The Longmen Grottoes
Glimpses of China: The Longmen Grottoes is my documentary on the world famous Buddhist caves on the cliff of Mount Longmen near the ancient Capital City of Luoyang in the Henan province of China. Dating back to 5th Century AD, the Longmen Caves are one of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art and a living testimony to the deep historical, cultural and civilizational linkages between India and China.

The Longmen Grottoes in China (Luoyang 6)
The Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang Province in central China is one of three main Buddhist cave complexes in the country; the other two being the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province, and the Mogao Grottoes near Dunhuang in Gansu Province.
Of the three though it is the Longmen Grottoes which are regarded as containing the peak of Chinese Buddhist art. The complex itself is huge, almost 12km from end to end, carved out of the limestone cliffs over a period of more than 400 years.
Unfortunately the rise of the European art market in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, saw mass looting at the site for artifacts that could be sold to foreign collectors and museums, and most of these have never been returned.
Meanwhile nearly 100 of the grottoes suffered serious damage, hundreds of Buddha and Bodhisattva statues were stolen, and more than a thousand were destroyed.
What remains, however, which is substantial, points to the amazing achievements of Buddhist art in the medieval period, when Buddhism itself was at the height of its influence in China.
This documentary from China Central Television gives within its short compass a tour of the caves and their history, and the efforts now being made to restore and catalogue the remaining artworks.
The film is narrated in Mandarin, but has English subtitles, which are adequate for gaining a better understanding of this World Heritage Site, which is probably the most accessible of the cave sites in China.
Longmen Grottoes: A symbol of ancient cultural exchange in Asia
When Siddhartha Gautama ventured out of India centuries ago, each modern-day Asian country interpreted his Buddhist teachings differently. China was no exception. And to this day, the Longmen Grottoes in central China's Henan Province, feature tens of thousands of Buddha statues sculpted in caves.

Longmen Grottoes (UNESCO/NHK)
The grottoes and niches of Longmen contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). These works, entirely devoted to the Buddhist religion, represent the high point of Chinese stone carving.

The Longmen Grottoes remain one of the most sacred places in China. Which is why they were a perfect place for Wu Zetian, the country's first female ruler, to make a statement about her power.

Luoyang - Longmen Grottoes - Trip to China part 28 - Full HD Travel video
The Longmen Grottoes or Longmen Caves are one of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Buddha and his disciples, they are located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) south of present day Luòyáng in Hénán province, Peoples Republic of China. The images, many once painted, were carved into caves excavated from the limestone cliffs of the Xiangshan and Longmenshan mountains, running east and west.
There are as many as 100,000 statues within the 1,400 caves, ranging from an 1 inch (25 mm) to 57 feet (17 m) in height. The area also contains nearly 2,500 stelae and inscriptions, whence the name Forest of Ancient Stelae, as well as over sixty Buddhist pagodas.
In 2000 the site was inscribed upon the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity, for its perfection of an art form, and for its encapsulation of the cultural sophistication of Tang China.

Longmen Grottoes--Luoyang, CHINA
A musical montage of the amazing Long Men Shi Ku-Buddhist carvings in China's central Henan Province...
Longmen Grottoes Luoyang Longmen UNESCO World Heritage Site in China 龙门石窟 Buddha Rock Carvings
We were in Xi'An, China! This morning, we took a high speed rail from Xi'An North to Luoyang Longmen ( followed by a short taxi ride to the Longmen Grottos. This video starts with the most impressive rock carving, to show you what people come here to see. A good number of steps to climb.
Verdict of this place? Well, if you have the time, you could come take a look. However, the main problem is that the carvings have been destroyed, mutilated, taken apart (there were many empty caves) over the years. Apparently, the damage was exacerbated during the Cultural Revolution. It would have been much more splendid if the carvings were better preserved. Still, glad that we made the journey to take a look at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Wikipedia:
The Longmen Grottoes (simplified Chinese: 龙门石窟; traditional Chinese: 龍門石窟; pinyin: Lóngmén Shíkū; literally: 'Dragon's Gate Grottoes') or Longmen Caves are some of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Buddha and his disciples, they are located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) south of present-day Luoyang in Henan province, China. The images, many once painted, were carved as outside rock reliefs and inside artificial caves excavated from the limestone cliffs of the Xiangshan (香山) and Longmenshan, running east and west. The Yi River (Chinese: 伊河) flows northward between them and the area used to be called Yique (伊阙; 'The Gate of the Yi River').[1][2][3] The alternative name of Dragon's Gate Grottoes derives from the resemblance of the two hills that check the flow of the Yi River to the typical Chinese gate towers that once marked the entrance to Luoyang from the south.[4] There are as many as 100,000 statues within the 2,345 caves, ranging from 1 inch (25 mm) to 57 feet (17 m) in height. The area also contains nearly 2,500 stelae and inscriptions, hence the name “Forest of Ancient Stelae, as well as over sixty Buddhist pagodas. Situated in a scenic natural environment, the caves were dug from a 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) stretch of cliff running along both banks of the river. 30% date from the Northern Wei and 60% from the Tang dynasty, caves from other periods accounting for less than 10% of the total.[3] Starting with the Northern Wei Dynasty in 493 AD, patrons and donors included emperors, Wu Zetian, members of the royal family, other rich families, generals, and religious groups.[1][5]
In 2000 the site was inscribed upon the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity,” for its perfection of an art form, and for its encapsulation of the cultural sophistication of Tang China.[2]

Fengxian Temple, Longmen Grottoes, Luoyang, China
Fengxian Temple, Longmen Grottoes, Luoyang, China. We arrived early enough in Luoyang after the overnight train from Shanghai to be at Longmen Grottoes when they opened. Instead of looking closely at the caves near the entrance, we hurried ahead to try to beat the crowd to Fengxian Grotto, with its massive meditating Vairocana Buddha and attendants. This paid off, and the resulting minutes of solitude were a peak experience that I will never forget.
