reflective tabards, sacks and litter grabbers, marked their 15 years of voluntary effort with a celebration cake.

Golfers make a splash for charity in Northumberland
GOLFERS braved squally showers at Longhirst, Northumberland, today to help raise funds for a disability charity,
The Percy Hedley Foundation provides services for adults and children.
It is currently trying to raise £1m through its Splash Appeal for a new state of the art hydrotherapy pool at Killingworth as part of a wider capital project for a 24-bed residential unit.
Today’s Percy Hedley Cup golf competition is the third to be held over the Longhirst course.
Organiser Richard Atthey has a special association with the charity because his brother benefited from its help for many years.
He used his contacts in the golf industry to organise the event, in which more than 140 golfers took part.

Goswick Level Crossing
Wednesday August 17 2016 at 7.52. 66168 pulling trucks that left Mossend Euroterminal in North Lanarkshire at 15.11 bound for South Bank Dock on the Tees (23.03). This is 7.5 miles from Scotland and 2.2 miles north of Beal LC. There used to be 4 tracks between here and Beal and a station with a platform each side of the crossing until 1958. It was bombed in 1941 and a train machine gunned. In Oct 1947 due to engineering work on the main line here trains were diverted on to the slow line. At 12.47 the Flying Scotsman heading for London failed to respond to warning signals and took the 15 mph points by the platform at 60 mph. Most of the train overturned and 28 people were killed. In the same fortnight 36 people were killed at rail crashes in South Croydon and Motspur Park. There were also derailments here in 1907 and 1953. In 1978 barriers were installed. In December 2014 a 43 year old woman took her life here.
