Lostwithiel is a civil parish and small town in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom at the head of the estuary of the River Fowey. The name Lostwithiel comes from the Cornish lostwydhyel which means tail of a wooded area.
The origin of the name Lostwithiel is a subject much debated. In the 16th century it was thought that the name came from the Roman name Uzella, translated as Les Uchel in Cornish. In the 17th century popular opinion was that the name came from a translation of Lost (a tail) and Withiel (a lion), the lion in question being the lord who lived in the castle.
Lostwithiel is an historic borough. The Lostwithiel constituency elected two members to the Unreformed House of Commons, but was disenfranchised by the Reform Act 1832. It remained a municipal borough until the 1960s, when it became a civil parish.
The seal of the borough of Lostwithiel was a shield charged with a castle rising from water between two thistles, in the water two fish, with the legend Sigillum burgi de Lostwithyel et Penknight in Cornubia. Its mayoral regalia includes a silver oar, signifying its former jurisdiction over the River Fowey.
Lostwithiel railway station is on the Cornish Main Line from Plymouth to Penzance. It is situated on the south side of the town, just across the medieval bridge. The line was originally built for the Cornwall Railway which built its main workshops here, but the surviving workshop buildings were transformed into apartments in 2004. A branch line takes china clay trains to Fowey.
Lostwithiel's most notable buildings are St Bartholomew's Church and Restormel Castle. There is a small museum devoted to the history of the town. Once a stannary town, and for a period the most important in Cornwall, it is now much reduced in importance. There is a fine early fourteenth-century bridge with five pointed arches, and nearby the remains of the Lostwithiel Stannary Palace, with its Coinage Hall – this was the centre of royal authority over tin-mining, and 'coinage' meant the knocking off of the corner of each block of tin for the benefit of the Duchy of Cornwall. The small Guildhall has an arcaded ground floor. The old Grammar School has been converted into dwellings.

Lostwithiel
Walk just a few minutes from here across the railway line and River Fowey and you are in Lostwithiel, ancient capital of Kernow, old Cornwall. In the 13th century, Lostwithiel was the county town and main stannery town of Cornwall, established by the Normans for the export of tin. The river then was wide and deep and sea-going vessels were tied up along the quay ready for their trips to the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. “The Port of Fowi” was the second largest on the South Coast of England – hard to believe now!
Today Lostwithiel is a peaceful, friendly and charming town with fine pubs, restaurants, antique shops, boutiques, galleries and food outlets a plenty to suit every taste.

• From Lostwithiel railway station you can explore Cornwall without the worry of parking – visit Truro, Falmouth, Looe or St Ives easily by rail or get an all-inclusive ticket to the Bodmin steam railway, and you can all enjoy a drink or two as well
• Newquay is a leisurely rail trip away, or drive and explore Tintagel, Port Isaac (home of “Doc Martin”), Padstow (home to Rick Stein) and the coast down through Newquay to Perranporth with fantastic surfing beaches.
• Mevagissey, Polperro, Pentewan, Gorran Haven- just a few places less than an hour away (traffic dependent!) offering beautiful villages and fine sandy beaches on the South Coast.
The Great Britain 09 - 4: Central Highlands, April 9-10
Caledonian sleeper from Crewe (again with lovely announcer voice ;-)) to Aviemore with regular traffic and on by bus to the Strathspey museum railway at Boat of Garden and Broomhill. The staff was very hospitable and invited us into the signal box. After taking a landscape shot at Broomhill we took the steam train pulled by #17 Braeriach 0-6-0T (Andrew Barclay & Son, Kilmarnock works #2017, built in 1935) back to Aviemore. We pokered high and won by going to Dunkeld & Birnam where the Great Britain II would cross our train. As we got out it just pulled into the station with a Black 5 double header formed by 45231 The Sherwood Forester and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier. Just a few minutes later we were on our way north again to Inverness.

In this episode we arrive in the Cornish village of Lostwithiel. We have family there and like to visit when we can. August is a great time of year to visit as they have an event on called Sing Along the River.
Every Thursday in August lots of local musicians and bands congregate down along the river in Lostwithial and entertain the village with all sorts of styles of music.
Even better the event is free and they have a bar and food stands. We had a wonderful night and met up with one of Marianne's friends from home Rachael and her family who happened to be on holiday in Cornwall at the same time. We had a great night !!
Well worth a visit if your are in Lostwithiel in August.

We´ve spent 3 days in Cornwall. It is the beautiful part of England which is worth to visit even for more days and I suggest visit it definitely in summer. :) Visited places: Eden Project, Restormel Castle, Pendennis Castle, St. Catherine´s Castle, St. Michael´s Mount, Godrevy Lighthouse, Geevor Tin Mine, Minack Theatre, Land´s End, Tintagel Castle... It is my first video by Gopro Hero +, so it is not perfect but I will keep trying...

Harwich Train Ferry past and present
Army horses loaded in Cologne in railway wagons sail across from Holland on LNER Train Ferry Number 3 and still in wagons are unloaded in Harwich in front of a large crowd and several dogs. This is followed by various images relating to the train ferries and the railway drawbridge gantry, which is now a protected industrial heritage site in the buoy yard of Trinity House in Harwich. Hope it's been rustproofed!
