Hallsands, the lost village.
Hallsands is a village and beach in south Devon, England, in a precarious position between cliffs and the sea, between Beesands to the north and Start Point to the south.
The early history of Hallsands is unknown, but a chapel has existed there since at least 1506. The village was at a cave known as Poke Hole, and probably was not inhabited before 1600.[1] The village grew in size during the 18th and 19th centuries, and by 1891 it had 37 houses, a spring, a public house called the London Inn, and a population of 159. Most residents of Hallsands at that time depended on fishing for a living, particularly crab fishing on the nearby Skerries Bank.
On 26 January 1917, a combination of easterly gales and exceptionally high tides breached Hallsands' defences, and by the end of that year only one house remained habitable. The villagers' fight for compensation took seven years.
Derelict Village (1960)
Beautiful M/S of the Devon coastline, with the sea lapping at a rocky cove (I need a holiday!); panning left to show part of a derelict village on the rocks above the beach. Nice M/S of waves bubbling over rocks in the shallows; commentator says this is the site of the once proud fishing village of Old Hallsands.
M/Ss in the village showing some of the old houses, and an elderly woman, Elizabeth Prettejohn, collecting driftwood among the ruins. Commentator says she is the last inhabitant of the village and is nearly 80 (she is, in fact, 75 according to notes on file!). She is dressed in an old brown overcoat with an orange woollen scarf around her head; C/U of her weather beaten face, intercut with shots of the waves crashing in over the rocks; a lighthouse is seen in the distance as the coast curves round.
Various shots of the ruined village as commentator explains that a bank of protective shingle was removed from the shore at the turn of the century to make concrete for the extension of Plymouth dockyard; and the sea moved up the cliff. M/Ss of Elizabeth feeding her hens; we are told she lives off their eggs and crabs and fish that are either given to her by fishermen in exchange for work or that she catches herself.
More shots of the salt-eroded houses against the sea (natural sound of the waves lapping); we see windblown grass growing on what was once a fireplace and mantelpiece. Commentator tells of how conditions in the village deteriorated until 1917 when a gale lasting four days and nights devastated it; everyone left except Elizabeth's family.
Lovely C/U of waves breaking on the shore; various shots of Elizabeth fishing with a line from the edge of the cliff and of the ruins and waves. A rather poetic and melancholy story, for a change.
Note: There is a newspaper article from The Guardian on file about Miss Prettejohn and Old Hallsands.

Hallsands The Village That Collapsed Into The Sea
* For best viewing watch in HD *
In the early 1890s Hallsands was a small fishing village on the south coast of Devon. It was protected from the sea by a beach of sand and shingle. Then in 1897 a major dredging operation began not far from the village. Within a few years the level of the beach fell by about twelve feet, and the village was exposed to the direct impact of high tides and easterly winds. Several buildings were damaged or destroyed in storms during 1903 and 1904. Some buildings were repaired, and temporary protection was given by a new sea wall, but another major storm in January 1917 caused further devastation, and the village was abandoned.

THE VILLAGE THAT COLLAPSED INTO THE SEA
On a stormy night in January 1917, the Devon fishing village of Hallsands collapsed into the sea. The entire village was destroyed together with the livelihoods of its people.
This is just a short video of what is currently left of this ever changing landscape.
DOOMED VILLAGE
Way back in 1917, a tidal wave all but obliterated the village of Hallsands in South Devon. The villagers were evacuated. All that remains of their community are the ruined houses, the seagulls, and one old lady. She is Mrs Prettyjohn, who was born over 70 years ago at the London Inn, which stood here until the sea tore it away. And now, Mrs Prettyjohn lives in a house called Sea View, and she refuses to be intimidated. Here she was born and here she will stay!

Devon's LARGEST Hidden Mansion! (Everything Left Behind + Cars)
► SITE HISTORY: So this place helped to sky-rocket a good friend of mine into his youtube career. Racking up over 14 Million views on YouTube. Gaining media attention and helping to build his channel from a few hundred subscribers to 160,000 as of recording this video. And today we explore the place for ourselves.
The sad history of Mountfield House in Musbury, near Axminster, dates back to when it was built in 1865.
It was not listed as a Grade II building until March 10, 1981.
According to Historic England, the “small mansion” is roughcast with stuccoed dressings and a slate roof behind parapets. The two storey building has three bays, sash windows and a terrace with cast iron balustrade.
The last – and current – owner is 85-year-old Dr Annette Drummond-Rees. Dr Drummond-Rees studied at Guys Hospital in London between 1949 and 1953. She went on to work as a chartered physiotherapist and later obtained a doctoral degree in the NHS.
Part of the property was put up for auction in February this year but withdrawn just before the auction took place.
Mountfield was advertised as a “13 bedroom detached house” which was split into four flats.
With a guide price of just £95,000, the property was said to be located in “the historic village of Musbury” which was “conveniently situated between the bustling market town of Axminster with its main line rail station and the coast at Axmouth and Seaton”.
