Significance of Vegetarian Festival in Phuket

Around the end of September
& early October each year,
the most notable event of Phuket island
is not on the beach but in the city & old town.
People wear white and abstain from meat.
Flags are put up decorating the whole island.
The vegetarian festival has begun.
From the 1st day of the 9th lunar month
until the 9th day, totally 9 days and 9 nights,
is when Chinese decedents in Phuket
keep to Jia Chai in Hokkien Chinese
which means eating vegetables.
In Phuket Vegetarian is Kiew Ong Chai
It originates from 4 Chinese letters.
They are Kiew, Ong, Seng Houy
which means ceremony.
Seng is the celebration of the 9 Emperor Gods.
The 9 Chinese Emperor Gods
are invited through 9 lanterns
representing 2 Emperor Gods,
Kiew Ong Tai The & Yok Ong Song The
who preside over the ceremony.
Before the 1st day of the 9th lunar month,
in the early evening participants gather
at many shrines, mostly in the city,
to attend important ritual ceremonies.
The pole raised in front of Chinese shrines
to hang 9 lanterns,
signifies that 9 days from now,
participants would observe
the long tradition of belief & faith
in a united way.
During the festival the so-called Ma Song,
or entranced devotees,
believed to be Mediums for God
or ancient Chinese who performed good deeds,
perform ascetic displays.
Ma Songs are entranced devotees
whom Gods enter during the fest.
Its part of the ritual ceremony.
The important ritual activities,
like street processions,
are eagerly waited for by people.
After the Gods are invited to be in a Ma Song,
they walk tirelessly through communities.
The Gods carriers are accompanied
along the way in the procession.
It is believed the MaSong are taking sufferings for the vegetarian participants
by torturing themselves,
not only giving aesthetic displays.
For the body piercing, we allow them
to use objects stated in the legend.
As for the piercing
or what we call supernatural powers,
it is not that they want to show off,
but purely to bear suffering for us.
Along both sides of roads,
people put up altars of worship with offerings.
It is crowded with participants & tourists
to worship or observe the processions.
Firecrackers are very loud sounds
to welcome the procession.
During the festival, firecrackers are used extensively across the island.
After 9 days, the 9 lanterns are brought down, to signify the end of the festival.
Religious & ritual ceremonies
during the vegetarian festival,
not only remind us of human life,
but also strengthen relations
among human beings
& those with sacred powers,
which people cannot prove scientifically.
