LÖYLY:
The site is unique. Being less than two kilometers away from the city center, it is very central but at the same time the landscape is like in the outer archipelago. The plot is situated in a future coastal park that will be part of a broader “Helsinki park” connecting the capital city to the sea. The building was designed to be slim and elongated so as not to cut the narrow park strip. The volume is kept as low as possible so that it doesn’t block views from the future residential blocks. Instead of building a conventional building, the sauna is developed into an easy-going, faceted construction that is more part of the park than a conventional building. When the wooden building turns gray, it will become more like a rock on the shoreline.
The interior architecture of the restaurant and the sauna lounge is by Joanna Laajisto Creative Studio. The objective of the design was to create an atmospheric restaurant which compliments the strong architecture of the building. The approach could be called soft minimalism. The challenge was to create intimate seating areas in the large hall like space with two walls of windows. People often feel most comfortable sitting their backs against the wall. The solution was to build a raised platform for the bar area which divides the space into two different areas. A wooden half wall anchors the long custom designed sofas which have a great view of the sea.
The main materials used in the interiors are black concrete, light Scandinavian birch wood, blackened steel and wool. All materials are durable and long lasting. The wood used is pressed, glued and slightly heat treated birch, a new sustainable Finnish innovation made of left over materials of the plywood industry that normally is burned to produce energy. This is how waste is turned into a beautiful recycled material. It´s manufacturing process produces a beautiful cool light color tone and heavy durability.
In addition to the long sofas, Laajisto´s office has used the glued laminated birch on walls, tabletops, the long bar and even in the unisex toilet sink. The upholstered chairs, which add softness to the space, are by Italian manufacturer Torre. All fabrics are soft natural wool by Kvadrat. The bar stools are by Gubi and the wooden chairs in the sauna lounge are by Finnish Nikari.
The String lights designed by Micheal Anastassiades for Floss create a subtle rhythm to the space without blocking the views of the Baltic Sea.
The architectural idea is simple: there is a rectangular black box containing the warm spaces that is covered with a free form wooden “cloak”. Instead of being mere decoration, the sculptural structure made of heat treated pine has several functions. It provides people with visual privacy. However, the lamellas don’t limit the sea view from inside it, rather they function like venetian blinds and blocking the views from outside. There are sheltered outside spaces between the warm mass and cloak to cool down in between sauna bathing. The cloak forms intimate terraces between its slopes that serve as a place to sit. The structure protects the building from the harsh coastal climate. It shades the interior spaces with big glass surfaces and helps to reduce the use of energy to cool the building. Moreover, the stepped cloak forms stairs to climb on to the roof and look out terraces on top of the building. The construction forms a big outdoor auditorium for the future marine sports centre’s activities on the sea. There are around 4000 planks that were precisely cut to individual forms by a computer-controlled machine. The big wooden terrace is partly on top of the sea and you can hear the sound of the waves under your feet.

Finland Free / Löyly Sauna
Ok, so this sauna is not free. It's actually one of the coolest saunas in the world, right in front of the (still frozen) ocean. However, you can go to dozen of free saunas around the city and jump right in the water afterwards. I was scared, thinking I'd get a paralyzed face as a souvenir. Or at least have an extremely unpleasant feeling. On the contrary, once your body is really warm from the sauna, you are coated by the heat in a way that feels like you're jumping in a coldish pool during a spring day, not the savagery that is a 90 degree drop in temperature. We ended up repeating this masochistic process 3 times, till we got too relaxed and ready for some food. If you come to Finland, fear the saunas not, and jump straight into the cold water, it's better than I make it seem in the video :-)

EL MEJOR SAUNA DEL MUNDO ESTA EN FINLANDIA
Sauna extremo, Ice swimming.

Finns flock to a free outdoor public sauna
(18 Dec 2016) Several hundred people have already visited the free 'Christmas Sauna' in Helsinki city centre, according to organisers of this annual winter tradition.
The 'Christmas Sauna', located in the city's historic Tori Quarters, has been placed in the courtyard of the City Hall this year.
There is no entrance fee, and lockers as well as changing rooms and a washroom are available for guests.
Going to sauna is part of traditional Finnish culture, as almost every family have a sauna in their home.
More than 1,000 people visited the 'Christmas Sauna' in 2015.
Organisers expect to exceed that number, as numbers of visitors seeking this traditional Finnish experience grow every year.

Christmas signals the start of the sauna season in Finland
(12 Dec 2018) LEADIN:
In Finland Christmas is a time when you relax, eat, drink, be merry with your friends and then retreat to the sauna.
Public saunas are becoming so popular again that they're being introduced to Christmas markets.
STORYLINE:
When you've had enough of the rigors of Christmas shopping, it's time to stop and sweat away the stress.
There are estimated 2 million saunas in Finland, for population of just five and a half million according to the Finnish Sauna Society.
Kari Virtanen has the task of keeping this sauna working efficiently.
He says: When people started building saunas in their own homes, they (public saunas) were not so popular any more. But now they are again coming. People are noticing that in public saunas you probably get better löyly (steam rising from the sauna stove), better feeling, and you can also meet out people and socialise with in those saunas.
Virtanen is operating a continuous fire stove sauna.
It's like a stove which requires a fire to be constantly stoked to heat the rocks.
Virtanen prefers saunas heated by birch tree wood because he believes it gives the optimal amount of heat for its volume.
There are also smoke saunas and electric powered ones.
Mikko Mykkänen has an alcohol distillery at the market.
Today he's come to relax and detox.
He explains: Like yesterday, we had a little Christmas party, so its very nice to go and sweat a bit and then you feel yourself human again. But it's also for relaxation and getting rid of getting your thoughts together and enjoying bad toxins coming out of your body.
According to Mykkänen many Finnish people think the sauna is a good place to do business: Because at sauna you can trust other people. There are no ties, or different clothes, everybody is as he is, a human, and it's very easy to negotiate at sauna.
Whether it's for ritual seasonal cleansing, contemplation in solitude, or making business deals, the Finns use of saunas is diverse.
Some are to be found in urban apartments, some outside summer cottages, some can even be found in old phone booths, or tents.
Christmas Market oragniser Emma Lumme says they're growing in number: It's more popular that ever, it seems like it. And its about, kind a mixing old and new traditions here in Helsinki. We have lots of young people so its, kind of, wise to do that. We like to think that it's like urban retreat where we calm down and have space to breathe.
Not everyone understands the Finnish passion for saunas.
A French visitor Alice says: This is crazy, having a sauna in the Christmas Market. I'm here for a conference, and they were match making, and meetings were also in sauna. It was a sauna village, which is so crazy.
Introducing Alice to the practice of saunas is Matti from Lapland.
She ladles the water onto the stones, but the resulting heat is a little to much for Alice who says: Oh! This is so hot. I'm burning!.
After the heat of the sauna many people run outside for a breath of fresh air.
Often if they're in the countryside, people will take a dip in a frozen lake, or roll around in the snow.
Urban public sauna goers can enjoy cooling off in the Helsinki air, and the occasional smiles of other market visitors.
Although public baths have long history, and could be found in many cultures around the world, the word sauna comes from an ancient Finnish word, referring to bathhouse itself.
It is the only Finish word which is in parlance internationally according to Jarmo Lehtola from the Finish Sauna Society.
