Fatehpur Sikri - magnificent fortified city 40 km west of Agra was the short-lived capital of the Mughal empire between 1572 and 1585, during the reign of Emperor Akbar. The Palace buildings lie beside the Jama Masjid mosquewhich contains elements of Persian and Indian design. The main entrance to the mosque is via 54m high Victory Gate and inside is the white marble tomb of Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, where women hoping to have children come to tie thread to the jalis (carved lattice screens). The Palace complex is massive and include several pavilions and palaces dotted with courtyards, gardens, servants quarters and ornamental pools. The servant house (Lower Haramsara) once housed more than 200 female servants!
