Sendai Loople Bus Tour | Japan 2016 | Episode 13 Pt 1
We woke up to find the rain we expected, but that didn't dampen our excitement to get out and explore Sendai. Luckily, the rain cleared by the time we finished breakfast and started to head out for the day.
Sendai has an amazing setup for tourists, getting around to all the major sights is a breeze thanks to what they call the Loople Bus, a sightseeing bus which follows the same loop all day. The bus terminal where you can purchase the Loople Bus pass is located below the pedestrian deck out front of Sendai Station, a Google map link is below.
We started our tour at Kyogamine Hill where to found the Zuiho-ji Temple and the primary reason we came to this spot, Zuihōden Mausoleum where rests the remains of Date Masamune, the first feudal lord of Japan. We were taken aback how peaceful it was wandering around the sights as it was only a 10 minute bus ride from the centre of Sendai.
Next up was a visit to the Sendai City Museum where you’ll get a peak into the early years at Sendai, and gain a better appreciation for Date Masamune. There are lots of old maps on display showing the progress of Sendai over the centuries. There is also a few spectacular samurai armours on display including the famous one of Date Masamune, crescent moon helmet and all.
By the end of part 1 we were making our way up the hill to the city of the Sendai Castle. Stay tuned to part 2 for fantastic views of Sendai and another peaceful temple in the middle of the city.

Sendai 仙台 - Tohoku - Letters from Japan
Sendai is located near the coast in northern Japan in the Tohoku region. With just over a million people, it has everything a typical city has to offer— professional sports teams, modern trains and subways, and countless options for shopping, dining, and night time entertainment.

Sendai Loople Bus Tour | Japan 2016 | Episode 13 Pt 2
Part 2 of our Loople Bus Tour finds me where part 1 left off, trying to avoid a heart attack walking up a rather steep climb from the Sendai City Museum to the grounds of Sendai Castle.
Spoiler alert: I made it without incident! ????
Unfortunately the castle and it’s building no longer exist, not surviving the Meji Restoration, bombings of WWII and occupation by the US after the war. But it’s still worth a visit, if only for the impressive view back down over Sendai. There is a castle museum and a rebuilt tower which we did not even have time to visit. We did get to see the foundations of the old great hall, the famous statue of Date Masamune and the brilliantly coloured Miyagiken Gokoku Shrine.
From there we took the Loople Bus to Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, a shrine with 400 plus years of history. It was one of the important places of Sendai for the Date Clan, and it’s long history can be felt as you stroll along the path from the bus stop to the shrine. It’s a peaceful spot surrounded by the bustling city of Sendai.
After a bit of a stressful wait for the last Loople Bus of the day, we headed back to the hotel for a quick pitstop before capping off this amazing day with a boatload of conveyor belt sushi. The place we found had an impressively broad menu, and had some interesting items to try. I ventured out of my comfort zone and tried the beef tongue sushi. Beef tongue is a specialty of Sendai, so I figured I better get accustomed before having a full meal of grilled tongue.
Full and content we headed back to the hotel to get some sleep, we had another full day planned for tomorrow.

Trip to Sendai - Day 1 | Loople Bus City Tour + Date Busyoutai (伊達武将隊) Tanabata Performance
No matter how many times I visited this city, it won’t ever be enough. It’s one of my favorite city in the world! (I’m not exaggerating at all). The city is so beautiful with distinct four-season sceneries. Also, if you’re by any chance following my blog posts, I’ve described my personal reason on why I really love this city haha ٩(^ᴗ^)۶
[Sendai Trip - Day 1]
I bought Loople Bus Ticket and tour around the city the whole day. Since it was on Tanabata Festival, they put on beautiful decorations in the tourist spots and also in the streets, it was so beautiful!
My itinerary was:
- Zuihoden Mausoleum (瑞鳳殿)
- Goshikinuma Pond (五色沼)
- Sendai International Center (仙台国際センター) + lunch at café mozart Metro
- Aoba (Sendai) Castle (青葉城)
- Osaki Hachimangu Shrine (大崎八幡宮)
Also, I met Date Busyoutai members! They were all so interesting and kind! Their special performance for tanabata is really cool too. The best part was, I met Date Masamune! Since he is my all time favorite warlord, I was so moved. This summer holiday is really unforgettable ♪

As the year is coming to an end, Charly and Victor decided to head on up to Tohoku to meet up with our good friend Chris from the Abroad in Japan channel. First, we hit up a unique spot for lunch called Cafe Pamplemousse to try out some pancakes, a sandwich, and enjoy the quacky atmosphere with other guests.
After lunch, we headed on out to Gyutan Yaki Senmonten Tsukasa to try some of Sendai's renowned beef tongue. Made with Australian Beef, coals from Iwate prefecture, and high-grade rice from Miyagi prefecture itself, this beef tongue dish is definitely a treat!
Wrapping up the night, we enjoyed a few drinks before resting at the 9 Hours capsule hotel in Sendai, then headed out to Matsushima. Matsushima is one of the 3 most Scenic places in Japan, also known as the Nihon Sankei along with Miyajima and Ama no Hashidate. This brings back a lot of memories from Victor's first trip to Japan almost 10 years ago.

We start, as many do, in front of Sendai (train) Station. We then hop onto the Sendai City Loop Bus (Loople Sendai) and ride the bus out of the heart of city, up to the location of Aoba Castle. Where there are terrific views over the city skyline below.
We head back into the city centre to see some folks taking photos with a group of samurai warrior cosplayers. Finally, we take a walk down Asaichi Market street and check out the rich selection of foods they have for sale.
