Luxury Mekong River Cruise | Luang Say Cruises
This adventure was made possible by Mekong River Cruises -
Cruising down the Mekong River on a luxury riverboat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang was an amazing experience. This river cruise with Luang Say Cruises easily ranks in my top three experience of the entire trip. The northern Mekong river cruise starts on the Laos border city of Huay Xai. Crossing the border from Chiang Khong to Hauy Xi was extremely easy thanks to Luang Say Cruise's helpful staff that walked us through the entire process!
We boarded our luxury river boat around 9 a.m., and by 9:30 we were cruising down the Mekong River. After cruising down the river for a couple of hours, we were severed an amazing lunch buffet. After lunch we continued down stream until we got to a small village on the bank of the Mekong River. Our boat docked on the shore while we explored the village to learn how the local mountain people live.
After visiting the village our luxury cruise continued down river until we arrived at the Luang Say Lodge. We spent the night in a beautiful bungalow that offered amazing views of the Mekong River. That night we were served an amazing dinner, and the next morning we woke up to awesome views of the misty Mekong River.

Thailand and Laos Trip - Chiang Mai, Luang Prabang, Luang Say Mekong River Cruise - January
We flew into Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, and spent a few days seeing the sights, wandering around and eating everything. From there, we took a bus to Chiang Khong, which is a border town between Thailand and Laos. We crossed the border early the next day, got on a boat, and spent the next 2 days sailing down the Mekong River through Laos. We ended the trip in Luang Prabang, Laos, a really chill UNESCO world heritage city.
This is a montage of some of the things we did, saw and ate.

2 DAY SLOW BOAT LUANG PRABANG LAOS
After arriving in Laos the night before we packed our bags, bought our tickets, and jumped on a packed boat for day 1 of travel on the slow boat to Luang Prabang. After a 6 to 7 hour journey, we arrived in Pakbeng, found cheap accommodations, and left bright and early the next day for day 2 of our slow boat journey. Finally, we ended in Luang Prabang after a short tuk tuk ride from the port.

Cruise on the Mekong in a unique way.
Welcome to Laos and a wonderful travel
on the northern Mekong River.
Our boats travel on the Mekong river from Houei Say to Luang Prabang in Laos, and, in the other direction, from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai.
We offer a very comfortable Mekong cruise, a cultural journey and an opportunity to understand a bit more about life on this legendary river.
Your cruise on the Mekong to the Luang Say Lodge, near the town of Pakbeng, will take about 7 - 8 hours. The one night accommodation is in one of the more comfortable Lodges in the region. From your luxury teak and rosewood bungalow, you can view the dramatic river scenery of the Mekong, enjoying the fiery and romantic sunset and the mysterious and poetic sunrise. It is a pleasure to have dinner in the middle of the mountains of northern Laos.
The second leg of your journey on our boat, from Pakbeng to the ancient royal capital Luang Prabang, a World Heritage site, or to the Thai border. En route, the Mekong river winds its sometimes turbulent way through jungle, mountains, teak plantations and farmland.
Mekong River Sunset Cruise | Luang Prabang, Laos
We arrived enjoyed our slow boat tour to Luang Prabang Laos so much that we wanted to end our stay in the city with a sunset tour along the Mekong. We arrived at the launch point around 5pm to leave for the 2.5 hour cruise and paid approximately $10 per person and included one Laos Mojito. Boy oh boy was that drink one of the nastiest tasting cocktails we’ve ever had. I think they made with locally made Laos Whiskey and it was absolutely foul.
The views were amazing. I always love the vibrant colors of sunset, but the way the colors changed and made the mountains look like they were glowing. We sat and watched as brooding rain clouds inched there way forward over the city. The slow boats will always hold a special place in our hearts and we recommend giving them a try if you ever get the chance.
After the sunset cruise we stopped at one of the riverside restaurants and ordered our last meal in Luang Prabang. It was little bittersweet, but we were ready to move on and conquer our next city.......Vang Vieng

The 2 Day $50 Mekong River Laos Cruise - Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang Slow Boat
I remember reading about the slow boat in Laos. A cruise down the Mekong that took 2 days, finishing in Luang Prabang, a city that one close friend described as a place I could stay forever. I knew it was something I had to do, especially after visiting Northern Thailand, other parts of Laos, and traveling a significant portion of the Mekong River. We started in Chiang Rai, Thailand's largest northern city.
The first step is taking a bus from Chiang Rai's main bus station. To ensure ourselves a spot on the boat, we got the first bus out of town at around 6AM. The bus goes to to Chiang Khong. It was filled with tourists who were looking to do the same thing as us. Normally, the bus stops at the bus station in Chiang Khong, but since everyone was hoping to get to the border the driver said he'd go right to the border for an extra buck each - worth it for not having to haggle with tuk-tuk drivers alone.
Once at the border, we exited Thailand and waited for a shuttle bus to take us across the Friendship bridge to Laos. We went through immigration where you can get a visa on arrival (the cost depends on what country you're from). You'll need a couple passport sized photos and your fee in USD (there was a table doing money exchange if you can't get it ahead of time).
Once we were officially in Laos, we took a tuk-tuk to the Huay Xai pier where we booked our boat tickets and geared up with snacks and beer (turns out the beer for sale on the boat was the same price).
Make sure you get on the boat early to get a good seat. Most of the seats are former car seats and pretty comfy, but a spot away from the back, where the engine is, will be a bit quieter.
After that, it's about 6 hours to Pak Beng. The ride was very pleasant. We watched the hills roll and the occasional village go by. I was surprised how remote it was. Over the course of the 2 days, we didn't see anything big enough to be called a town let alone a city.
In Pak Bang you'll get off the boat and immediately be accosted by people wanting you to stay in their guesthouse. We walked past everyone, took a right at the road, and went into the first place we saw. They had rooms available for 100,000 LAK (about $12). The room was nothing special but it was close to the pier and had a decent bed. A guy checking-in in front of us had booked ahead and paid way more than we did.
After a pleasant sleep, we got up and had some breakfast. The boat left at 9AM, so we went down to the pier around 8AM to get a decent seat. The boat was different (I think the one we took there turns around and goes back to Huay Xai with a load of people doing the same trip in the opposite direction).
The 2nd day offered similar views and lasted about 7 hours - arriving in Luang Prabang at around 4PM. The boat drops you outside of the city, so you'll have to get a tuk-tuk into town. Tickets for that can be bought in the building at the top of the hill.
I really did love this trip. I was a bit worried that it would be uncomfortable or boring, but it was just nice and relaxing. The boat was pretty much all tourists, so you could socialize with people, get a card game going, or just stare across the Mekong and day dream the day away.

The slow boat trip takes two days to get from Luang Prabang to the border town of Huay Xai. Along the way, you spend the night in a river town called Pakbeng. When you arrive in Huay Xai, you may or may not be able to make it to the border in time to cross, so you might need to stay an extra night there. From Huay Xai, you can take a bus to Chiang Rai and other nearby towns.

This is day 2 in Laos, find the previous episode:
In this episode Dwight boards the Luangsay Cruise down the Mekong River in Pak Beng. After a few hours on the boat it stops in a small village called Bor or Baw where you can buy silk scarves from the villages and see how they live. The village is made up of both Lao and Khmu people.
However, the area surrounding the village especially is quite impoverished and the many kids from the surrounding areas come to sell bracelets to tourists. The village also does not offer many other products besides the scarves.
You can try local Lao-lao or rice whiskey, but it was not for sale. In other places in Laos you will see the homemade spirit packaged with snakes and scorpions for tourists hoping to take the novelty items back to their country.
Stay tuned for more episodes!

CHIANG MAI TO LUANG PRABANG VIA SLOW BOAT
In January 2018 I traveled from Chiang Mai Thailand to Luang Prabang Laos via bus and the slow boat down the Mekong River. I heard a lot mixed reviews, some positive some negative, about the trip so I wanted to find out for myself. This is a step by step travel vlog about my experience with helpful information I learned along the way.
