Hill Tribes Northern Thailand Karen Long Neck Village Chiang Rai
A very exciting morning was spent visiting an area of Northern Thailand where the villages of 5 Hill Tribes have been established, essentially as a tourist attraction.
The Tribes people have been provided with free housing, rice, education for their children and a means to generate income for their families and in return, profit is being generated for the landowners from the tourist dollar.
In all honesty, only 1 or perhaps 2 of the Tribes hold any real intrigue for visitors to the Villages. The Long Neck people and the Big Ear people have modified their bodies so substantially, that it’s certainly worth the 300 baht entrance fee to go and have a look. Walk around to visit the other Tribes to see their costumes, but if you don’t expect too much you won’t leave disappointed.
If you are visiting Chiang Rai, I highly recommend that you take the time to experience the Hill Tribes of Northern Thailand.
We hope that you enjoyed watching this video.

Karen Long Neck Villages in Chiang Rai Thailand:
Location: Many locations between Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle 300-500 Baht a person entrée fee
Visiting a one of the numerous Karen Long Neck villages in Thailand is one of the most unusual experiences you will have better seen in person than in a book or something like Discovery Chanel
The Karen villagers that lived in the hills on the Myanmar side of the Thai border. Overall, the Long Neck Tribes live a rugged and simple lifestyle, but thousands have had to flee Burma over the decades due to political unrest.
Fleeing to Thailand was safe choice and in some cases the only choice, but the illegal immigrants do not have options for gaining Thai citizenship. The lack of opportunity for the Karen people and being separated from most of modern Thailand. It is a struggle to balance the new world with the old.
The Karen Long Necks It may seem that the Karen women have unusually long necks; the brass rings force their shoulders down just making their necks seem longer.
A Human Zoo? Visiting the Karen Long Necks is a surprisingly a very pleasant experience. As soon as you put down your camera and start, talking to the women it is amazing how quickly they become very friendly to you, because most tourists just take some selfies and photos and leave. It will only feel like a human zoo if you make it feel like that.

MUST DO IN CHIANG MAI - Authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe
A must do in Chiang Mai is this 100% authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour. Unlike other things to do in Chiang Mai, this is well off the tourist radar. Watch us explore native Thai villages, cook, and eat exotic Thai food with the locals of Northern Thailand.
Many tour companies in Chiang Mai offer a “hill tribe tour”, only to take you to a contrived Thai village that only exists to serve tourists. What Thailand Hilltribe Holidays does, is offer you a 100% authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour without any other tourists with you. We were taken to two villages: the Karen Hill Tribe and Hmong Hill Tribe.
* Book this tour with Thailand Hilltribe Holidays:
First was the Karen Hill Tribe in Northern Thailand where we were able to meet a village family and cook with them. Being able to cook with a hill tribe family was one of the most unique experiences in Thailand we have had in all 4 months here! The main dishes were sticky rice cooked inside of bamboo and a mix of curries, however we were able to try some exotic Thai food when they served frog soup! Watch and see how Ryan got tricked into eating this… haha!
The next stop on our Hill Tribe Village tour was the Hmong Hill Tribe village, also located in Northern Thailand inside of Doi Suthep National Park. The Hmong village was more advanced than the Karen, and quite resembled a traditional Thai village you might have seen a decade ago. Since so many people travel Thailand each year, it’s becoming more difficult to find the “local Thailand” visitors crave to see. We can guarantee you by taking this tour, you will have a one of a kind, unforgettable experience.
* Want to learn more about this authentic Thailand Hill Tribe tour? Read our blog here:
If you’re wondering what to do in Chiang Mai but don’t want to hit up the popular tourist spots, then this authentic Northern Thailand Hill Tribe tour is for you. It took us a lot of research to find this experience, since it’s not on any of the Chiang Mai to do lists you find online. We hope by watching this video you were able to get an inside look into life for a local Thailand hill tribe and are inspired to take a hill tribe tour yourself!
If you have any questions about this must do in Chiang Mai, how to travel Thailand, or the best things to do in Chiang Mai, feel free to leave a comment down below. We also have a huge list of Thailand travel vlogs you can watch to help plan your trip to Northern Thailand, Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, or Chiang Mai.
* We’re Ryan & Stacia from DeathbyVlog. Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month with a moderate housing budget. Sorry, but no backpacker lifestyle here! Our channel will show you what it’s like to live abroad while exploring top tourist destinations and hidden gems. We will show you mouthwatering local food tours, provide history on each destination, and cinematic broll for all of you film lovers. Each month we rent an apartment or airbnb in a different city or country, so follow along on this journey and learn about countries around the world. We hope you enjoy our travel vlog, don’t forget to subscribe!

Thailand's famous long neck tribe people don't actually have long necks at all
Thailand's famous long neck tribe are called the Padaung, but despite their name, they don't actually have long necks. The rings create an illusion. Circa's travel journalist, Nathalie Basha (@TheTravelMuse) spends a day with the well-known hill tribe in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Thailand- Chaing Rai Day Trip: Longneck” Karen Hill Tribe Village.
IMMERSE IN THE CULTURE: One of our stops on our Chiang Rai day trip was to visit the “Longneck” Karen Hill Tribe Village.
Karen women are known for their tremendous weaving skills which is done on a backstrap loom. You can witness them practicing the craft to make items for sale. This is a bit of a tourist attraction and the purpose it to learn about their culture and support by purchasing their items. This was a controversial visit as some felt it was more of a circus show. Either way, I wanted to see for myself and immerse in their culture. The traditional purpose of the rings was to achieve the ideal beauty, an elongated neck, like a swan. Though the coils actually don’t make the neck longer, it compresses the shoulder blades, pushing them down which gives the appearance of an elongated neck.
All the ladies were most gracious about posing for photos/videos and even helping to put a faux set of rings around my neck. And in return, I supported their stores by purchasing their goods.

Thailand Adventures - Long Neck Karen Village
We spent the day travelling to the white temple and the long neck Karen tribe in Chiang Rai.
Visit to a 'Long-Neck Village' in northern Thailand.
Near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, is a small village which is home to a group of people who call themselves Kayan Lahwi (though tour guides call them the Padaung.) They moved here after fleeing persecution in neighboring Myanmar/Burma. Denied formal refugee status and therefore the right to work in Thailand, they are allowed to remain here as a tourist attraction. Visits to the village are part of the standard tour packages offered to visitors to Chiang Mai, and many tourists choose to pay a visit to the 'Long Neck village,' and to have their photographs taken with the the exotic 'giraffe women' who live here. Tour guides don't mention the male members of the community, who weren't in evidence when I visited but presumably must be around here somewhere. Is this really cultural education or is it a human zoo?
For an interesting description and analysis, please see Jessica Theurer's 'Trapped in Their Own Rings: Padaung Women and Their Fight for Traditional Freedom' (2004.)
