California's Lost Coast: Cape Mendocino to Ferndale and US 101
Here's a look at the twisty, turny, curvy drive from the excellent Cape Mendocino area on the Lost Coast to Ferndale, and then on to US Highway 101.

I made this trip in August, 2015. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Driving to the Lost Coast of California
Music by: David Cutter Music -
Petey & I drive north to the lost coast of California. This is a section of the California coast that was so rugged, they decided not to run all the main freeways around it. On the way, we stop off at the Richardson Grove State Park to walk through the redwoods. We camp at Wailaki Campground in the King Range operated by the BLM.

Lost Coast of California: Mattole Beach to Cape Mendocino
This video includes some of the best parts of the Lost Coast: the drive begins at Mattole Beach, returns to Petrolia, then up and over the hills to reach a long stretch of coastal highway that ends at Cape Mendocino. It includes video from the rear-view cam, so watch for it!

Lost Coast Tour: Garberville to Mattole Beach
This drive continues my tour of the Lost Coast region of northern California. It starts in Garberville, and heads west, on some very curvy roads, ending at Mattole Beach near Petrolia.

Some slight sportbike off-roading. By far the best part of the trip. Transition and views were epic.
10/10 would do again!
Lost Coast and Shelter Cove in California

Motorcycling California's Lost Coast
In an area only accessible by a few back roads discover the California Lost Coast. Motorcycle ride into Humboldt's mystic coastline which is one of Northern California's most rugged and remote countrysides. Afterward's settle in for a tasty burger at the No Brand Burger Stand in the Victorian Village of Ferndale.

The Lost Coast - Usal Road Mendocino California 2013
We went on a photo safari over the Usal road to Usal Beach.
A sign at the beginning of Usal road reads Road not maintained during winter months. Use at your own risk. This is the southern boundary of California's Lost Coast, an area so steep and rugged that road building is problematical, but as a result it is one of the less spoiled parts of California. It has been heavily logged but parts are now protected and the difficult access may help with its healing. This makes a great day trip from the Fort Bragg area for tourists and locals alike and a chance to see some remote country. A lot of work has been done on the road since my last trip so it is an easy ride for the Geo Tracker. Beware the winter months though unless you are an experienced 4 wheeler with a back up vehicle.

This was shot in 1080i and deinterlaced with the JES deinterlacer. There is so much movement that it was difficult to compress so I cut it down to 720p and its still 160 MB per minute using H264 quality high. The clips shot from the moving truck show a curious double image even before deinterlacing, which makes it look out of focus. My guess is that the truck engine was vibrating the camera at just the wrong frequency but if anyone has a better explanation Id like to hear it. Its particularly evident in the last clip as the shot pans through the brush and trees and the overhanging branches at about 2:48.

Road Trip to California's Lost Coast
The Lost Coast is an off-the-beaten-path destination in Northern California, filled with seals, starfish, redwood trees, the Black Sand Beach and gorgeous, rocky coasts. We road tripped up to the Lost Coast from San Francisco, which took about 4 hours with plenty of lookout spots along the way.
Here’s a breakdown of the trip – enjoy, and happy travels!
0:15 – Avenue of the Giants, a long highway stretch of Redwood trees that runs through Humboldt Redwoods State Park
0:51 – Tides Inn, our adorable little hotel/ inn right on the waterfront. We had seals in our back yard!
1:14 – Black Sand Beach, the 3.5-mile beach at the southern base of California’s Lost Coast. Definitely a beauty!
3:00 – Seals! Right outside our inn! We spent, like, forever there. So many of them, and no one was even around us watching them.
4:16 – One more stop on the Avenue of the Giants – just can’t get enough of those Redwoods!
To say it was an epic road trip up to the Lost Coast would be the understatement of the century. It was peaceful, charming and a place I CANNOT WAIT to revisit!
