2017 Selden Society inaugural Lord Atkin lecture by the Hon Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC
An annual Lord Atkin Lecture has been introduced this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lord Atkin – one of the common law’s most influential judges.
During his judicial career Atkin was not only respected as a technically proficient lawyer but admired for his insight and judgment. It was this combination of qualities that produced a number of judgments of lasting importance and global influence.
The Hon Susan Kiefel AC was appointed Chief Justice of Australia in January 2017. At the time of her appointment she had been a judge of the High Court since September 2007 and had previously served as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of Queensland.
Chief Justice Kiefel was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1975 and, in 1987, was the first woman in Queensland to be appointed Queen’s Counsel.

Q&A is a television discussion program that focuses mostly on politics but ranges across all of the big issues that set Australians thinking, talking and debating.
It is driven by interaction: Q&A provides a rare opportunity for Australian citizens to directly question and hold to account politicians and key opinion leaders in a national public forum and Q&A is broadcast live so that not only the studio audience but also the wider audience can get involved.
We aim to create a discussion that is constructive, that reflects a diverse range of views and that provides a safe environment where people can respectfully discuss their differences.
It’s impossible to represent every view on a single panel or in one audience but we’re committed to giving participants a fair go.
In order to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, the program is presented from a range of locations around the country and all Australians are encouraged to get involved through social media as well as by joining the audience.

How I got off kidney dialysis and cured my kidney disease
This is how I got off kidney dialysis and cured my kidney disease
(this is the program I followed)
Read the full story in my blog:
I have been suffering from Kidney problems for twelve years, due to constant urinary infections.
When my kidney failed, In 2011, I had to start kidney dialysis.
The kidney specialists that I had seen said that my kidney function will get worse and within 2 years I would have needed a kidney transplant. In June 2012 my kidney function was at 9% (stage 5) my Creatinine was at 705 (60 - 125), Urea was at 55 (2.5 - 6.5) and my Calcium was at 1.70 (2.13 - 2.63), so low that I was getting fluid build-up.
I was dialyzing Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
They said I needed a kidney transplant.
After a kidney transplant you have to take over 120 tablets per week for the first 2 years and then 3 tablets per day for the rest of your life.
When I was told I needed to do tests in August for kidney transplant I stepped up my researches.
And that's how I found this program.
So I got all the information from my research along with this program, and I followed it step by step.
It was unbelievable, within 7 weeks my kidney function went from 9% (stage 5) to 21% (stage 4), Creatinine was at 388 (60 - 125), Urea was at 19 (2.13 - 2.63) and Calcium was at 2.44 (2.13 - 2.63).
I was on dialysis only on Saturday.
The kidney specialists, doctors, and nurses, are amazed and confused at the same time at how can this be.
But this is not all.
Today, I'm no longer on dialysis. I know that this sounds too good to be true. Everybody was astonished by these results, the doctors, my family, everybody.
I was able to get off dialysis completely.
So I want to publicly say thanks to Duncan Capicchiano for his great program.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Micheal Wright

National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations November 7, 2019 Fall Meeting (Day 1)
Meeting Agenda and Presentation Files:
The National Advisory Committee (NAC) considers topics such as hard to reach populations, race and ethnicity, language, aging populations, American Indian and Alaska Native tribal considerations, new immigrant populations, populations affected by natural disasters, highly mobile and migrant populations, complex households, rural populations, and population segments with limited access to technology. The Committee also advises on data privacy and confidentiality, among other issues.
In 2012, the Secretary of Commerce re-chartered the NAC as the Census Bureau National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations. The committee, known as NAC, consists of up to 32 members appointed by the Director of the Census Bureau.
NAC is an important channel of communication between the Census Bureau and race, ethnic, and other communities, focusing “on the identification of new strategies for improved census operations, survey and data collection methods, including identifying cost-efficient ways to increase census participation” and reduce the undercount.

UCL Lunch Hour Lecture: Tick tock of the biological clock - Professor Joyce Harper
Globally, women are increasingly delaying the birth of their first child, as they lead very different lives to their mothers. But a woman’s fertility declines with age, significantly so by the mid-30s. Professor Harper is working on an arts project to increase fertility awareness and studying social egg freezing, which may help some women delay fertility.
