Bratislava Christmas Market
BRATISLAVA CHRISTMAS MARKET - I’ve been completely charmed by Bratislava on my first-ever visit in Slovakia. The Christmas Market in the main square is full of stalls selling delicious foods and drinks so I decided to sample a bunch of traditional Slovak Christmas foods. It was so cold I could see my breath but the twinkle lights were on and made it feel cheery and bright. The surrounding buildings were beautiful and I liked how lights were draped over the fountain as if the water was spraying.
The first food I tried is called Tredlník and the nicest people were making it. It’s a sweet bread that is stretched and rolled and then wrapped around a pole that is turned over the heat until it turns a nice golden brown. Then the outside is covered with sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and walnut. You can get all sorts of different flavours on the outside or even chocolate, whipped cream, or ice cream on the inside. You can even unravel the bread into a spiral which makes it not only delicious to eat, but also fun.
Next up was a savoury food called Lokse which looks like a rolled crepe. They have sweet versions but I wanted something savoury after the sweet tredlník. The traditional Lokse in Bratislava is made with chicken livers but I decided on smoked cheese instead. It tasted like a cheese and potato pierogi in crepe form. Warm cheesy carbs. It hit the spot.
One of the most traditional Slovak Christmas foods you can get is pork or chicken on a bun with fried onions and mustard. That sounded good but I wanted to try a variation so I asked for that with a twist. What I got was smoked sheep’s cheese heated on the grill with onions and cranberry sauce. This cheese tasted a lot more smoked than the Lokse did and I liked the saltiness of the cheese contrasted with the tart sweetness of the cranberry sauce.
I walked by a place selling Bratislavarósky, which is a Slovak food enjoyed all year but especially at Christmas. It’s a curved pastry with a filling of poppy seed or nut - I went for the latter. It looked a bit like a pretzel so I was surprised to find it very dense and heavy feeling. When I bit in it tasted a bit like flaky shortbread.
It was getting colder and I wanted something to wash down all the Slovak Christmas foods so I got a Snow Punch: white wine with rum. Punch - all different kinds - was definitely the most popular thing I found to drink at the Bratislava Christmas Market. It tasted sweet and cozy and warmed my cold hands.
I hope you enjoyed watching this video and going on a culinary tour of the Bratislava Christmas market! Bratislava is a super charming place that I loved visiting: beautiful city, friendly people, and delicious food. MY VLOGMAS 2017 SERIES
This December I’m doing Vlogmas on my channel! Vlogmas is usually where you daily vlog each day of December leading up to Christmas. I’m doing my own version where I’ll upload new videos three times per week on my regular schedule (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and each ‘episode’ will be Christmas themed from my travels in Europe! I’ll be exploring Christmas markets - and trying all the special foods - in 6 different countries and learning about unique and sometimes crazy-sounding Christmas traditions. I absolutely love this time of year. I’m looking forward to experiencing all the different ways people celebrate and sharing it with you.
