Top best places to visit in Zagreb, Croatia
Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia.
Zagreb is known locally as Little Vienna because of the mix of cafe-culture, Austria-Hungarian architecture, neo-Gothic cathedrals and medieval old town.
Ban Jelacic Square, named after Croatian military hero, is the central and the largest square of the city.
It is located at the boundaries of the Upper Town... and the Lower Town.
In the Upper Town is the Zagreb Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church and the tallest and the most monumental sacral building in Croatia.
But the Stone Gate is the most significant oath site in town.
Inside the gate is the portrait of Mary with baby Jesus which is said to be sacred, because it is the only thing that survived the great fire in 1731.
Near the Stone Gate is situated St Mark’s Church. One of the oldest structures in Zagreb stands on the square surrounded by the government edifices.
St Catherine Church is another important landmark in the Upper Town, and next to it is the Lotrscak Tower.
From this fortified construction, which dates to the 13th century, is a very nice view of the city.
The core of the center of Lower Town is a U-shaped system of city squares with parks.
The green horseshoe is home to several organizations and museums, such as:
A gallery hosting major city exhibitions, the Art Pavilion.
A notable national collage, the Academy of Sciences and Arts.
A world famous cultural institution, the Archaeological Museum.
Built for passengers of the Orient Express train, the Esplanade Hotel.
The central archival system in the country, the Croatian State Archives.
A place with a great art collection, the Mimara Museum.
The National Theater, a venue for theater, opera and ballet.
The Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Academy of Music.
A good place to go to get bird’s eye view of the city is the Zagreb Eye, an observation deck and a bar.

Zagreb, Croatia in Timelapse
Zagreb, Croatia in timelpase…Zagreb is such a wonderfully charming city! A few days walking around Zagreb after arriving from Serbia was such a welcomed change! You'll likely spend most of your time in Upper and Lower town (Gornji grad and Donji grad) and if you have a chance DO NOT miss the Museum of Broken Relationships, a must see.
Walk around Upper Town City of Zagreb on 13 Jan 2019.
The group was informed that Zagreb at its centre is the site of Gothic twin-spired Cathederal and 13th century St. Mark Church with colourful tiled roof. The group from TravelConnect.sg walked up the hill on pedestrian-friendly Tkalciceva Street. There are shops, museums and parks in the Lower Town of Zegreb.

Zagreb Travel Guide - Croatia Memorable Adventure
Zagreb is a city in Central Croatia and the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is a vibrant city of more than 800K people (metropolitan area: more than 1.1 million). The city boasts a charming medieval 'old city' look with architecture and cobbled streets reminiscent of Vienna, Budapest, Prague and other Central European cities. In 2018 it was visited by about 1.2 million tourists, mainly from South Korea, United States, Germany, China and Italy. Enjoy the free WiFi available at the main square and around the national theatre.
The imposing mountain overlooking Zagreb (Medvednica) contains a preserved fortress (Medvedgrad) and fascinating views of the city. Being respectful in the fort is a good idea, since it is the site of the Altar of the Homeland memorial, dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the Homeland war. There are several historical festivals during the year, including knights tournaments.
Zagreb is split into seventeen administrative divisions called city districts:
Donji grad(Lower town)
Gornji Grad–Medveščak(Upper town–Medveščak)
Trnje
Maksimir
Peščenica – Žitnjak
Novi Zagreb – istok (New Zagreb–East)
Novi Zagreb – zapad (New Zagreb–West)
Trešnjevka – sjever (Trešnjevka–North)
Trešnjevka – jug (Trešnjevka–South)
Črnomerec
Gornja Dubrava (Upper Dubrava)
Donja Dubrava (Lower Dubrava)
Stenjevec
Podsused – Vrapče
Podsljeme
Sesvete
Brezovica
The historical part of the city to the north of Ban Jelačić Square is composed of the Gornji Grad and Kaptol, a medieval urban complex of churches, palaces, museums, galleries and government buildings that are popular with tourists on sightseeing tours. The historic district can be reached on foot, starting from Jelačić Square, the centre of Zagreb, or by a funicular on nearby Tomićeva Street. Each Saturday, (from April till the end of September), on St. Mark's Square in the Upper town, tourists can meet members of the Order of The Silver Dragon (Red Srebrnog Zmaja), who reenact famous historical conflicts between Gradec and Kaptol. It's a great opportunity for all visitors to take photographs of authentic and fully functional historical replicas of medieval armour.
Zagreb's numerous museums reflect the history, art and culture not only of Zagreb and Croatia, but also of Europe and the world.
The Archaeological Museum
Modern Gallery (Croatian: Moderna galerija)
Croatian Natural History Museum (1 Demetrova Street)
Technical Museum (18 Savska Street)
Museum of the City of Zagreb (20 Opatička Street)
Arts and Crafts Museum (10 Republic of Croatia Square)

Zagreb, Croatia with TravelArt - March 2019
Zagreb is made for strolling. Wander through the Upper Town's red-roof and cobblestone glory, peppered with church spires. Crane your neck to see the domes and ornate upper-floor frippery of the Lower Town's mash-up of secessionist, neobaroque and art deco buildings. Search out the grittier pockets of town where ugly-bland concrete walls have been transformed into colourful murals by local street artists. This city rewards those on foot.

Zagreb Funicular, Croatia
Zagreb Funicular, Croatia
The Zagreb Funicular is the funicular in Zagreb, Croatia, The lower station is located on Tomiceva Street, while the other station is located at the base of Lotršcak Tower. It was opened in 1890 after just 2 years from getting the building permit. It is 66 meters long and it is the shortest funicular in the world! The trip is brief – lasting just 64 seconds, but it’s a fun ride and an efficient way to reach the Upper Town. The funicular is equipped with a hydraulic lift platform and an access ramp, so it’s a great option for visitors who can’t climb the stairs. Almost 125 years it has been transporting the citizens of Zagreb and its guests between the Upper and Lower Towns. Initially it had steam engines, which were substituted with electrical engines in 1934. Having in mind that it kept its original shape, constructional and most of the technical properties, it was given legal protection as a monument of culture.
In 1889 D.W. Klein, a contractor from Osijek, presented the idea for Zagreb’s funicular to the city council. Inspired by the funiculars in other European cities, Klein counted passersby climbing the wide, wooden stairs on Bregovita Street (now Tomiceva) to confirm that it was the busiest path between Zagreb’s Upper Town and Lower Town. Klein planned to fund the project, and in return, he was to keep the rights to the funicular for 40 years. His proposal was quickly approved, and the following year, on October 8, 1890, the funicular embarked on her maiden voyage. Today the funicular actually keeps itself pretty busy, it departs every ten minutes, seven days a week, from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. It travels 4,000 kilometers a year and transports 750,000 passengers annually.
