Lough Neagh is not just an attraction when it comes to the different places that one should visit in Northern Ireland, but it is also one of Game of Thrones shooting locations which are found in Northern Ireland that made the idea of travelling to Northern Ireland more common among GOT fans (
It is important to pay much attention to Lough Neagh because it is not just the largest freshwater lake in Northern Ireland and the largest lake by area in the British Isles, but it even carries a rank when it comes to the European Union since it is the 15th largest freshwater lake within the EU and is even ranked 31st in the list of largest lakes in Europe.
Lough Neagh is 20 miles away from Belfast which is not a huge distance for people to cross if they are coming to Belfast but will be thinking about heading to Lough Neagh. This lake is 20 miles long and 9 miles wide; it is very shallow around the margins and the average depth in the main body of the lake is about 30 feet.

In addition to ranking as the largest freshwater lake and appearing in Game of Thrones movie series, it is important to mention that from the things which are making this lake famous are the different uses which it helps with, such as being a water supply, a navigation point for boats, a place for bird watching especially for those who have an admiration for such a thing, and most importantly being one major industry for fishing for centuries.
Toome Canal in which Game of Thrones was filmed is definitely a good choice to go for when it comes to Lough Neagh because it could provide the person with a panoramic view over the lake and that is exactly how one will get the chance to enjoy the beauty of this place and receive some calmness of mind if that was the main reason behind visiting this place.
The view of the lake is always different, one gets to forget everything happening around and enjoy the calmness of the place and love what nature has to offer. In addition to Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland, there are actually different other lakes which could also be visited and checked for the views they have.
From the lakes which we visited before in Northern Ireland, there is Lough Carra in county Mayo, which is between Ballinrobe, Ballintubber, and Claremorris ( Lough Erne is another important option because it is the second biggest lake system in Northern Ireland and it is located in county Fermanagh ( In addition to these two different ones mentioned, there is also Lough Muckno that is located in county Monaghan in Ireland and which could also be another option for people to discover (
One of the best things about Ireland is the fact that it is the friend of nature; there are different parks, lakes, and places where green areas and water are taking over, giving visitors the chance to enjoy some time away from all the hassle of the city and at the same time give their kids the chance to play around and take their pets for a walk.

The lough is owned by the Earl of Shaftesbury.
The Newry Canal - from Lough Neagh to Carlingford Lough
An aerial study of the Newry Canal, filmed between April and June in 2016.
The Newry Canal was built to link the Tyrone coalfields (via Lough Neagh and the River Bann) to the Irish Sea at Carlingford Lough near Newry. It was the first summit level canal to be built in Ireland or Great Britain. It was authorised by the Commissioners of Inland Navigation for Ireland, and was publicly funded.
It was opened in 1742, but there were issues with the lock construction, the width of the summit level and the water supply. Below Newry, a ship canal was opened in 1769, and both Newry and the canal flourished.
By 1800, the canal was in a poor condition, and another £57,000 of public money was spent refurbishing it over the following ten years. Closures during the refurbishment resulted in a loss of traffic, which did not fully recover.
In 1829, both canals were transferred to a private company, who spent £80,000 on improvements over the next twenty years. The ship canal was enlarged in 1884, to allow ships of 5,000 tons to reach Newry. It reverted to public ownership in 1901, when the Newry Port and Harbour Authority was created. The canal closed in 1936 and most of it was officially abandoned in 1949, with some in 1956. The ship canal closed in 1966 and the Authority was wound up in 1974.
Two sections of the redundant canal were bought by local authorities, for two pounds each, and the middle section was given to another two local authorities. The ship canal has been reopened for use by pleasure craft, and there have been attempts to reopen the Newry Canal, which have not yet been successful.
The towpath has become part of a long distance footpath and also part of the National Cycle Network. Some restoration has taken place, and the canal has become a haven for wildlife. Parts of it are also used for coarse fishing.

Game Of Thrones Filming Locations - Lough Neagh aka Summer Sea in GOT - Season 5 Episode 5 - Kill The Boy
Lough Neagh was also transformed into the Smoking Sea, where Jorah steals a boat, takes Tyrion captive and sets sail to meet Daenerys in Meereen. Tyrion wakes up in the boat after being knocked unconscious and realizes where they are... the Ruins of Old Valria.
This part of the epic TV show Game of Thrones was filmed on a quiet part of Lough Neagh - right along the shore line, where the trees twist strangely; a perfect setting.
For those who are not familiar with what Lough Neagh is, Lough Neagh is the largest lake by area in the British Isles and in general it is a large freshwater lake in Northern Ireland. Lough Neagh is located 20 miles west of Belfast and it is 20 miles long and 9 miles wide.
The interesting thing about Lough Neagh is that five out of the six counties in Northern Ireland share shores with it, and these counties are Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone, and Londonderry, the only county that does not share a shore with them is Fermanagh.
Lough Neagh is known to be used for different purposes according to the one using it; there are those ordinary people who enjoy watching the birds and fishing or just walking by it and sitting down to relax a bit, and there are those working with boats who use it for navigation purposes, and it is also used by Northern Ireland Water as a source of fresh water supply, which means that there are different other reasons to know more about Lough Neagh other than being part of Game of Thrones movie series that was filmed in Northern Ireland.
Game of Thrones movie series managed to take and film most of its scenes and shots in Northern Ireland and it actually succeeded in choosing those which are considered the most attracting and there were even some locations which people didn't know about before, which brought lots of GOT fans later to Northern Ireland and made them head for those places and check them off their lists.
The interesting thing about these different places in which Game of Thrones was filmed is that they started to place a board to tell people more about its appearance in the movie and at the same time inform them that they have reached their destination.
In addition to Lough Neagh, there were other locations that GOT was filmed at, such as Tollymore Forest Park in county Down ( the Dark Hedges in county Antrim which is the pathway of trees that has been standing there for hundreds of years ( Pollnagollum Cave in county Fermanagh is another spot where the movie was filmed ( there is also Glenariff which is known as 'Queen of the Glens' ( Mourne Mountains in county Down has also appeared ( and also the Binevenagh Mountain in county Londonderry (
The interesting thing for those making a tour related to Game of Thrones movie is that they will not only come to the point of visiting the locations in Northern Ireland, but they will also reach out for the hotels, bars, pubs, and restaurants in which the 10 doors are located, and this is pretty much an interesting part for experiencing how beautifully those doors are made from wood.
From those doors which we have visited before; we went to Mary McBride's Bar to check door number 8 ( we visited Ballygally Castle Hotel for door number 9 ( we also visited Fullerton Arms for door number 6 ( there is also the Dark Horse Bar in Belfast Commercial Court where door number 10 is found ( the Blakes of the Hollow pub is the destination for door number 4 ( and we also went to the Percy French Restaurant in Newcastle, county Down, in order to see door number 3 ( Those which we still haven't been to in order to check will be on our plan so soon.
Lough Neagh is a beautiful place for those who want to relax and also for those who want to check Game of Thrones locations.

Where to buy Lough Neagh Eels
Cathy Chauhan of The Lough Neagh Fishermen's Co-operative discusses where to buy Lough Neagh Eels #EelsAreTasty
Antrim Town & Civil Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
The Junction retail and leisure shop - this wasn't much of a trip for those trying to explore the touristic destinations in Northern Ireland, but it was more of a trip for those already living in county Antrim to know what this place has for them.
Every once in a while, you get to make a trip that is not cultural nor touristic or historical, but it is more of a trip to buy some treats - of course you will end up with getting things for the kids as well - which is exactly what happened with us.
The highlight of this trip was trying those jelly beans and seeing what color every single one of us prefers and likes the most - seems that I was the only one preferring the coffee ones, which is good to get them all :-) - and then comes the second part of this outing which is about getting some treats that are making it hard for us to stay a bit healthy.
If you want to get inside that shop - or supermarket - and you don't want your kids to come with you, you could leave them in the playing area outside and come back when you are finished - although we prefer that you stay with them even while playing outside - our kids loved it but they didn't get inside the arena and didn't try to play inside it, they instead chose to come with us to the shop.
The most exciting and interesting part for the kids inside that place was those small rabbits and chicks which they want to buy and keep - they looked really pretty and funny at the same time :-) and that of course came along with the part of choosing the treats they prefer and getting those jelly beans.
We all know that county Antrim is one of the six different counties that form Northern Ireland as a whole, with Belfast being its beating heart, which means that there are different things and several places and destinations that one could go to when it comes to co Antrim.
Since Belfast is the beating heart and the place people could start exploring county Antrim with, there are lots of cultural places and touristic destinations that people could head to, such as Belfast City Hall ( being the city where Titanic was built, there is also Titanic Museum which was built a century later ( the Cathedral Quarter is also a famous part of this city ( as well as lots of other places that might be related to the history and tourism of the city or else those which are more like restaurants, bars, pubs, and more, but which also have their names and clients.
From the things that highlight Antrim is Lough Neagh which is the largest lake in Ireland or even Britain ( where even one of the scenes in Game of Thrones was filmed, there is also the Giant's Ring which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site ( the nine Glens and Dunluce Castle ( and eventually reaching the area where the Giant's Causeway is located along with the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge which is also famously known about this area (
Belfast of course is the most famous destination that people could head out to when it comes to county Antrim because it is the capital city ( but there are still other destinations to be considered and one of those famous ones which also people love to visit and know more about is Ballymena which is a large town in county Antrim and which even stands as the eight largest in whole Northern Ireland.
So there are lots of different destinations in county Antrim, Northern Ireland, which you could choose from and head to according to your interests and the plan you have once placed. For those already living in Belfast and are close to the place we have been to and which we consider Antrim centre, we hope that this place was helpful and you would hit whenever you need to buy yourself something.
Have you ever been to county Antrim in Northern Ireland before? Where have you been exactly and what are the towns or places that you managed to visit and what are those which you loved the most and actually fell in love with? Share your experience with us!
Hope this video got your attention and hope you enjoyed it - and we are sure that you liked the debate about which colors of those jelly beans are more delicious than the others :-)))
This trip was a little bit quick because we were not exploring new places or trying to get people more into the details of a specific destination, but it was more about a fun day spent outside the house while the kids enjoy buying some of their favorite treats and things - me and Michelle also got our treats and tried those jelly beans with the kids, so it was fun for us as well :-))
