plaza de la reina english version
palmavirtual tour.com
We begin our tour of the Plaza de la Reina square. Its name, which means Square of the Queen is due to a monument to Queen Elizabeth II that used to be situated in the center of the square, where the fountain is today. This monument was demolished and destroyed by the people in the 1868 revolution. Before going into the square, our eye may be caught by a building situated on the corner of the Constitución Street, that dates from 1928 and reminds us of English neoclassicism. Created by architect Bennàsser, this place became famous during the Spanish Civil War as the Café Formentor, very popular among the pilots of the Italian Fascist CTV and the German Condor Legion.
Once in the Plaza de la Reina, two buildings stand out: the Casa LLadó, of authentic Elizabethan or French-style architecture, which was home to the Alba Real del Tajo family, and the equally eclectic Casa Sitjar.
After passing the square we see the Joan March Ordines Palace, built in 1940 by Luis Gutiérrez del Soto. This exceptional building with a slight Majorcan tradition is inspired on the Italian Baroque. In addition to the large house, it is worth pointing out the library, which is open to the public and offers ancient cartography, local history documents and Majorcan bibliographies of all kinds.

Places to see in ( Mallorca - Spain ) Llotja
With twin turrets and an angel over the door, this 15th-century seafront building of Llotja looks half-castle, half-church. In fact it is neither. It was designed by Guillem Sagrera (the architect of the cathedral's Portal del Mirador) as the city's exchange when Mallorca was a major maritime trading centre in the 15th century.
As trade declined through the centuries, Palma ceased to have so much commercial importance and the building changed its use according to need. It was used as a store for goods and guns during the War of Independence and became a gallery for fine art at the end of the 19th century.
The rectangular hall has an octagonal tower at each corner, with ten smaller towers to act as buttresses. Stand among the spiralling pillars, gaze up at the rib vaulting, and try to imagine the Mallorcan merchants of 500 years ago haggling over silk, spices and silver.
Nowadays La Llotja is a cultural centre, hosting temporary exhibitions.
