Chinese Longquan Celadon | Chinese documentary with only Chinese subtitles
Longquan is an ancient cultural city famous for making celadon in southwest Zhejiang Province, East China. Abundant in porcelain clay and pinewood, used for baking porcelain, over 360 sites are densely distributed throughout Longquan. All these sites historically belong to the ancient Longquan Kiln, which has the longest manufacturing history, widest site distribution, highest quality, largest celadon production and export scales in China's porcelain history.
There are roughly eight steps involved in making Longquan celadon, namely, throwing, trimming, biscuiting, printing, mixing glaze, glaze application, encastage, and burning.
The making of celadon is not only a skill but also an art. Superior celadon is reputed to be as beautiful as jade. Famous worldwide, Longquan celadon was not only used for every dynasty's royal courts in ancient China, but has been exported to many other countries and regions of Asia, Africa and Europe since the early Song Dynasty. Modern Longquan celadon still inherite features of the traditional Longquan Kiln and many celadon products made by local masters and craftsmen have won top honors and prizes in various pottery-making competitions.
The Longquan Celadon made by “Dun Tang” is one of the kilns, which is well-knowned for its generations of famous celadon craftsmen of wonderful workmanship.

Chinese celadon from Longquan and nearby cities in Zhejiang province
Southern Song (1127–1279) and Yuan dynasty (1271–1368)
In Northern Song dynasty (960-1127), Longquan kilns also produced celadon, but a relatively little amount was exported out of China. Until Southern Song to early Yuan period in 12th-13th century, the production reaches the peak for both quality and quantity and enormous amounts of celadons were exported to Southeast Asia as evidences in abundant celadons found in the shipwrecks (Nanhai No. 1, Jepara, Kudat, Yuan Binh Chau) archeological sites and antique markets in the region.
Early Song celadon potters appreciate simplicity as beauty; hence some fine wares have only beautiful shape and glaze without other decoration. Until later Song to Yuan period, more celadons got additional decorative motifs by incised, impressed or molding technique.
Celadon glaze was produced to resemble jade. The more Jade-like glaze and color is desirable.
Collectors should beware of good reproductions, which have been produced sine early 20th century in China and Japan, and also in many countries at present time. We need to look at body, base, foot and think how did the potter form the shape and do the glazing, how was the object placed into a kiln, and imperfections/ ununiformities that commonly found in old pots. Laerning from genuien pieces or shards is best.
It is noted that not only Longquan kilns produced these celadon, many other kilns (more than 100) in Southern Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong provinces also produced similar celadons. Therefore it is difficult sometimes to pinpoint the exact kiln origin. Still, many people generally assumed that fine pieces were produced from Longquan kilns.
In the video, the green dish and small bowl are dated Southern Song dynasty. While, the lighter green/blue dish, jarlets, jar, and tea pot are dated Yuan dynasty.

釉層厚度比胎更厚是龍泉官窯的特徵。但其整体厚度都少於 1mm.
Thickness of glaze thicker than is the specialty of Southern Song Dynasty Longquan Guan Kiln. Nevertheless the overall thickness is just only less than 1mm.
冰裂紋釉面暗啞但銀寶光細碎耀眼,底足修胎不規整,古瓷特質。不用多說,看圖已知真假。歡迎指正交流、回覆或電郵hooo8oooh@gmail.com分享收藏鑑賞心得。

The bubbles are all large in size. The tyre is in yellow color. The patten is elegant. It shows the lived office of Song Dynasty. We may see the tinny but strong silver light reflection . I used it and successfully communicate with the ancient people in the dream. Believe it not not just up to you. However, I did. No need to say more, Just take a look.
氣泡大而疏,黃土胎,花功優美,宋官人物造像生動活靈活現。古瓷銀寶光細碎強烈但不刺眼。咱曾試用過,居然發夢與古人相通!信不信由你。反正我信了!不用多說...看.....

The traditional firing technology of Longquan celadon
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009
URL:
Description: The city of Longquan in the coastal Chinese province of Zhejian is known for its celadon pottery and the traditional firing technology that imparts its distinctive glaze. Compounded from violet-golden clay and a mixture of burnt feldspar, limestone, quartz and plant ash, the glaze is prepared from recipes that have often been handed down for generations by teachers or within families. The glaze is applied to a fired stoneware vessel, which is then fired again in a repeated cycle of six stages of heating and cooling where precise temperatures matter a great deal: either over- or under-firing will spoil the effect. Experienced celadon artists carefully control each stage with a thermometer and by observing the colour of the flame, which reaches temperatures as high as 1310º C. The final product may take either of two styles: elder brother celadon has a black finish with a crackle effect, while the younger brother variety has a thick, lavender-grey and plum-green finish. With its underlying jade-like green colour, celadon fired by the family-oriented businesses of Longquan is prized as masterwork-quality art that can also serve as household ware. It is a proud symbol of the cultural heritage of the craftspeople, their city and the nation.
