The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas (龍虎塔)
The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas (龍虎塔)
Among all the attractions in Kaohsiung, the Lotus Pond (蓮池潭) is probably one of the most popular ones. This artificial lake was opened in 1951, and it is located in the Zuoying District. There are many attractions around the area, including the Dragon Tiger Pagodas (龍虎塔), the Spring and Autumn Pavilions (春秋閣), the Confucius Temple (孔廟), and many other temples.
Dragon and Tiger Pagodas is a temple located at Lotus Lake in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The temple was built in 1976. One of the towers is the Tiger tower, the other one being the Dragon tower. The seven story tower has yellow walls, red pillars and orange tiles. The front connects to the shore with a bridge. There are paintings inside the temple depicting Ksitigarbha. In the Tiger Tower, there are paintings of twelve Magi and the Jade Emperor's thirty palaces as well as paintings of Confucius. The towers have a double spiral staircase, one each for ascending and descending visitors. This building is representative of traditional Kaohsiung culture.Overlooking the towers are the Small Tortoisemountains, Spring and Autumn Pavilions, 5-mile Pavilion and Pei Chi Pavilion, as well as a surrounding lake.
In Chinese culture, dragons symbolize auspicious power and strength, and they have control over water, including rain, floods, etc. In ancient China, emperors used dragon as a symbol, and you can see this symbol on their imperial robes, which were also known as the “dragon robes”.
Dragon is also one of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, and some Chinese people believe that those who are born in the Year of the Dragon are smarter and more blessed than others.
Tigers, on the other hand, symbolize prowess, righteousness, and harmony in Chinese culture. Instead of “lion king”, the Chinese people believe in “tiger king” – the king of all animals. Like dragon, tiger is also one of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs.
There is a sign outside the pagodas that tells you to enter through the dragon’s mouth and come out from the tiger’s mouth. It says that by doing this, you’ll be able to get rid of your bad luck and increase your good luck. I, of course, followed this instruction and entered through the dragon’s mouth.
Inside the “body” of both the dragon and the tiger are paintings depicting various Buddhist and Daoist (Taoist) characters and stories.
*No admission fees at all its free, but you can see some donation box if you want to donate for the temple.
