Overton, NV residents evicted from homes during shutdown
October 4th, 2013 - Overton, NV - Homeowners were ordered out of their residences by Park Rangers as a result of the partial government shutdown. Although these residents were unaffected by the 1995 Clinton shutdown, the Obama administration seems determined to inflict as much damage as possible on American citizens.

Rivers & Headwaters is a regional folklife fieldwork project to identify and document tradition bearers and traditional activities related to rivers, headwaters, and watersheds in western United States.
Our focus has been the Muddy River, which empties into Lake Mead and the Colorado River. In addition to Southern Paiute and historic Mormon settlement, we discovered occupational groups whose work lives revolve around, or are related to, the headwaters and Muddy River watershed.
These include farmers and ranchers, irrigation and hydrology specialists, and various scientists. These two films capture two very different occupations and traditions enabled by the presence of the Muddy River – those of pomegranate farmers and wildlife biologists.

Visiting Clark County Museum - Nevada
We visited Clark County Museum located on Boulder Highway in Henderson, NV. The museum has an indoor exhibit showcasing ancient times and an outdoor area with historic homes and old trains that they let you go inside. They even had a Print Shop, not the software I have on my computer...lol, but an authentic vintage news press room. The museum was a fun place to visit. Watch the above video.

Las Vegas Outdoor, Ancient Las Vegas Petroglyphs
Just outside of Las Vegas Nevada are some beautiful and un spoiled spots. Just 10 minutes from our home, in and around the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area we found these beautifully preserved petroglyphs.
Thanks to Richard Guiry who originally found this great spot and Joe Whatley who lead the way.

Secret of Lake Meade: America's Cultural Heritage Underwater
Funded by NCPTT, Montana Public Television has produced a series of videos that highlights the nation's underwater archeological treasures and features the preservation work of the National Park Service Submerged Resources Center.
According to Ronald Tobias of Montana Public Television, The project came as a result of the realization that the Submerged Resources Center had been archiving images of the America's underwater parks for many years and that it was being under-utilized as a valuable internal resource. Since outreach is such an important part of our federal research mandate, Larry Murphy agreed to allow Montana Public Television access to the archives, and with the grant money awarded to us from NCPTT we were able to create a series of programs for public television about the work being done to preserve many of our country's treasures underwater.
As a result of NCPTT funding, six half-hour programs have been created that chronicle the work of the Submerged Resources Center's effort to save and preserve several important sites, including the USS Arizona in Hawaii, the B-29 Bomber at the bottom of Lake Mead, the Ellis Island ferry in New York harbor, and shipwrecks at Fort Jefferson and Biscayne National Park and at Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. Public awareness of the Park Service's work to preserve our national heritage is an important part of the mission of the Park Service, and NCPTT's funding made these presentations possible. Without the support, the archive material would have slowly slumped its way toward oblivion.
Sex Anyone? We Toured a Brothel Outside Las Vegas, Nevada
When I was given the unusual assignment of touring a Nevada brothel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But there I was, at Sheri’s Ranch, a brothel that calls itself ‘Nevada’s first and only full-service legal sex resort.’ Sheri’s Ranch is located in Nye County, which is one of several counties in Nevada where prostitution is legal. 'I think it's really intimidating if you've never been to a brothel before. Because it's unknown, you have in your mind it's this seedy dark place that is just full of bad stuff. And then you come in and realize it’s not like that at all,’ said Dena, the madam at Sheri’s Ranch, who didn’t want to share her last name. Discretion is the name of the game at Sheri’s Ranch, which kept customers away from our camera, and limited our access to the prostitutes who work there. Sheri’s Ranch definitely did not look seedy when you walk in the door, entering an ornate lobby with white couches, a white piano, and artwork on the walls. Whether it’s ‘full of bad stuff’ is open to interpretation.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. It is a major port in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of 2017, Portland had an estimated population of 647,805, making it the 26th-largest city in the United States, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest (after Seattle). Approximately 2.4 million people live in the Portland metropolitan statistical area (MSA), making it the 25th most populous MSA in the United States. Its Combined Statistical Area (CSA) ranks 18th-largest with a population of around 3.2 million. Approximately 60% of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.Named after Portland, Maine, the Oregon settlement began to be populated in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the world, a hub for organized crime and racketeering. After the city's economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, its hard-edged reputation began to dissipate. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland became noted for its growing progressive political values, earning it a reputation as a bastion of counterculture. The city operates with a commission-based government guided by a mayor and four commissioners as well as Metro, the only directly elected metropolitan planning organization in the United States. The city government is notable for its land-use planning and investment in public transportation. Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally conscious cities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, expansive network of public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) of public parks. Its climate is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been called the City of Roses for over a century.
Sonic Futures: The Music of Afrofuturism
Three musical giants who have made monumental contributions to Afrofuturism as we know it today, George Clinton, Nona Hendryx, and Vernon Reid, in conversation with world-renowned scholar and critic Alondra Nelson. The panelists discuss Afrofuturism – where it came from, where it is going, and what it has to offer us. Featuring opening remarks by Gus Casely-Hayford, Director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art.
Panelists:
Nona Hendryx:
In the spirit of two-fisted political singer songwriters such as Nina Simone, and Joni Mitchell, Nona Hendryx tackles social issues, love and politics with a smoky vocal tessitura somewhere between funk and the end of the stratosphere. Hendryx’s legendary career spans decades of sound and style evolution. Fans know her as a founding member of the group who morphed from Patti Labelle and The Bluebells, into the Rock & Funk Glam Diva's 'Labelle' with the #1 record, Lady Marmalade. Nona Hendryx emerged as the chief songwriter of the group’s socially conscious and illuminating message songs.
George Clinton
George Clinton is one of the foremost innovators of funk music and was the mastermind behind the bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Clinton has become recognized as the godfather of modern urban music. Beats, loops, and samples of P-Funk have appeared on albums by OutKast, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, De La Soul, Fishbone, and many others. As Clinton has said, funk is the DNA of hip-hop and rap. In 1997, Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Guitar Center's Hollywood Rock Walk, and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the NAACP Image Awards.
Vernon Reid
London-born American guitarist, founder of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition, Vernon Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what kinds of music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk, R&B and avant-garde jazz, and his anarchic, lightning-fast solos have become a hallmark. In 1980, he joined Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, and over the course of the decade, Reid went on to work with a wide variety of experimental musicians including Defunkt, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay, and Public Enemy. Vernon has also composed for noted film-makers Charles Stone 3rd, Shola Lynch, Gabri Christa, Brad Lichtenstein, Kasi Lemmons, Laurence Fishburn, & Thomas Allan Harris.
Moderator:
Dr. Alondra Nelson
Alondra Nelson, President of the Social Science Research Council and Harold F. Linder Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, is an acclaimed researcher and author, who explores questions of science, technology, and social inequality. Her books include Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight Against Medical Discrimination, The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation after the Genome and Technicolor: Race, Technology and Everyday Life. In 2002, Nelson edited “Afrofuturism,” an influential special issue of the journal Social Text, drawing together contributions from scholars and artists, who were members of a synonymous online community she established in 1998.
