Cardiff Tasting Tour with Loving Welsh Food
The Welsh love their food, so I was excited to be invited on a Cardiff Tasting Tour by Loving Welsh Food which is run by Cardiff-born Sian B Roberts.
Cuisine is a great way into a place's culture and history - and it's certainly true in Cardiff, with the Welsh traditions overlaid with waves of immigration from all around the world. The tour reflected this for sure, but it wasn't just about food (although here was quite a lot of eating) - I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Sian gave a general walking tour (to build up an appetite) and I learnt some details about Cardiff past that I'd not previously known.
Thanks to Austrian visitors Gerhart and Sonia (in town for an autumn rugby international!) and Dutch visitors Mona and Tamara, for letting me film the tour. Tamara is a massive fan of Cardiff and Wales generally. It was lovely to meet you all, especially a tourist as equally enthusiastic about Cardiff.

Welsh Food - 4 Things to Eat Taste Test in Cardiff, Wales
Join us at Y Mochyn Du pub in Cardiff, Wales as we explore Welsh Food for the first time sampling 4 different things to eat in this taste test. We started off with local Welsh beer and tea while ordering two different starters, a main dish and dessert to share between the two of us. The 4 different food items we tried were as follows:
1) Cawl (traditional Welsh soup)
2) Welsh Rarebit (melted cheese on sliced toast)
3) Faggots, gravy, mashed potatoes and peas
4) Rhubarb Crumble (sweet dessert with fruit)
All of it was delicious and to be honest the starters were the size of mains and we ended up feeling rather stuffed by the end of the meal. The portions at this pub are very generous.

Welsh Food - 4 Things to Eat in Cardiff, Wales travel and cuisine video transcript:
It is lunchtime here in Cardiff and we found a little pub that is called Y Mochyn Du I think. Welsh is a very complicated language. We've been here like almost a week and we haven't really tried Welsh food yet aside from Welsh cakes so we're like alright it is time to see what Welsh food is all about.
We've been sick and haven't been doing a whole lot.
We ordered two starters, one main, dessert, Sam got a pint. We're going to be sampling all things Welsh. Welsh food. All of it is local this is basically a Welsh food taste test.
Alright Sam, so I'm starting off with a pint. A pint. So this is I think uh Cwrw Y Mochyn Du. This is the local red ale beer and I'm so excited to try this.
And we think Cwrw means bore. It has a picture of a black pig. This is really nice beer. It has that kind of like craft beer taste.
Well, well for our appetizer we're starting off with the National Dish of Wales. We are having Cawl and when Sam ordered this he was like I'll have a bowl of Cawl.
This is kind of like a soup. What is here? Slash stew. I was reading about it online and it can have different ingredients.
So the classic usually has lamb and leeks but it can also have beef and potatoes, carrots like different seasonal vegetables. So yeah, this one has potato and carrots. I don't know if this is lamb or beef yet.
Okay, what is your appetizer? So next up we're having Welsh Rarebit. Not rabbit. Rarebit. Rarebit. I can assure you there is no rabbit in here. No rabbit. Basically it is kind of it looks like a gourmet piece of toast with cheese and bacon. Cheese melted over top.
It can be cheese or a cheese sauce apparently. I'm not sure if it is cheese or a cheese sauce. It could be maybe it is both. And it came with a little side salad and something to dip I think. I'm going to dip it in.
That is so good. The cheese is like it is really it has like kind of a creamy consistency. Mmmm. It is so tasty. You know I read that sometimes it can have Béchamel sauce.
Going in for the Welsh Rarebit not rabbit. Look at the cheese it is just melting off.
The main dish has arrived so this is Welsh Faggots and mushy peas and we have two giant like these are minced meat balls and apparently they have um lamb in them. Over here you can obviously see the mushy peas, you can see the mashed potatoes. Lots of onion gravy.
We were asking the bartender what is the most typical dessert we could order at a Welsh pub? And he was like Rhubarb crumble.
Anyways, on to price point. In total that came to 26 Quid and that included the two drinks, the pint. And the tea. The two appetizers which were more like mains. The main which was like a massive main and then an enormous dessert to share. It was 13 per person and we're leaving very full, very satisfied and we really enjoyed Welsh food and we would highly recommend you to try all of these dishes if you're visiting Wales.
This is part of our Travel in Wales video series showcasing Welsh food, Welsh culture and Welsh cuisine.
An American In Cardiff, Trying Welsh Food For The First Time
We met with American Travel Vlogger Jon Barr and helped guide him through a selection of traditional Welsh. Jon was visiting Cardiff, the capital city of #Wales for the first time.
???? Check out Jon’s channel ‘Here Be Barr’
We get to visit a little cafe “Garlands’ in Duke Street arcade, one of the many Victorian arcades in Cardiff city centre.
Jon tries an all-day Welsh breakfast with Laverbread, a traditional Welsh dish made from simmering seaweed. Cockles, a little shellfish found around the coast of the Gower Peninsula.
He also tries Welsh Lamb and Glamorgan Sausages.
We couldn’t let him visit Cardiff without trying a glass of Brains Dark in one of the pubs. We ended up in The Old Arcade, one of Cardiff’s traditional pubs. Brains is a Cardiff based brewery that has been operating since 1882.

10 Things to do in Cardiff, Wales Travel Guide
Join us from Cardiff, Wales as we cover 10 things to do in Cardiff city including popular attractions, cool castes, green escapes, and Welsh food worth trying in this travel guide. Although we were sick for most of our visit to Cardiff, UK we ended up still finding enough time to visit the city center, our neighborhood and a few off-the-beaten path attractions.
What we loved most about Cardiff, Wales is just how friendly the locals here are in the supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and cafe that we frequented. On a rainy day we might put on the kettle, down a few Welsh cakes and pop open our umbrella for a wee stroll. When it was sunny, which fortunately for us was most of the time, we enjoyed exploring castles and arcades while wandering around in parks.
Cardiff is a city you appreciate the more you linger. You start to find favorite cafes, restaurants and pubs you return to frequently and after a while you feel more like a local after recognizing faces in and around your neighborhood. This is what we'll remember most and why we recommend visiting Cardiff which is a city with more of a town vibe.

Our visit Cardiff travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a Welsh food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting neighborhoods, castles and museums. 10 Things to do in Cardiff, Wales Travel Guide Video Script:
Well hello hello from Cardiff, Wales. New destination for us. New destination. It is our very first time to Wales and we're so excited to be here. We've wanted to come to Wales for a really long time and we're going to explore Cardiff and show you guys what you can do here in this travel guide.
We started our visit of Cardiff Castle with a self-guided tour of the Castle Apartments. This is the newest-looking part of the castle as it was renovated in the early 19th century in the Gothic revival style. As part of the tour we got to see the Banqueting Hall, the Library, and a few different rooms, but the place that really caught our attention was the Arab room designed in a Moorish style which is quite different from the rest of the rooms.
We continued on to the Norman Keep, which dates to the 11th century. The 12-sided structure sits atop a hill and is surrounded by a moat, and if you climb to the very top you get some nice 360 degree views of the city.
And lastly, we visited the roman walls, and although these too have been renovated, the foundations date back to 50 AD.
And that’s it for our visit to Cardiff, Wales. Our trip was short and sweet but we hope this video gave you a few ideas of things to do in Cardiff on your own visit. Now you know the drill, if you have any other suggestions of cool things to do in and around Cardiff, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!
