SkyeFlight - The First Video!
See what it's like to take your very own SkyeFlight with the team at the Skye Flying Club.
Flying is the best way to see the Isle of Skye. We'll fly you from our home airfield of Broadford just 6 minutes drive from the Skye Bridge. In this clip, Andrew, a local Doctor was surprised with a SkyeFlight on the launch day in June 2018 and absolutely loved it. His Flight took in the Isle of Pabay just to the north of Broadford and then turned south over the Sleat Peninsular and from that point on the Island you can see the world famous Cuillins and the mainland.

Beautiful Isle of Skye
Music: Come Home To Me, Tim Janis
A little video I made on my ipad of a trip to beautiful Skye earlier this year..
Before reaching Skye, I stopped off at Eilean Donan Castle, it appears a lot in pictures of Scotland, because it is so picturesque, and has appeared in many films and television programmes too.
Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnain) is a small tidal island where three lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland. The castle was restored in the early 20th Century, and a footbridge now connects the island to the mainland.
Then onto Portree the largest town on Skye... and the pictures show the colourful harbour..
The Skye Museum of Island Life at Kilmuir, was opened in 1965. The aim was to preserve a township of thatched cottages, each one depicting, as closely as possible, the conditions prevailing on the island at the close of the nineteenth century...The Weavers cottage is one of many preserved cottages..
Then onto Cill Chriosd (Christ's Church or Kilchrist) and is a ruined former parish church of Strathaird. It was constructed around the 16th century, replacing an earlier Medieval church on the same location, and was used until 1840 when the Parish church was relocated to Broadford.
I loved the old celtic cross stones, and the view of the mountains behind.. I think I scared the odd sheep as I wandered around..
The next place I photographed was Bla Bheinn..The name Blà Bheinn is thought to mean blue mountain, from a combination of Norse and Gaelic.
Moving onto the Storr...(Scottish Gaelic: An Stòr) and is a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula ..The area in front of the cliffs of the Storr is known as the Sanctuary. It has a number of weirdly shaped rock pinnacles, the remnants of ancient landslips.
And finally to beautiful Elgol.. (Scottish Gaelic: Ealaghol) and is a village on the shores of Loch Scavaig towards the end of the Strathaird peninsula..it is a crofting and fishing village, and I enjoyed dipping my toes into the water on a beautiful warm sunshiney day..
Scotland on a Budget | How to plan a trip to the Isle of Skye without flying, without a car, by rail
eyy check it out I made a video..
Tips for planning a trip to the Isle of Skye on a budget. We had an amazing and comparably cheap trip from the Isle of Wight to Skye, which we did without a car and without flying. The Scottish Highlands can be a very expensive destination, so these are some tips from our week in Broadford and Portree for how to do it without breaking the bank.
To see the full experience of this beautiful place, check out my video of the journey here:
We slept in a room on the Caledonian Sleeper, then rode the Deerstalker from Fort William to Mallaig, then the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, and then the stagecoach bus from Armadale to Broadford and later Broadford to Portree. More information:
One thing I didn't mention in this travel planning on a budget video, be sure to take waterproof trousers and a decent waterproof coat, even it's sunny when you leave. They saved us so many times!
Mostly if you avoid the temptation to have £20 local mussels for dinner and do whiskey tours, you will save a lot of money. We just made our own meals from the co-op and had a great time on hikes around Portree. Time spent outside on this island is never wasted, and I'd love to go back some day :) We saw the quiraing, fairy pools, fairy glens, and lots of Scottish history but didn't get to do a raasay boat tour because of bad weather.

SKYE: into the CUILLIN.
From the old bridge at Sligachan a signposted and well-maintained (but wet in places) path heads into Glen Sligachan, initially with rounded red hills on one side and jagged peaks on the other, then continues into the heart of the Black Cuillin. When the rounded hills and Marsco give way to the jagged view of Blaven on the left and the open view is down towards the Bloody Stone in Harta Corrie on the right, the path heads up to the Druim Hain bealach and generates fantastic views of the entire main ridge and of course Skye's hidden beauty spot 'the Loch of the Corrie of the Waters', namely Loch Coruisk. There is really no loch in Scotland set in such a magnificent setting: this renowned beauty spot is only accessible to those who set out on foot or by boat to reach there. It was Scott who immortalised this place, even tagging it before he left! Well, he chiselled out his initials on a rock near the Loch: but he certainly new how to describe it: -
For rarely human eye has known
A scene so stern as that dread lake
With its dark ledge of barren stone
We looked down upon Loch Coruisk, 2.5km long and 0.5km wide and tinged with mist at times, from the summit of Sgurr na Stri, a place regarded as Britain's finest viewpoint -- and so it most certainly was! The eagle's eye view of the Loch was breathtaking and well worth the 15-mile plus return hike. Scott was likewise impressed and wrote in his journal: - Though I have never seen many scenes of more extensive desolation, I have never witnessed any in which it pressed more deeply upon the eye and heart. The painters Danielson and Turner followed thereafter, with some painting the view more imaginatively and inventively than others. You can see the Bella Jane from Elgol sail into Loch Scavaig then Loch na Cuilce where tourists photograph seals basking on the rocks, before disembarking for the short 300-yard walk to the hidden secret that is Loch Coruisk, a spot created by retreating glaciers over 10,000 years ago. It now seems a long time ago since I stood there watching hikers waist deep coming over the stepping-stones of the River Scavaig, itself possibly one of the shortest rivers in the world. It's a fantastic view looking down on all of this.
On the slopes of Sgurr na Stri if you stumble upon the 9-foot high Captain Maryon's cairn (his skeleton was found there) then you are well off the path as it is above you: its certainly not a place to get caught out and be stumbling around in the mist. The inscription on the Captain's memorial begins Erected in memory of Staff Captain A.J. Maryon G.H.Q. India Command who met his death here in July 1946. He lay on this spot for nearly two years and now rests in Portree. Sgurr na Stri means 'Peak of Strife' and Captain Maryon is not the only military casualty of this mountain; in 1982 a United States F-111F aircraft flew into the mountain and crashed in a spectacular fireball.
[Theres always debate about mountain memorial cairns. However, the Captain's does seem appropriate in this place of solitude. Now, the six-foot memorial cairn above Tarbet on the Kintyre Way [see other videos] built by the local guy Andrew in respect of his nephews (who are not dead) -- well the jury is certainly still out on that one I'm afraid]
The lower west face of the mountain is host to the notorious Bad Step. The mountain's name is said to derive from a an eighteenth century dispute between the Macleods and the MacKinnons although a compromise was reached, presumably as the land was of use to neither of them. It's certainly an eerie place to walk about in the mist. Seton Gordon recalls, Can it have been the magic mist in which the nymph of Loch Coruisk conceals herself -- that nymph who comes there only when she knows that someone is present who will love her? Beside the loch, in the silent of the night, she sings and weaves beautifully, but never a word must one say to her. Mmm...must try a pint of what he had. But he continues From Coruisk the Cuillin are magnificent, but never more so than in the last sunset that precedes the night. Conversely, the Cuillin reach an extreme of bleakness in adverse weather.
The way back from this extremely complex and rocky miniature mountain above Lochs Coruisk and Scavaig is to simply retrace your route back to the Druim Hain bealach, get another look at Blaven (can vividly remember scrambling over to the cylindrical summit cairn on that summit many years ago as well) then head back to the Sligachan Hotel for a well-deserved beer. As you make the long slog back to the Hotel there is a moment when it appears rather close before disappearing out of sight for ages again! Then its back to the old bridge and that final jagged roller-coaster view of Sgurr nan Gillean as you head to the bar! Essentially, it should be remembered, the Cuillin mountains are for mountaineers.

The Leopard Man of Skye dies in Inverness BBC News
The most tattooed pensioner in the UK, who had lived as a recluse in Skye, has died in an Inverness care home.
Former soldier Tom Leppard had lived in a self-built bothy, with no electricity or furniture, near Kyleakin for 20 years.
In 2008 the Guinness World Record holder for most tattooed male senior citizen, who had 99.9% of his skin covered in cat-like design, decided to move into a house in Broadford.
He told BBC Scotland at the time that he was getting too old for that kind of life.

Hi! I'm Cécile, a French student of 19 years old. This summer, I went to Scotland with my family and we did a road trip. I decided to film a little bit everyday because I thought it was going to be amazing, and I wasn't wrong. After the trip, I wanted to edit the videos, and I realized I loved to do this. The videos turned pretty good, so I decided to upload these on Youtube to share this wonderful trip with others. It helped me to watch videos to plan my road trip, so I hope my little videos are going to help some of you to see the best of Scotland.
If you have any questions about the monuments, cities, hotels, restaurants, or if you want to know which camera I used or how I edited my videos, please, feel free to ask, I would love to answer your questions.
Also, if you want to see some photos I took in Scotland, you can check my Instagram:
I hope you enjoyed the video. With love, Cécile.

Otter spotting on the Isle of Skye

This is why the otter is so good as an ambassador for a healthy environment. If you''ve got otters it must mean your water is good, because they use the land and they use the water. If you''ve got beautiful, clean water, but nowhere for them to have a holt, you''re not going to have otters. If you''ve perfect land habitat, but the water''s filthy you''re not going to have otters, so both have got to be right.

We always rear them wild, because you cannot release a tame animal, so you''ve got to keep human contact to a minimum. The cubs stay with their mothers from a year to15 months in the wild, so we have to keep them for the same length of time, so it''s a long time that you''ve got to make sure that they keep away from people.

So this is an otter holt. And you can see it''s got a little path there and there would be sprainting points. And an otter holt has multiple entrances, it has an entrance here, you''ve got an entrance over there, and one back there. And over the years we have watched the female and cubs come into here.

Ok, here we have otter droppings, or the spraint, and it''s quite fresh. And you can see here there''s an otter path and an area over here where the otter has been rolling, because the otter relies on thermal insulation on the fur, so it has to keep the fur in perfect condition.
24. Close of spraint / droppings

26. Various of Grace collecting otter spraint

If the otter is sprainting on the grass it gets really green, because basically it''s fish fertiliser coming out of the back end, but here you''ve got a place where they''re doing the spraint, but it''s not on grass, so you''re getting a build up of algae as you can see the green here. And you''ve got some old spraint on the top here.
