Johns Hopkins Glacier is a 12-mile (19 km) long glacier located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the U.S. state of Alaska. It begins on the east slopes of Lituya Mountain and Mount Salisbury, and trends east to the head of Johns Hopkins Inlet, 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of the terminus of Clark Glacier and 79 miles (127 km) northwest of Hoonah. It was named after Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1893 by Harry Fielding Reid.[1] It is one of the few advancing tidewater glaciers of the Fairweather Range.[2] Access to the face of the glacier is limited to the Johns Hopkins Inlet.
Conquering AB Mountain in Alaska
A couple years ago, I had the amazing experience of spending four months in the state of Alaska. It was the most beautiful place that I have ever seen. Skagway, Alaska is my favorite little town ever, and I hope that one day, I can have a summer home there.
I decided to go hiking one day, and the next thing you know, I was vertical, climbing a mountain. I had no food or water, but motivation and dedication to finish what I accidentally started.
I know that this is not what I normally post, but I wanted to share this all with you. Thank you all for watching.
Skagway - from Upper Dewey Lake Devil's Punchbowl
Here is a quick view of Skagway and the Taiya inlet from the pass between Upper Dewey Lake and the Devil's Punchbowl. The huge downtown area of Skagway can be seen as well as the Smugglers Cove and two cruise ships. A great quick view of what you can see hiking to the punchbowl from the Upper Dewey lake. Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil, Harriett Pullen's successes, Aug. 27, 2018
This episode of Alaska Story Time with Aunt Phil shines a light on a female pioneer/entrepreneur who carved out a successful life for herself after arriving in Skagway, Alaska, during the Klondike Gold Rush era. This segment first aired on Anchorage CBS affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak on Aug. 27, 2018.
One woman turned adversity into a thriving business after leaving her home state of Washington during the Klondike Gold Rush era.
Harriet Smith Pullen’s story of going from rags to riches begins after she arrived broke in Skagway on Sept. 8, 1897. Although her husband came with her, their marriage ended in divorce.
Earning $3 a day as a cook, the enterprising 37-year-old opened a tent restaurant to feed Skagway’s hungry stampeeders. She also began baking pies in pie tins made from discarded cans.
Soon Pullen had gained quite a reputation as a pie baker by using the tons of dried apples included in every stampeeder’s outfit to create her pastries. She eventually made enough money to send for her three sons to help with the business, which she moved into a log building.
An experienced horsewoman, Pullen also saw an opportunity to provide the stampeeders with transportation as well as food. She sent for her seven horses, and when they arrived in Skagway, she jumped into a rowboat and guided them to shore because no one else would bring them in.
With grit and courage, along with her care and knowledge of horses, she hired out to pack prospectors and their supplies over the White Pass Trail. Pullen became one of the few women packers on the trail, surviving the rough conditions and the corruption imposed by Soapy Smith and his band of thieves.
Her business was so successful, that when she sold it, she netted a grubstake that funded several future enterprises.
Pullen used some of the profits gleaned from her successful freighting business to rent Capt. Billy Moore’s boarding house, which she later purchased and converted into Alaska’s largest and most elaborate hotel – the Pullen House. Its tables were laden with vegetables grown on land she owned near the old townsite of Dyea, once the major gateway to the Chilkoot Trail, and with milk from her own cows.
Even during tough times, the Pullen House retained its elegance. President Warren G. Harding made it a point to visit the outstanding hotel during his visit to Alaska in 1923.
Pullen promoted tourism in Skagway, which at one time was Alaska’s largest city, and amassed a large enough collection of Alaska artifacts to have her own museum. In her later years, she regaled tourists with tales of the Klondike Gold Rush and the shooting of Soapy Smith, an event she claims to have witnessed.
In 1947, after spending 50 years in her adopted town, the grand lady of the North died at the age of 87. She is buried near the site of her once-vibrant hotel.

ALASKA, day 1,. We found a beautiful lake in Skagway (2018) │ My travel Journal
Alaska is an amazing place to visit, most people think that is going to be super cold but in the high season (between May and September) the weather is actually very pleasant.
Today is our day 1 in Alaska and we are visiting Skagway. We will do the WHITE PASS TRAIN TOUR with its amazing scenarios and sightseens, we will do a TREKKING TO THE DEWEY LAKES, beautiful and one of the few things to do for free here in Skagway, also, we will eat kettle pop corn that is so famous here in these Alaskan ports (don't ask me why), in every Kettle pop corn shop they have a loooot of flavors, you will see.
If you want to do this when you come to Skagway, here are the details:
White pass train tickets:
$125 per person pretty pricy but worth it if you see it at once in a life time experience. tours from outside or the webpage or the ship, the price is the same.
Trekking to the Dewey lakes:
FREE, you just have to get out of the ship, put your hiking shoes and you are ready to go. You will find the trail close to the ships, if you are in front of the ships facing town, the trail is in your right side by the mountains, follow the rails and you will find the path.
Pop corn:
is also pricy but worth it, you are going to find so many flavors, I tried the garlic with chesse pop corn (just for sun) and Iliked it, is really nice to try new things.
I hope you have fun and enjoy every single moment, remember that next week we will put more videos of Alaska and a lot of things to do, don't forget to subscribe and give us a thumbs up.

The Days of 98' Show with Soapy Smith - Skagway, Alaska
The Days of '98 Show
Presented by Goldrush Productions
Created by the people of Skagway, and depicting events taken from actual historical records, The Days of '98 Show with Soapy Smith portrays the last day of this notorious outlaw's life - July 8, l898.
Jefferson Randolph Soapy Smith was born in Georgia in l861 and ventured west as a young man. He learned his trade as a con man during the silver and gold rushes of Colorado and eventually made it to Skagway in the fall of 1897. Skagway at that time was described by Canadian Mountie Sam Steele as a little better than hell on earth! Soapy formed a gang and reigned supreme for nine months. While his men did most of the dirty work, Soapy tried to establish himself as a solid citizen, contributing to the building of Skagway's first church and founding an Adopt a Dog program. When Soapy's gang robbed a man of his gold dust, tempers flared and events culminated in a final showdown. The audience witnesses this historic moment and the conclusion to the story, keeping Skagway's colorful history alive. The Days of '98 Show features can-can dancing, ragtime music and Robert Service poetry.
Visitors can see The Days of 98 Show in the beautifully restored Eagles Hall, located at 6th and Broadway in downtown Skagway. There are up to four shows daily, starting at 10:30. Phone (907) 983-2545 or visit thedaysof98show.com for additional information.
