Lucayan National Park Trip Ben's Cave part 1
Our 16th anniversary trip to Grand Bahama Island. Visiting Lucayan National Park was the highlight of our vacation. This part shows Ben's Cave. So beautiful and peaceful down there. The water is fed by under ground tunnels to the ocean so that's how fish find their way in.

Gold Rock Beach || Grand Lucaya National Park || Bahamas Vlog
Another PERFECT day on Grand Bahama Island! In this video we visit Grand Lucaya National park, where we hike a trail to see Ben's Cave and Burial Mounds Cave. After we head over to Gold Rock Beach... a gorgeous, deserted, untouched, natural beach which remains shallow during low tide. We had the best day here!

At Lucayan National Park, you will stand shoulder to shoulder with the spirits of the Arawak Indians who occupied this area hundreds of years ago and whose first encounter with the Europeans was believed to be with Christopher Columbus in 1492.
If botany is your pleasure, feel free to walk the many trails in Lucayan National Park and see native Bahamian plants like the Allamanda or the Tararind, a brown fruit often used for cooking among the Carribean cooks. Also in this spectacular 40 acre of native foliage, along those same native trails, you may catch a glimpse of a Bahamian Hutia, a small creature, not unlike a rat, who is native only to the Bahamas.
The park is famous for its caves, above and below ground. Above ground, visitors have reported that even now, bone fragments or pieces of pottery can be found in the caves where the natives once explored. One of the caves, is home to several thousands of bats. Below the surface is over six miles of charted caverns and tunnels, making it the longest underground tunnel system so far discovered in the world.
If you prefer, just relax and enjoy the beaches adjoining Gold Rock Beach. The clear blue waters are beautiful and noting like the beaches found in the United States. The Lucayan National Park is just an hour from Freeport and is accessible via guided tours or on your own. Take a cab, rent a car or a scooter and give yourself plenty of time to explore. You will find the Bahamian people friendly and helpful.

Exploring Owl's Hole, Grand Bahama Island
Leaping into the refreshingly frigid pool. Floating around. Staring up at the brilliant blue sky framed by the limestone walls. Or diving down in search of the cavern's resident shrimp population.
Owl's Hole is hands down the coolest pools you'll ever swim in.

Ben's Cavern Grand Bahama
A few guides have been authorized to take limited numbers of divers into the beautiful Ben's Cavern east of Port Lucaya on Grand Bahama Island.
We went with Sunn Odyssey company. Their great experience taking people into the caverns for decades makes them the ideal guides.
They drive you out and get you set up, then you walk maybe 100 yards along a trail to reach the circular stairway leading down into the sinkhole surrounded by orchids and bromeliads.
Wetsuits are a good idea. The water is around 74 degrees, but warms up some as you hit the halocline where fresh rain water meets the saline sea water.
Observe that sometimes the video gets hazy or wavery as we shoot through the halocline. Otherwise, the water is crystal clear with some amazing visibility. The eye is fooled thinking things are much closer than they really are.
Exploration is in the outer reaches of the very large cave system that's one of the biggest in the Americas.
Note the salt water fish that have adapted to the fresh water.
Thanks to Capt. Brian McLean for some of the wide angle photography.
