Longmen Grottoes, Longboarding, and a Water Park! Vlog 7 Luoyang China
Our time in Luoyang came to an end but not without having a few last big adventures. We bought some long boards and they turned out to be one of the best purchases we made. There was a little bit of a learning curve and there were only a few crashes. We also were able to experience a few new places such as the Longmen Grottoes. and a water park!

Update from Luoyang, China: 10 City Bridge Run
The running stunt for the 10 City Bridge Run was completed on a cold, wet and dark night in New York at the beginning of January 2015. Now the real work begins to turn our attention to the Design Forum asking: 'how might we use our networks to deliver of the promise to improve child survival?' This video is from Luoyang, Henan Province in China, outside the Longman Grottoes and marked that moment in time when the conversation had been picked up again after a short hiatus. Thanks to all our supporters for being part of this important journey.

China. officially the People's Republic of China, is a country in East Asia and the world's most populous country, with a population of around 1.404 billion. Covering approximately 9,600,000 square kilometers, it is the third- or fourth-largest country by total area.
Luoyang, City in China
Luoyang is an industrial city in central China’s Henan province, in what is widely recognized as the region where Chinese civilization originated. Luoyang, ancient China’s capital during multiple dynasties, is home to Baima Si (White Horse Temple), among China’s first Buddhist temples, founded in the 1st century. Nearby, the Longmen Grottoes contain thousands of Buddhist rock carvings dating to the 5th century.
Longmen Grottoes
The Longmen Grottoes (simplified Chinese: 龙门石窟; traditional Chinese: 龍門石窟; pinyin: Lóngmén Shíkū; literally: 'Dragon's Gate Grottoes') or Longmen Caves are some of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Buddha and his disciples, they are located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) south of present-day Luoyang in Henan province, China. The images, many once painted, were carved as outside rock reliefs and inside artificial caves excavated from the limestone cliffs of the Xiangshan (香山) and Longmenshan, running east and west. The Yi River (Chinese: 伊河) flows northward between them and the area used to be called Yique (伊阙; 'The Gate of the Yi River').[1][2][3] The alternative name of Dragon's Gate Grottoes derives from the resemblance of the two hills that check the flow of the Yi River to the typical Chinese gate towers that once marked the entrance to Luoyang from the south.[4] There are as many as 100,000 statues within the 2,345 caves, ranging from 1 inch (25 mm) to 57 feet (17 m) in height. The area also contains nearly 2,500 stelae and inscriptions, hence the name “Forest of Ancient Stelae, as well as over sixty Buddhist pagodas. Situated in a scenic natural environment, the caves were dug from a 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) stretch of cliff running along both banks of the river. 30% date from the Northern Wei and 60% from the Tang dynasty, caves from other periods accounting for less than 10% of the total.[3] Starting with the Northern Wei Dynasty in 493 AD, patrons and donors included emperors, Wu Zetian, members of the royal family, other rich families, generals, and religious groups.[1][5]
In 2000 the site was inscribed upon the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity,” for its perfection of an art form, and for its encapsulation of the cultural sophistication of Tang China.
White Horse Temple
White Horse Temple (simplified Chinese: 白马寺; traditional Chinese: 白馬寺; pinyin: Báimǎ Sì; Wade–Giles: Pai-ma szu) is, according to tradition, the first Buddhist temple in China, established in 68 AD under the patronage of Emperor Ming in the Eastern Han dynasty capital Luoyang.
The site is just outside the walls of the ancient Eastern Han capital, some 12–13 kilometres (7.5–8.1 mi) east of Luoyang in Henan Province. It is approximately 40 minutes by bus No. 56 from Luoyang railway station.[4] The temple, although small in comparison to many others in China, is considered by most believers as the cradle of Chinese Buddhism.[5] The geographical landmarks to the south are Manghan mountain and Lucoche River.[6]
The main temple buildings, a large complex, were reconstructed during the Ming (1368 to 1644) and Qing (1644 to 1912) dynasties.[7] They were refurbished in the 1950s, and again in March 1973 after the Cultural Revolution. It has numerous halls divided by courtyards and manicured gardens, covering an area of about 13 hectares (32 acres). The display plaques in Chinese and English give ample descriptions of the Buddhist deities installed in the halls. Significant statues include Śākyamuni Buddha, Maitreya (the laughing Buddha in China), the Jade Buddha, figures of saints such as Guru Avalokiteśvara, Amitābha and arhats and stone statues of the two white horses which brought the Indian monks to China and two mythical lions at the entrance.[1][2][3] Under international funding, the temple has undergone many changes, both structurally and internally. The most recent cooperative project, with India, was completed in 2008 when the Sanchi Stupa and the Sarnath Buddha statue were erected.

Wudang to Shaolin -China VLOG 38-Longmen Grottoes-White Horse Temple-Luoyang-Old Town Market
Today we leave Shaolin. We take a 3 hour bus ride to Louyang. Here we see the famous and incredible Longmen Grottoes. Home to over 100,000 Buhhas carved into the cliff. Then we visit White Horse Temple, the oldest Buddhist Temple in China, where our Master Shi Guo Song was ordained as a Buddhist Monk. Then, we finish the day at the most lively outdoor night market I've seen, the Luoyang Old Town Market.
(China part 4) Luoyang: Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple
After leaving the Shaolin Temple and with pants and shoes still wet from the downpour, we drove 2 hours to Luoyang city. Being my guide’s hometown, she looked forward to returning there and told me stories of growing up in this bustling metropolis of a city. She explained that the only reason that Luoyang isn’t as huge as Shanghai or Beijing are is mainly due to lack of a metro system. It’s said that ancient artifacts dating back several dynasties are still undiscovered underground so if they started digging out tunnels, they would have to stop and contact archeologists each time before they can continue again. There’s said to be a large & unknown number of artifacts scattered everywhere underground in this city so the Chinese government decided it wasn’t worth the chance of damaging or destroying antiquities just to build one. Once we got in town, I checked in my hotel and Snow suggested I check out a local underground shopping mall. Since I was on my feet all day long, I decided to skip it and instead get some rest. The next morning, I had breakfast and met up again with Snow and we headed to The Longmen Grottoes (04:13). Created during the Tang Dynasty, it’s filled thousands of Buddhist sculptures carved into the Limestone rock over a course of 600 years. Visiting this place brought back a lot of childhood memories for my guide, who said she used to visit here with her family. As we’re going from going from place to place, I can’t help but notice the fine detail in the sculptures and how some Buddha sculptures look very different than others. The main grotto has some of the biggest Buddhist sculptures at the site, with the biggest one being the Vairocana Buddha (14:06). After we headed further south where we crossed the Manshui bridge to get to the Eastern side of the Yi river. Going across with other tourists, friendly kids came up to me to practice their English phrases: “Hello”, “How are you”.
Afterwards we headed to the White Horse Temple which known for being the first Buddhist temple in China (15:06). Built in the Eastern Han Dynasty, it’s known as the center of Chinese Buddhism and has been architecturally upgraded throughout several Dynasties, even currently. When we walked inside, there were some tourists that were there, but not crowded. As Snow started explaining the history, she caught glimpse of the temple’s Abbot and became very excited. It so happened that the Abbot Yin Le was just strolling around outside and had a small crowd of ecstatic people around him, bowing to him repeatedly with prayer hands (15:42). Snow led me over to him and in a matter of words, asked him if I could take a picture with me. He accepted and I got to take a picture with him, who’s a celebrity there in Luoyang. After the picture taking and Snow’s excitement had died down, she kicked herself for not talking a photo with the Abbot herself. I told her that with a little photoshop, I could make an excellent but particularly unconvincing photo with her and the Abbot together. We next travelled through the temple to see the different halls and visit some of the other temples that were made in dedication to the link between Chinese Buddhism and the Buddhism of other countries across Asia. These temples include a Buddhist temple from Thailand (16:43), Cambodia (17:45), and India (19:00). The architecture and artwork inside each temple is simply astounding. Afterwards we headed in town to eat lunch at a noodle shop.
Luoyang was a great place to experience Chinese ancient history, traditional Chinese & Buddhist culture, and a great place to visit “off the beaten path.” Again, most Westerners have heard of Shanghai & Beijing but few have heard about Luoyang, a city just as big…and growing! For the music, it was a blend of traditional Chinese and modern Asian-inspired electronic music.
On the next video, it will feature my trip to Beijing including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and other places. The link to get there is:

Nous avons découvert le brunch de Luoyang : soupe de boeuf ! D'autres activités nous ont bien plu : une visite au musée, une promenade au parc, encore la courses dans un grand supermarché et faire à manger des plats français à nos hôtes !

Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang (UNESCO Heritage Site)
This is our vlog for Longmen Grottoes. We took a cab from Luoyang and arrived as early as possible. We visited this site in the summer and it was going to be a VERY hot day with little shade. I recommend visiting early in the day or in the fall/spring and bringing a hat and sunscreen. There is also a really good restaurant near the ticket booth. The site is located on both sides of a river with two bridges in-between. The caves are so numerous it would be challenging to see them all in one day. The largest and most impressive statues are found high up the steps toward the end. There is also a beautiful garden with a tea house on the other side. Hope you Enjoy and please subscribe!
