Lord Howe Island Adventure Challenge
Lord Howe Island is a gem of the natural world. Its dramatic scenery, lush subtropical forests, rare flora and fauna, pristine beaches and colourful marine life are breathtaking and unique. Sir David Attenborough once wrote that Lord Howe is “so extraordinary it is almost unbelievable… Few islands, surely, can be so accessible, so remarkable, yet so unspoilt.”
Lord Howe is genuine wilderness. Unlike most parts of the world, the island was first settled in the 1840’s and has had minimal human impact. Many parts of the island are rarely visited or remain unvisited. The vast populations of land and sea birds have no predators, and with a loud yell or hand clap, will hover above your head to investigate the sound. Some will land at your feet and appear hypnotised. It’s a unique experience.
Offshore, Lord Howe Island is surrounded by the southernmost coral reef in the world, and has a unique combination of tropical, subtropical and temperate marine life. There are over 90 coral and 500 fish species.
In recognition of its scenic beauty and biodiversity, Lord Howe was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1982. The list includes Uluru, Kakadu, Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef. More recently, National Geographic named Lord Howe as one of its 'Places of a Lifetime'.
Access to the best parts of Lord Howe Island requires a local guide, a boat, and a bit of determination. Only then can you discover Lord Howe’s true backcountry wilderness. The Adventure Challenge Week combines the experience of local park rangers and scientists to guide you to some of the island's most amazing places, including the summit of Mt Gower and beyond. After a hard and memorable day, you’ll return to Pinetrees for a hot shower, cold beer, exceptional 4 course dinner, great wine and comfortable bed. You may find the perfect balance between physical exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction and, well, some of life’s more enjoyable treats. And there’s no mobile phone coverage on Lord Howe!
The Adventure Challenge Week is for serious backcountry adventurers who thrive on ‘exposure’, ‘missions’ and ‘epics’ (you’ll know who you are). You must have a strong level of fitness and be prepared to walk off-track in steep backcountry terrain. We'll be led by former park ranger and mountain guide, Dean Hiscox, from Lord Howe Environmental Tours, and supported by former United Nations ecologist, Luke Hanson, from Pinetrees Lodge. We've had great reviews in the media, including a feature article in Great Walks Magazine and a feature article in the Sydney Morning Herald (by Louise Southerden, the 2013 Australian Travel Writer of the Year).
The Adventure Challenge Week runs from 12-16 October 2015. Group size is limited to 10 people with a guest to guide ratio of 5:1. You must have a high level of fitness, and as a guide, be able to swim 400m in 12 minutes and walk 10km in 3 hours. Pinetrees reserves the right to decline your participation if your fitness level is below the group standard. Package rates start from $1890 per person (twin share). Please contact us for further details or to make a booking. More details at pinetrees.com.au

Lord Howe Island, New South Wales
A tiny treasure rising out of the emptiness of the southern Pacific Ocean and part of the Australian state of New South Wales, Lord Howe Island is one of the world's last truly unspoiled Island destinations. Just 11 km long and 2 km wide, two thirds of its land mass is covered by Banyan, Pandanus and native Kentia Palm forests, its many perfect beaches are safe, pristine and tranquil.
Guided and self-guided bush treks, fish feeding at Ned's Beach, bicycling, bird watching tours, cruising around the Island, kayaking, reef walking, snorkelling and scuba diving, or just laying around in a world class world heritage environment, are some of the favourite things to do.
The crystal waters that abound in marine life comprises over 400 species of fish, 90 species of coral, 4% of which is unique to the Island. Perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving, and fishing.
There are 18 Accommodation properties - from budget to 5 stars. Cafes and restaurants for those who don't want to self-cater and general stores for those who do.

Diving Lord Howe
Diving highlights of Lord Howe Island, NSW. This footage was shot over 8 months diving the island, including Balls Pyramid. Pristine water, abundant and isolated marine life, and some of the most incredible diving you will find anywhere in Australia, it really doesn't get any better.

Swimming With Dolphins off Lord Howe Island
After an amazing morning diving Balls Pyramid off Lord Howe Island we were on the way back when we spotted several dolphins jumping in and out of the water alongside the boat. We stopped and jumped in and were able to swim with this pod/family of 4, including a baby dolphin, for several minutes in the middle of the deep blue. Absolutely amazing. Sorry the vid is so shaky, I was too excited to hold steady. Also, shot in 4K so please select HD for viewing.

Seven Peaks Walk
Lord Howe Island is one of the best walking destinations in Australia. Its World Heritage listing is for scenic beauty, biodiversity and rare flora and fauna, and there's a large variety of terrain in a small area. You can explore the intertidal zone at low tide and discover amazing life forms, you can climb small hills and capture vistas that feature in David Attenborough documentaries, and you can climb big mountains. When your legs need a break, you can swim with reef sharks and turtles over the southernmost coral reef in the Pacific.
The Seven Peaks Walk is Lord Howe's premier 5 day guided adventure that takes you from pristine beaches and exposed coral platforms to the delicate mist forests on Mt Gower. Along the way, you'll see sheltered swimming coves, subtropical palm forests, freshwater creeks, rugged sea cliffs and volcanic peaks. Some sections of the walk, such as the Lower Road on Mt Lidgbird, wind along exposed narrow ledges (protected by ropes, of course) across a 300 vertical metre cliff. If it wasn't for the ocean and seabirds, you could be traversing on a Via Ferrata in the Italian Alps. Other sections of the walk take you deep into Jurassic Park style banyan forests with the only rookeries of Providence petrels in the world. When you yell, the curious birds land at your feet, almost hypnotised. It's an incredible experience.
After a memorable day, you’ll return to Pinetrees for a hot shower, cold beer, exceptional 4 course dinner, great wine and luxurious bed. You may find the perfect balance between physical exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction and, well, some of life’s more enjoyable treats. Did we mention the day spa?
The Seven Peaks Walk is for experienced hikers who enjoy a challenge by day, and some luxury by night. A few sections of the walk are ‘off-track’ and require a steady head for heights. You also need to be fit – as a guide, you should be able to walk 10km in 3 hours and climb 300 stairs in 20 minutes (free tip: use the trip as motivation to train for a few months before you come). All groups are led by former park ranger and mountain guide, Dean Hiscox, from Lord Howe Environmental Tours, and supported by former United Nations ecologist, Luke Hanson, from Pinetrees Lodge. The maximum group size is 12 guests, with a guest to guide ratio of 6:1. If you're looking for something more challenging - perhaps bordering on 'mission' or 'epic' status with guaranteed scratches and sunburn, combined with an immense sense of achievement - then you should consider our Adventure Challenge Week.
We've had great reviews in the media, including a feature article in Great Walks Magazine and a feature article in the Sydney Morning Herald (by Louise Southerden, the 2013 Australian Travel Writer of the Year).
