Summary:
Following Sparks' substantial success with the ambitious and quirky mid-1970s albums Kimono My House, Propaganda and Indiscreet, all produced while living in England, bandleading brothers Ron and Russell Mael dissolved the group and returned to their home state of California. Recruiting new musicians and producer Rupert Holmes, the brothers set their sights on the United States. The result would be the 1976 album Big Beat, which took a more stripped down approach that relied less on the complex arrangements and soaring falsetto vocals that typified their previous work. Instead, Big Beat explored a simpler harder rocking approach that the Maels hoped would connect with American audiences.
Experience Sparks just as that connection began, shortly after the release of Big Beat, when the group hit the stage of Passaic, New Jersey's Capitol Theater. In addition to showcasing a good portion of the new album material, including Nothing To Do, I Want To Be Like Everybody Else, I Bought The Mississippi River, Everybody's Stupid and Big Boy, Sparks also deliver a choice selection of classic older material.
Revamped for a new lineup of musicians, it is this older material, particularly from the Kimono My House and Propaganda albums that Sparks fans may find most intriguing here. Highlights include a blues-influenced revamp of Equator, high-energy live takes of Something For The Girl With Everything, Amateur Hour, This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us and Talent Is An Asset, plus an encore of Fill-Er-Up. All of this material is performed with a fresh new zeal that showcases the Mael Brothers' undeniable originality, as well as emphasizing the contributions of new recruit guitar slingers Luke Zamperini and Jimmy McAllister.
Lawrence Krauss: Supreme Court, Hobby Lobby, Greece New York
I get the chance to ask Lawrence Krauss a question about significant events in American Politics. I query Krauss for his opinion on the recent SCOTUS rulings for Hobby Lobby and the Greece, New York case.
In short, he thinks that the current SCOTUS is a dilapidated remnant from the Bush Administration and hopes that the next president elected will rectify this mistake.

On Day 10, I finally moved on from Seattle and got a lift from Luke all the way to Portland. We took the scenic route along the coast and had a wild time in the gale force winds created by the typhoon which was rolling through. An unforgettable ride!

The Kindertransport: 80 Years Later
December 5, 2018
Survivor Speakers:
Anita Weissbord, Manfred Korman, Ellen Zilka, and Hannah Deutch
Musical Performance by The Astoria Music Project
Immediately following the violent demonstrations during Kristallnacht, rescue efforts went into effect to bring Jewish child refugees from Nazi Germany, Austria, and Czech lands into Great Britain. The Kindertransport, or Children’s Transport, through the work of many organizations and individuals, saved approximately 10,000 children from an unknown fate. Join the KHC for a special panel discussion with local Holocaust Survivors who were on the Kindertransport as they share their individual experiences before, during, and after the War.
As part of the commemoration, musical interludes based on the theme of “Refugees” will be performed by The Astoria Music Project. The United States has always been a place where individuals and groups have come to seek refuge and the opportunity for a better life. In the first concert of The Astoria Music Project's American Experience season, they explore the music of composers who have made America their home, with emphasis on what it means to leave your homeland behind and start anew.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
The cinema of the United States, often metonymously referred to as Hollywood, has had a profound effect on the film industry in general since the early 20th century. The dominant style of American cinema is classical Hollywood cinema, which developed from 1917 to 1960 and characterizes most films made there to this day. While Frenchmen Auguste and Louis Lumière are generally credited with the birth of modern cinema, American cinema quickly came to be the most dominant force in the industry as it emerged. It produces the largest number of films of any single-language national cinema, with more than 800 English-language films released on average every year. While the national cinemas of the United Kingdom (299), Canada (206), and Australia and New Zealand also produce films in the same language, they are not considered part of the Hollywood system. Hollywood has also been considered a transnational cinema. Classical Hollywood produced multiple language versions of some titles, often in Spanish or French. Contemporary Hollywood offshores production to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Hollywood is the oldest film industry in the world, and is considered the birthplace of various genres of cinema—among them comedy, drama, action, the musical, romance, horror, science fiction and the war epic—having set an example for other national film industries. It produced the world's first sound (talkie) as well as musical film The Jazz Singer. In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge demonstrated the power of photography to capture motion. In 1894, the world's first commercial motion-picture exhibition was given in New York City, using Thomas Edison's kinetoscope. The United States produced the world's first sync-sound musical film, The Jazz Singer, in 1927, and was at the forefront of sound-film development in the following decades. Since the early 20th century, the US film industry has largely been based in and around the 30 Mile Zone in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Director D. W. Griffith was central to the development of a film grammar. Orson Welles's Citizen Kane (1941) is frequently cited in critics' polls as the greatest film of all time. The major film studios of Hollywood are the primary source of the most commercially successful and most ticket selling movies in the world, such as The Birth of a Nation (1915), Gone with the Wind (1939), The Sound of Music (1965), The Godfather (1972), Jaws (1975), Star Wars (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). Moreover, many of Hollywood's highest-grossing movies have generated more box-office revenue and ticket sales outside the United States than films made elsewhere. Today, American film studios collectively generate several hundred movies every year, making the United States one of the most prolific producers of films in the world and a leading pioneer in motion picture engineering and technology.
