Into the Deep-End of Chengdu’s Food Scene w Lost Plate Tours
I've lived in Chengdu for a year and a half. I've tried so much incredible Sichuan food - soups, stir-fries, hot pots, and more - but it's time to go deeper into the Chengdu food scene. There are so many restaurants and food stalls in Chengdu, that it's hard to find the best places, so I'm enlisting the help of Lost Plate, a company that specializes in food tours. They have a reputation for finding the hidden gems of the Chengdu culinary world.
Our ride was a tuk-tuk, complete with a cooler full of beer. We zipped from food stand to restaurant, trying as much food as we wished. Everything was delicious and the atmospheres had exactly what I look for when I'm traveling overseas - authenticity. We ate fried rice balls, egg pancakes, wontons, various noodles dishes, shuizhu pork, century egg, and all sorts of interesting meats skewered on sticks (ever eaten the palm of a duck? How about pigeon stomach?). I was thoroughly impressed by the knowledge of our guide Ling. She made me realize that I have a long way to go before I can call myself an expert in Sichuan cuisine. I guess I'll have to keep eating... ????
???? If you want to book a tour with Lost Plate, it's as easy as heading over the and filling in some information. The have tours in Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai and Xian. ????
Please check out my series Chengdu: City of Gastronomy where I am eating my way through a deck of cards. I bought a deck of food themed playing cards that feature a different Sichuan dish on every card. Every week I'll shuffle the deck and pick one random card to hunt down and sample.

Mapo Tofu - Why I Moved to Chengdu! // Chengdu: City of Gastronomy 50
Mapo Tofu is one of my favorite dishes of all time, and in this video I’m heading to the place that is thought to have invented the dish Chen’s Mapo Doufu in, of course, Chengdu. I’ve very excited to be trying their mapo tofu for the very first time. I remember reading about the restaurant long before I moved to Sichuan. It was on my list of things to do in Chengdu. Somehow, I forgot about it. In the excitement of moving to a new city, Chen’s Mapo Doufu got lost. After eating plate after plate of mapo tofu, it lost the WOW that it once had when I was eating it only occasionally. What was I thinking? How did it take me so long to try my favorite dish from the very place that invented it?
I have to say, Chen didn’t disappoint. This nicely decorated restaurant, which is very much a tourist attraction, does in fact make the best mapo tofu I’ve ever had. It was thick and rich, oozing with mala, and creamy with braised tofu. The bits of ground beef made the dish even better. Many restaurants substitute it for ground pork. The serving at Chen’s also comes in a sizzling hot clay pot. Mapo tofu, to most people living in Sichuan, is a dish. But going to Chen’s Mapo Doufu is an experience. It’s not one you should miss if you are traveling to Chengdu, Sichuna, China.
WHERE TO GET MAPO TOFU IN CHENGDU
The answer is pretty much anywhere, but if you want the best, from the place that invented it, head to Chen's Mapo Doufu.
陈麻婆豆腐 - chén mápódòufǔ
Address: 中国四川省成都青羊区西玉龙街197号 - 197 Xi Yu Long Jie
Map:
Dish: 婆豆腐 - má pó dòu fǔ
There are a lot of really well made Sichuan classics at this restaurant:
宫保鸡丁 - Kung Pao Chicken
回锅肉 - Twice cooked Pork
鱼香肉丝 - Fish Fragrant Pork
夫妻肺片 - Husband and Wife Lung Slices
In this series, I am eating my way through a deck of cards. I bought a deck of food themed playing cards that feature a different Sichuan dish on every card. Every week I'll shuffle the deck and pick one random card to hunt down and sample. Chengdu was the first Asian city to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. It's full of incredible food - a lot of which you probably don't know about.

My Favorite Chuan Chuan Joint in Off the Beaten Path, Chengdu, China
Chuan chuan is the most popular thing to eat in Chengdu, and probably all of Sichuan. It took me a long time to pick out a chuan chuan place to recommend in my food guide
(Get it here:
but I chose this restaurant because the flavors are top-notch, the staff are really friendly and patient with non-Chinese speakers, the atmosphere is the type that I enjoy - a kind of hidden away, low key, bare-bones, family joint that gets lively at night. We went purposefully to avoid the rush, but this place will get busy late into the night, especially on weekends.
Chuan chuan is an easy meal to order if you can't speak Chinese. You just need to communicate how spicy you want it (wei la - little spicy, zhong la - medium spicy, bu la - no spicy). If you don't tell them, they'll likely make it just a little spicy, which in Sichuan is quite spicy. I actually don't find this place overly spicy. I think the heat levels of their pot when I order medium spicy is perfect.
This is the last video in my Making of an Ultimate Food Guide series, where I show off some places that I put in my food guide. You can watch the other episodes (to get a sense of the guide that I put together) here:
Or, check out my Chengdu: CIty of Gastronomy series here:
Every single dish in the series (all 54) are in the guide. The guide has 70 dishes and 55 restaurant recommendations. It took me 3 years to try everything and put it all together. If you are traveling to Sichuan and you love food, this is a must-buy item.

Travel Food: Food in Chengdu, China
Here is a quick video of the foods in Chengdu. Chengdu really delivers, with as much spice as I had yearned for. Hot pot is on every corner and the locals eat it almost every day (although I did learn that there are more stomach surgeries per capita here than in any other region in the world). While I didn’t try the curd blood hot pot, I loved the spicy vegetable soup, spicy tofu and spicy braised pork knuckle, as well as pear tea and a spicy fruit cocktail.
While I’d thought all cuisine in Chengdu was spicy, it turns out that’s not the case. I also learnt on my return trip that Chengdu was responsible for printing the world’s first paper money more than 1,000 years ago and that it hasn’t changed its name for 2,500, making it the longest continually-named city in history.
