UNMISSABLE THINGS TO DO ON LORD HOWE ISLAND, AUSTRALIA
If Lord Howe Island isn’t on your bucket list of places to see before you die then add it immediately.
Lord Howe Island is a place that immediately gets under your skin. As I flew into the tiny airport and I saw Mount Gower looming over an island surrounded by gorgeous blue and emerald reefs, I knew this would be a special place.
They call Lord Howe Island the Galapagos of Australia. That’s partly because of its remoteness in the world, but also because of how that isolation has created a place of unrivaled outstanding beauty.
And as if that isn’t enough to hammer home how amazing this place is, Lord Howe Island has just been voted as one of the top regions to travel to for 2020 in Lonely Planet's ‘Best in Travel’ list.
From being in the shadows of places like Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island in Australia, all of a sudden Lord Howe is front of stage in the spotlight. And here’s why.
Take a look at my video showcasing some of the best things to do on Lord Howe Island and you’ll see what I mean!

Trailer - Locals' Guide to Lord Howe Island
The Locals’ Guide to Lord Howe Island is written and photographed by a collective of island locals who love their home and have knowledge to share. To date, 60 of the best locations and activities are described in detail, with more content coming every week.
The contributors to the Locals’ Guide include a lawyer with an MBA (Denis Corcoran), a scientist (Luke Hanson), a professional editor (Geordie Tennant), a hotelier (Dani Rourke) and a multi-lingual marketer whose last job was with the United Nations (Pia Funch). We are blessed with talent and motivation, and the resulting Locals’ Guide is unique in its originality, quality and detail.
We write about places that only locals know about, we provide tips and details that only locals know about, and we tell stories about some quirky locals that only an isolated island in the northern Tasman Sea can produce.
Anyone with an interest in travel writing, photography or videography will enjoy spending a few hours reading the Locals’ Guide, and anyone with an interest in Lord Howe Island, in particular, will enjoy the distraction of some quality content.
Enjoy!
Lord Howe Island Adventure Challenge
Lord Howe Island is a gem of the natural world. Its dramatic scenery, lush subtropical forests, rare flora and fauna, pristine beaches and colourful marine life are breathtaking and unique. Sir David Attenborough once wrote that Lord Howe is “so extraordinary it is almost unbelievable… Few islands, surely, can be so accessible, so remarkable, yet so unspoilt.”
Lord Howe is genuine wilderness. Unlike most parts of the world, the island was first settled in the 1840’s and has had minimal human impact. Many parts of the island are rarely visited or remain unvisited. The vast populations of land and sea birds have no predators, and with a loud yell or hand clap, will hover above your head to investigate the sound. Some will land at your feet and appear hypnotised. It’s a unique experience.
Offshore, Lord Howe Island is surrounded by the southernmost coral reef in the world, and has a unique combination of tropical, subtropical and temperate marine life. There are over 90 coral and 500 fish species.
In recognition of its scenic beauty and biodiversity, Lord Howe was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1982. The list includes Uluru, Kakadu, Fraser Island and the Great Barrier Reef. More recently, National Geographic named Lord Howe as one of its 'Places of a Lifetime'.
Access to the best parts of Lord Howe Island requires a local guide, a boat, and a bit of determination. Only then can you discover Lord Howe’s true backcountry wilderness. The Adventure Challenge Week combines the experience of local park rangers and scientists to guide you to some of the island's most amazing places, including the summit of Mt Gower and beyond. After a hard and memorable day, you’ll return to Pinetrees for a hot shower, cold beer, exceptional 4 course dinner, great wine and comfortable bed. You may find the perfect balance between physical exercise, mental stimulation, social interaction and, well, some of life’s more enjoyable treats. And there’s no mobile phone coverage on Lord Howe!
The Adventure Challenge Week is for serious backcountry adventurers who thrive on ‘exposure’, ‘missions’ and ‘epics’ (you’ll know who you are). You must have a strong level of fitness and be prepared to walk off-track in steep backcountry terrain. We'll be led by former park ranger and mountain guide, Dean Hiscox, from Lord Howe Environmental Tours, and supported by former United Nations ecologist, Luke Hanson, from Pinetrees Lodge. We've had great reviews in the media, including a feature article in Great Walks Magazine and a feature article in the Sydney Morning Herald (by Louise Southerden, the 2013 Australian Travel Writer of the Year).
The Adventure Challenge Week runs from 12-16 October 2015. Group size is limited to 10 people with a guest to guide ratio of 5:1. You must have a high level of fitness, and as a guide, be able to swim 400m in 12 minutes and walk 10km in 3 hours. Pinetrees reserves the right to decline your participation if your fitness level is below the group standard. Package rates start from $1890 per person (twin share). Please contact us for further details or to make a booking. More details at pinetrees.com.au

LORD HOWE ISLAND TRAVEL VLOG | HIKING AND SNORKELLING IN AUSTRALIA'S PARADISE (FULL HD)
Spent four nights and five days on Lord Howe Island, off the NSW coast of Australia packing in as much hiking and snorkelling in as the weather allowed!
Although we didn't get to hike up to Mt. Gower due to timing of the guides, we still managed to hike up to Malabar Hill, Transit Hill and to Goat House Cave, which all had spectacular views from the top.
We snorkelled at Ned's Beach with the fish that hang by the shore, and also went on a snorkel boat tour with Padi who took us to four different spots in the lagoon.

Lord Howe Island & Capella Lodge on Getaway
The most exclusive address on the island, Capella Lodge, has the best views of Mt Gower. It's recently had a $1 million makeover. It is beach-chic with white-washed walls and timber shutters.
The Lidgbird Pavilion now has a second level with wraparound verandahs, plunge pool and bathing area. It's the ultimate retreat. You can dine on your private deck, have canapés delivered at sunset or cruise around on Capella's electric buggy.
The new Makambo loft is a two level-loft suite which has postcard views of Lord Howe's iconic twin peaks. It has fun furnishings from Mambo artist Bruce Gold as well as a plunge spa and extended verandahs.
All up there are nine contemporary suites. They are spacious, light-filled with timber floors and custom furniture pieces. They all have king beds made up with superior cotton linens. Beach towels, robes and backpacks are provided.
The restaurant is for guests only and expect to dine on local fish, regional seafood, farmed meats, homemade pasta, daily baked breads and churned ice cream.
Lord Howe Island 2018
So Kassi and I have been working like crazy trying to save up money so that we can travel Australia, and boy did we splurge. We went to an island that neither of us had heard about; one that only the rich and retired vacation to. It was incredible.
Lord Howe Island is a short (but expensive) two hour flight from Sydney's International Airport. The flight in is probably one of my favorite parts. The views are incredible!
What makes this island unique is the coral reef lagoon that is sheltered by Mt. Gower and the North end of the island that form the shape of a U. It keeps the water warm enough but also flushed with fresh nutrients and colder water from the Tasman Sea. The coral is in pristine condition with no signs of coral bleaching. It is a remarkable sight to see.
The mist forest on the top of Mt. Gower was another one of my favorite parts of the island. It was lush with green overgrowth, wild orchids, and the two rarest palm trees on the planet. The views were unreal.
I can't say enough good things about our trip to Lord Howe Island. It was truly a trip of a lifetime. I hope you guys enjoy the video!

Climbing Mount Gower | Lord Howe Island
I set the goal of visiting Lord Howe Island and scaling Mt Gower for my 50th year in May 2018.
We started our Lord Howe Island trip with a day trip out to the see the amazing Balls Pyramid with Jack Shick then on our 2nd day I climbing Mt Gower with him.
Mount Gower is rated one of Australia's twenty best day walks/climbs. Jack is a fifth generation Islander and third generation mountain guide, following in the foot steps of his Grandfather and Father. Jack is the most experienced guide on Lord Howe Island with a total of more than 2300 guided trips to the summit. Jack has been a mountain guide for 20 years. There is no one on Lord Howe Island more experienced to guide you on an unforgettable day. Experience breathtaking views, see some of the Islands rarest plants and bird life. All walkers receive a free certificate to commemorate their trip as well.
Mt Gower is an iconic peak at the southern end of Lord Howe Island, rising 875m from sea level. Considered a medium to hard trek. The walk is around 14km return and takes about 8.5 hours to complete, so you need to be in good health and have no knee or back problems. The walks are scheduled for every Monday and Thursday #justdoit
