Korea′s two largest movie chains fined for unfair competition
CJ CGV, 롯데시네마 ′스
But the competition within the industry is growing fierce.
That said,... Korea′s regulatory authority has slapped millions of dollars in fines on two of the nation′s biggest movie chains for unfair practices.
For more on this report,... here′s Connie Kim.
Korea′s two biggest movie chains CGV and Lotte Cinema have been fined a combined five million U.S. dollars for engaging in unfair practices.
These practices include giving affiliate distributors more screens to show their movies and allowing them to screen the films for longer periods of time.
The Fair Trade Commission said the moves gave CJ CGV and Lotte Cinema an unfair advantage at the box office.
The FTC pointed to two hits in particular: CJ E&M′s Masquerade, a 2012 film that attracted more than 10 million viewers,... and Lotte Entertainment′s The Taste of Money, which was released that same year on triple the number of screens than competing films.
The watchdog said the two movie chains also gave out free movie discount coupons without the consent of distributors.
It′s meaningful because the commission is taking strong legal action for the first time against the unfair practices of large, vertical integrated cinema chains.
The case has put the oligopoly of the Korean film industry back in the spotlight.
The top three multiplexes in Korea make up more than 90 percent of screen shares in the country.
About 30 percent of all films produced each year aren′t even released in theaters.
Experts say a new platform for independent, low-budget films is needed for diversification.
I think it is a great idea for major companies to build theaters designed specifically for smaller films, but not if it′s merely a temporary means to avoiding the separation between distribution and screening.
Market watchers say if these theaters reserved for small firms are given enough support, a positive synergy effect in the industry can be created.
Connie Kim, Arirang News.

Industry Insight: Korea′s multiplex movie chains go global
인더스트리 인사이트: 해외로 진출하
Korea boasts a strong film industry,... currently the seventh largest in the world.
Today, we focus on where... those movies are being shown here in Korea,... where multiplexes are adapting with the times and people's preferences.
Our cultural correspondent Park Ji-won reports on their success at home... and abroad... on Industry Insight.
According to the Korean Film Council, 80 percent of the 333 movie theaters across the nation... are multiplex theaters.
And of those multiplexes,... more than 40 percent are CJ CGV branches,... the number one movie theater chain in Korea,... followed by Lotte Cinema.
CGV opened Korea's very first multiplex in Seoul in 1998.
Since then, they have brought in a number of innovative features,... including the nation's first 3D and 4D screens as well as Korea's first premium screen called Gold Class in 2001.
The cost for this premium seat is three times higher than a normal ticket, but you can enjoy free snacks and beverages, as well as this spacious and comfy sofa, where you can relax and enjoy the movie.
Another keyword of their success is cultureplex.
CGV branches don't just offer customers premium movie-watching experiences.
They also provide a mix of things to eat, like gourmet popcorn... and things to see, like exhibitions and even busking performances.
CGV provides better membership benefits compared to other movie chains. There's also a lot of restaurants nearby and it has a good concession menu.
Lotte Cinema is another major multiplex operator,.... taking up about 35 percent of the market.
Recently Lotte Cinema opened Asia's largest multiplex movie theater at Lotte World Mall in southern Seoul,... with 21 screens that can accommodate 46-hundred moviegoers.
It offers premium facilities with a lot of amenities. The interior is modern and clean.
The new theater also has the world's largest projection screen, which has been recognized by Guinness World Records.
Based on the success here, Korea's multiplex chains have advanced into the global market.
About 200-million movie tickets were sold in Korea last year, meaning one person in Korea watched more than four films a year, on average. This number is higher than the U.S. figure. So we can say Korea's movie theater industry has pretty much reached full saturation and is seeing its limit. That's why CGV and Lotte Cinema are focusing on expanding their presence in foreign markets.
CGV opened its its first foreign branch in Shanghai in 2006.
Today, the company has 31 theaters throughout China, 16 in Vietnam, and one in the U.S.
It also has a management contract to operate 12 theaters in Indonesia.
It's really about the movie-going experience, the premium experience of sound, screen, and seat, as well as cultureplex model. Ultimately those things will work abroad, and absolute part of our strategy. In addition to that what we hope to do in a longer term is really focus on Asian content.
Lotte Cinema also advanced into the global market in 2008, starting in Vietnam.
We opened the theater in Vietnam in 2008, two years earlier than in China. Now we are the number two movie chain in Vietnam,... and we aim to be number one by 2018. By then, we hope to have at least 60 branches in Vietnam and in China,... with a goal of raking in some 300 million U.S. dollars in annual revenue.
Both CGV and Lotte Cinema say they are focused on China and Southeast Asia for the initial phase of their global investment.
But ultimately, they want to expand elsewhere,... based on things that have worked for them here in Korea.
Both hope that, in the coming decades,... their branches that spread throughout the world... rake in more revenue than those based here in Korea.

It is a fancier version, where you have a lounge, can order wine to your seat, and can literally lay down. They also provide blankets! it was a cool experience, but I'm not sure I would pay 35,000won for it
South Korea to build world's first 'invisible' skyscraper
Originally published on September 16, 2013
The South Korean government has approved a proposal from a US based firm, GDS Architects to build the world's first 'invisible' skyscraper near Seoul's Incheon International Airport.
Known as Tower Infinity, the 450 meters tall building reportedly will be equipped with a LED facade system on its outer wall. Eighteen weatherproof cameras will be placed at three different heights on the six sides of the building to capture real-time images of the building's surroundings.
Through digital processing, the images of the building's surroundings will be scaled, rotated and merged to create a seamless panoramic image that will be projected onto the LED screens of the buildings, creating the illusion of invisibility.
The company also claims that managers of the building will be able to alter the level of power used to give the building different levels of invisibility.
It was reported that the tower is being built purely for entertainment purposes. It will include a movie theater, roller coaster, water park and numerous food and beverage outlets. The tower will also have the third highest observation deck in the world.
The tower will be constructed right outside South Korea's Incheon International Airport. It was reported that the designers promised that the building will be visible to airplane pilots at all times. It will also be fitted with flashing warning lights. However, no target completion date for the tower has been released yet.
When completed, the tower will clock in as the sixth-highest tower ever built, coming in behind Tokyo's Sky Tree, Guangzhou's Canton Tower, Toronto's CN Tower, Moscow's Ostankino Tower and Shanghai's Oriental Pearl.

Seoul, South Korea – Part 4
Seoul, officially the Seoul Special City, is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea, forming the heart of the Seoul Capital Area, which includes the surrounding Incheon metropolis and Gyeonggi province, the world's second largest metropolitan area with over 25.6 million people. It is home to over half of South Koreans along with 632,000 international residents. With a population of over 10 million, the megacity is the largest city proper in the OECD.
Situated on the Han River, Seoul's history stretches back more than 2,000 years when it was founded in 18 BCE by Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. It continued as the capital of Korea under the Joseon Dynasty. The Seoul Capital Area contains five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeok Palace, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine, Namhansanseong and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Seoul is surrounded by mountains, the tallest being Mt. Bukhan, the world's most visited national park per square foot. Modern landmarks include the iconic N Seoul Tower, the gold-clad 63 Building, the neofuturistic Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Lotte World, the world's second largest indoor theme park, Moonlight Rainbow Fountain, the world's longest bridge fountain and the Sevit Floating Islands. The birthplace of K-pop and the Korean Wave, Seoul was voted the world's most wanted travel destination by Chinese, Japanese and Thai tourists for three consecutive years in 2009–2011 with over 12 million international visitors in 2013, making it the world's 10th most visited city and 6th largest earner in tourism.
Today, Seoul is considered a leading and rising global city, resulting from an economic boom called the Miracle on the Han River which transformed it from the ashes of the Korean War to the world's 4th largest metropolitan economy.
Seoul is the world's most wired city. Seoul Station is the main terminal of the KTX high-speed rail and the Seoul Subway is the world's largest subway network, considered the world's best subway by Jalopnik, providing 4G LTE, WiFi and DMB inside subway cars. Seoul is connected via AREX to Incheon International Airport, rated the world's best airport nine years in a row (2005–2013) by Airports Council International. Lotte World Tower, a 556m (1,824 ft) supertall skyscraper with 123 floors, is being built in Seoul to become the OECD's tallest in 2015 with the world's tallest observation deck and art gallery. Its Lotte Cinema houses the world's largest cinema screen. Emporis ranked Seoul's skyline having the world's fourth highest visual impact among major cities.
