Drivng Fort Worth Stockyards, Texas 2018
The Fort Worth Stockyards is a historic district that is located in Fort Worth, Texas, north of the central business district. The 98-acre (40 ha) district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District in 1976. They are a former livestock market which operated under various owners from 1866.
The arrival of [railroad]s in 1876 made the area a very important livestock center. Fort Worth Union Stockyards opened for business on January 19, 1890, covering 206 acres. On February 7, the Fort Worth Dressed Meat and Packing Company was founded. This facility was operated without profit until purchased by G. W. Simpson of Boston. In an effort to produce revenue, they reached out to the Swift and Armour companies to establish packing houses. By 1886, four stockyards had been built near the railroads. Boston capitalist Greenleif W. Simpson, with a half dozen Boston and Chicago associates, incorporated the Fort Worth Stock Yards Company on March 23, 1893, and purchased the Union Stock Yards and the Fort Worth Packing Company. The Stockyards experienced early success. By 1907, the Stockyards sold a million cattle per year. The stockyards was an organized place where cattle, sheep, and hogs could be bought, sold and slaughtered. Fort Worth remained an important part of the cattle industry until the 1950s. Business suffered due to livestock auctions held closer to where the livestock were originally produced.
The Fort Worth Stockyards now celebrates Fort Worth's long tradition as a part of the cattle industry and was listed on the National Register as a historical district in 1976. The listing included 46 contributing buildings and one other contributing structure.
The Stockyards consist of mainly entertainment and shopping venues that capitalize on the Cowtown image of Fort Worth. Home to the famous boot making company M.L. Leddy's which is located in the heart of the Stockyards and The Maverick Fine Western Wear and Saloon where customers can 'belly up' to the bar, relax and have a cold beer while in the Stockyards; just like they did in the days of the big cattle drives, as they shop around the store. The city of Fort Worth is often referred to as Where the West Begins. Many bars and nightclubs (including Billy Bob's Texas) are located in the vicinity, and the area has a Western motif. There is also an opry and a rodeo. The Fort Worth Stockyards are the last standing stockyards in the United States. Some volunteers still run the cattle drives through the stockyards, a practice developed in the late 19th century by the frontiersman Charles Buffalo Jones, who herded buffalo calves through the streets of Garden City, Kansas.
On April 1, 2011, the Fort Worth Stockyards Stables were remodeled and reopened. They are located next door to the Hyatt hotel in an original Historic Stockyards building that was built in 1912. These stables offer full care boarding, overnight boarding, hourly boarding, horse rentals on the open trails of the Trinity River and carriage rides. Boarders can ride their horses all around the Historic Stockyards.

Humongous Horns: Texas Longhorn From Alabama Sets Guinness World RecordSix-year-old Poncho Via doesn't reside in the Lone Star State, but he set the Guinness World Record for possessing the longest set of horns on any other Texas longhorn ever.
Last month the steer's horns were measured from tip to tip at 10 feet, 7.4 inches. In comparison, Ponchos' spread is more than twice the width of a concert grand piano.
Poncho was raised by the Pope family on a small-town farm in Goodwater, Alabama. In 2013, Jeral Pope Sr. reached out to a local veterinarian asking for assistance in finding a pet longhorn — a fascination that came from a road trip out West, where the elder Pope saw longhorn cattle and decided he had to have one.
Once connected to a rodeo supplier, Pope Sr. purchased the 6-month-old animal who's been their gentle giant ever since. The name Poncho Via is a play on the famous Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.
Months before Pope Sr. received Poncho, his son Dennis Pope bought himself a longhorn named Moo. Dennis remembers having friendly competition with his dad during the early years of their steers' lives.
We would measure each others horns when they were young and ours was always a little ahead of that one, Dennis told NPR. Until the horn shape on ours took a big turn up and Poncho's kept going out straight and it kept growing and growing.
The Pope family has since kept a close eye on the length of Poncho's horns, waiting for them to expand long enough to break the record. They even checked previous steers' measurements to see what they were up against and noticed how much Poncho was growing for his age.
They were all 9 to 12 to 15-years-old when they were measured for the world record and Poncho's much younger than that, he said. There's no telling how much he'll grow.
However, despite his promising future, Poncho did not meet the records' standards until days before Guinness verified his length this year.
I measured him in April and he was not above the world record, he grew a half inch of horn length from April to May, Dennis said.
Similar to their weight gain, horn growth occurs quickly during their early years, then levels off as they grow older, according to the Texas Longhorn Journal. Although a longhorn is built to manage the length and weight of their rack, the Pope family said the public has expressed some concern regarding Poncho's horns. Dennis ensures that Poncho is adaptable, smart and has learned exactly where the tips of his horns are.
He can run through the trees on the farm...he knows where any post is, any obstacle, he just tips his head and goes on. It's amazing to see him run. Dennis said.
The steer unseated fellow record-holder and Texas-based longhorn Sato by just over an inch. Poncho will turn 7-years-old on October 3rd.

Neglected longhorns from Hill County now up for adoption
More than 200 cattle are ready to be adopted after being seized by the Hill County Sheriff’s Department.
The animals were taken from a ranch in February. Many were malnourished and a few had to be euthanized because they were living in such poor conditions.
The Humane Society of North Texas was awarded custody of them and has been nursing them back to health at its ranch in Joshua.
We don't want them to be a trophy,” said Cassie Lackey with the Humane Society of North Texas. “And we don't want them to go to slaughter.
The animals are described as longhorns and longhorn cross breeds – 20 bulls, 13 steers, 63 heifers, 87 cows and 29 calves.
People who adopt the longhorns will have to agree to keep them for life.
“They are iconic,” Lackey said. “They are Texas Longhorns — the epitome of true Texas spirit.
The humane society says the longhorns and longhorn cross cattle hadn't been adequately cared for. And as the weather got hotter, there was little grass or water to find on their own.
Heather Hardin and her kids hope to adopt a couple longhorns to roam on their 10 acres.
I'm glad they are getting the nutrition they need seem to be very happy out here,” she said. “We are happy to apply for some of these and get them onto our property.”
Adoption fees will be close to market value to discourage the new owners from selling the cattle for a profit or slaughter.
The humane society say they are getting a lot of interest in the longhorn adoptions. Everyone will be vetted to insure they have adequate land.
Anyone who adopts them must agree they will not be sold or slaughtered. For more information, visit hsnt.org/horses-and-livestock/
