A Look Around Loulé Portugal in The Algarve
Take a look around Loulé in Portugal on The Algarve a traditional Portuguese market town, and a popular destination for a day trip. Visitors are drawn to Loule, for its characterful historic centre, the lively market and genuine Portuguese atmosphere.
The focal point of Loule is the Arabic inspired covered market, with stalls selling regional handicrafts, local produce and freshly caught fish. Surrounding the market are busy shopping streets, tree-lined plazas and a warren of alleys, which have barely altered since the medieval period. Within this delightful historic centre, is an ancient castle, the Gothic Igreja Matriz church and remnants of Loule’s solid defences.
Loule is a peaceful and unhurried town, but it comes alive on Saturday mornings, when two additional markets are held in the town. The farmer’s market specialises in local produce, while gypsy market is a chaotic and lively affair.
Loule is one of the few destinations in the Algarve whose primary focus is not tourism; it is a town full of ordinary Portuguese going about their daily lives. It is a likeable town, which offers fascinating tourist attractions, a traditional Portuguese market and a delightful historic centre.
If you are based in one of the larger resort towns (Albufeira, Vilamoura or Quarteira), Loule is the ideal destination for a day trip, and to experience authentic Portugal. There are sufficient attractions to fill a half day of sightseeing, and the town can be easily travelled to using public transport.
The best advice is to visit Loule on Saturday mornings, when both the gypsy and farmers markets are held. Loule should be avoided on Sundays and Mondays. On Sundays, the covered market is closed, while on Mondays, most museums and government managed tourist attractions are closed for the day.
Between the castle and the Igreja Matriz are a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alley and backstreets which follow the medieval layout of the town. These streets are filled with small workshops and artisan studios, where old craftsmen ply traditional family trades, including copper working, pottery, tile painting and furniture making. Above the small workshops are the family houses, which have been owned by the same families for generations. This section of Loule is best to explore by simply getting lost in it and wandering through the series of charming alleyways.
Loule is not a conventional holiday destination, and most visitors are day trippers. For a holiday, Loule is more suited for the intrepid and cultural curious visitor, who wishes to escape from the common tourist haunts. Loule has a distinctly Portuguese ambience, with all services and facilities designed for the Portuguese residents of the town.
Within the Loule region there is a wide selection of rental villas and self-catering apartments, and these tend to be much better value than the coastal towns. Loule is also growing in popularity with people emigrating to Portugal, and there is a significant expat community.
Loule is 10km from the nearest beaches, therefore the town should not be considered for a beach holiday.

Painting Traditional Azulejos Tiles in Portugal
I travelled to the Algarve region in Portugal and participated in a traditional tile painting workshop I found on Airbnb Experiences. It was a wonderful way to immerse myself in the Portuguese culture, support local artisans and learn about this beautiful tradition.
Azulejos tiles can be found all over Portugal and are used in exterior and interior decoration.
Thank you to Maria from Algarve Azulejos Art who ran the workshop for her guidance and interesting stories.

My Last Month
❤ ~~~OPEN FOR THE GOODS
Hey guys, this is a little project I have been working on for over a month now. I challenged myself to film every day for the last month that I was in Portugal so that I could remember where my path took me during this very special month. Being in Portugal was a dream, and now I am currently in my bed back in America and I can't help but smile every time I think about how lucky I am that I was able to experience something so great. Thank you to those who have come on my journey so far with me. It doesn't end here, I plan on continuing my travels all around America now.
I love you all and I hope you liked this video, it's a special one to me.
P.S. I still have maybe 4 or 5 more vlogs of my time in Portugal, so look forward to those :)

Goodbye Algarve. Hello, Lisbon | Week Two
Join us on our 2-year adventure across Europe and Asia with weekly video uploads! This is our second video so the quality may not be pristine yet, but we are getting there!
Our second stop is in Lisbon, Portugal. We are both really excited for this stop as it's our first major city! Lots of sights to see in only 1 week. This is the first time we are staying in a private room, living with one of the locals.

Day 8 - Sand Sculpture Festival
We woke up to a really heavy downpour of rain! Have we teleported back to England?! We decided to have a relaxing morning, so we put on a movie. Around 2pm, the rain stopped and rays cracked through the black clouds, so we decided to go to the sand sculpture festival with the remaining daylight. It only took us around 20 minutes to drive to this place, so it wasn't too bad! When we got there we could see the sculptures towering over the venues parameter, so we was super excited to get in! We rushed to the ticket office to be informed by a woman that some of the sculptures had been ruined because of the rainfall over the previous 2 weeks. This didn't phase us, we paid the €10 each entrance fee, to find the woman was exaggerating! The sculptures were for the most part intact. Some of the sculptures were really well done, the best we had ever seen!
======
Day 9 - Teaching and Body Boarding at Praia da Rocha
We walked to a surfing shop and rented a body board and wetsuit each for €15 each. Then we headed out for some body boarding! I had done this before, so I was good, but Claire was a newbie, so she was not so good! That paired with her being cold all the time, she was actually having a great time! She gave it a go and I was impressed with her!
======
Day 10 - Benagil Caves
We walked through a really beautiful bit of grassland and headed to the coast. We decided the first thing to do would be to hike up the coast, to see all the famous caves and sites that the area is famous for. This turned out to be one of the best hikes ever! Beautiful cliffs, ravines and wildlife everywhere. We also saw the Benagil cave from above, which looked breathtaking! Then we headed to the Benagil beach to rent a Kayak or swim to the cave! I had read online that most people swim to the cave, so I was really excited to give that a go! DISASTER. We got to the beach to see no kayaks or boats allowed to go out on the sea that day because of how choppy it was. Both of us were very sad. I wanted to just swim anyway, but Claire didn't want me to because of how big the waves were. Thinking back, she was right, I probably would have been washed up on some rocks.

Day 11 - Goodbye Algarve, Hello Lisbon!
After cleaning and packing, we unwillingly left our past home and started on our drive to Faro. We dropped off the car and got an Uber to Faro train station. Around 3 hours remained before our train departed, so a trip to the famous Faro bone chapel was on the cards. After seeing a very strange chapel, it was time to head back to the train station and get on our train to Lisbon. Claire slept the whole journey! While I just did work and listened to music. It was a rather pleasant journey to be honest, it took around 3 and a half hours to reach Lisbon. We arrived at Sete Rios station and got an Uber to our new Airbnb. People drive like MANIACS in Lisbon, our Uber driver thought he was in a rally stage. We reached our AirBnB and was a tad sceptical about staying in the private room of a local, but our host was a very nice man who made us feel right at home. He had a very modern and beautiful apartment with a fantastic view over Lisbon.
======
Day 12 - First day in Lisbon
Our first day in Lisbon! We both woke up with high hopes of walking around all day taking in the culture and sightseeing! Rain, rain, rain. So much rain. It's fine, we have waterproofs! Well, one of us has. I seem to have forgotten all the waterproofs I had purchased before we started travelling. Luckily, our host had a spare umbrella we could use! Yeyyy, back on track. We decided to head to a museum while the rain was torrential. We chose the Oriente Museum as it was rather close and seemed quite cool. Thinking back, I don't really like Modern Art, I don't really understand it, so this doesn't seem the best idea looking back. There was loads of historical stuff there too, which was cool!
======
Day 13 - Teaching and St Jorge Castle
After teaching, we looked out the window and we saw sun!! Quick, lets get out and see as much as possible! First item on the agenda, the famous Comercio Plaza, a massive square with a massive arch, really close to the coast. We headed through the arch and into Lisboa old town. This was a beautiful walk! Eventually, we ended up at St Jorge castle, a must-see on my list. The views from this point were amazing! Seeing over the whole of Lisbon was amazing.
