1980: Ludlow town, street scenes and the castle
The boys visit Ludlow on the way to the Ironbridge Gorge museums, in the summer of 1980. We stop off at a pub / petrol station on the way to fill up ourselves and the car! Ludlow is full of interesting old buildings, most exciting of which is the castle. The black and white timber framed buildings of the town haven't changed much, but the cars have! Those 70s cars look so dated.

Mali is a Belgian malinois dog who was part of a British military unit deployed to Afghanistan to work alongside NATO troops in 2012. During one operation in Kabul, Mali helped secure a multi-storey building that had been taken over by hostile forces. He conducted searches for explosives while under direct fire. He sustained serious injuries from the attack but had saved many lives. Mali went on to receive the PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals) Dickin Medal in recognition for his bravery – the animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award of the British honours system. The footage includes archive shots of the attack in Kabul as well as Mali at his new home in England.

Medieval Christmas fair || Ludlow Castle
Hello everyone! ~
Quite a short and rather shaky vlog today, sorry! I didn't have time to edit two days for reasons I will explain in an update video later this week. Anyway, Jasper came to visit me, yay! We went to a Medieval Christmas Fayre at Ludlow Castle, which was surprisingly fun and very atmospheric. Did some archery, had some food and a lot of fun!

The Hidden Highway: Ludlow to Hereford:
Our journey along the Hidden Highway continues from Ludlow to Hereford drifting along the unmarked border between Wales and England. Ludlow's fortunes were made on the cloth trade but much of its reputation now comes from its fine Tudor architecture and local cuisine. At Leominster we visited Hampton Court Gardens with its intriguing maze and then on to the Bulmer's Cider Museum at King Offa's distillery. Our last stop was the cathedral city of Hereford situated on the River Wye where its garrison protected the Saxons from Welsh tribes. For more information visit ontopoftheworld.net and check out episode #17 in the Journeys across the British Isles category.

Hidden Treasure: a gold hoard found in a piano
This is the story of a mystery hoard of gold found inside a piano.
Piano tuner Martin Backhouse came across several tightly wrapped fabric bundles while working on an instrument that had been newly donated to Bishop’s Castle Community College in Shropshire. Carefully opening one he discovered stacks of gold sovereigns – precious coins – dating from the turn of the 20th century. Realising the importance of the find, Martin and the college contacted the local Coroner and Finds Liaison Officer to report it under the Treasure Act, which is administered by staff at the British Museum. They could then begin the hunt for the original owner of the coins…
Find out more about the coin hoard here:
With special thanks to Ludlow Museum and Bishop’s Castle Community College.
