Lukang Folk Arts Museum / 鹿港民俗文物館 (Lukang / 鹿港)
The Lukang Folk Arts Museum / 鹿港民俗文物館 is a museum in Lukang Township, Changhua County, Taiwan. The Lukang Folk Arts Museum was established in 1973, with all the buildings, land, furniture, utensils and collector's items having been donated by the Koo family and other private benefactors. The museum holds more than 6,000 articles. The items exhibited in the museum mostly dated from the mid-Ching dynasty to the early years of the Republic. Household, travel, and recreational items, as well as religious implements and celebratory artifacts are displayed for visitors.
The museum has a strong local flavor. The architecture of the museum and the pieces housed within not only demonstrate craftsmanship, but also a thriving history of Lukang.
The museum has the following buildings:
- Yang Building: The Yang Building was built in 1919. The design and materials used in the Meiji styled structure are excellent examples of that time in Taiwan.
- Ku Feng Building: This 18th century wood and brick structure is of a Min-nan (Southern Fukien) style. The building has a traditional feel to it.
The museum houses a collection of Ming and Ching dynasty artifacts: vintage photographs, lacquer ware, porcelain, carved stones, embroidery, musical instruments, and other items. The building is an unusual combination of Asian architecture and Western architecture.

TAIWAN: TAOISM ARTEFACTS EXHIBITION
Mandarin/Nat
Without knowing it, Taoism has become more than a religion to the people of Taiwan, and is now an aspect of their daily life.
It's a locally developed religion which started more than 2-thousand years ago and is deeply rooted in Chinese culture.
The National Museum of History in Taipei opened an exhibition of cultural artefacts of Taoism last Friday.
The 500 piece exhibition shows how Taoism has influenced and shaped today's Taiwanese culture.
Mother Empress was the Goddess of Earth and enjoyed the same status as Mary, Jesus' Mother.
This wood carving of Mother Empress was a symbol of the matriarchal society in ancient China.
It's just one of the works presented at the Taoist artefacts exhibition which opened last Friday at the National Museum of History in Taipei.
This Emperor of Agriculture has been worshipped by Chinese farmers for more than 2-thousand years.
Founded in East Han dynasty by Zhang Tianshi, Taoism is not only a religion.
It's deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and that's reflected in the exhibition of more than 500 pieces.
This three level statue for instance, is not just an artwork...it features the Kitchen God and God of Fortune which govern everyone's daily life and are worshipped by most households.
Taoism is so involved in people's daily life that many have forgotten the real face of it.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
In Taiwan, more than 80 percent of the population are influenced by Taoism. But unfortunately, Taoism has not only become a belief, but a superstition.

Taoists believe in the existence of gods and ghosts, and worship ancestors.
It was that Chinese tradition of worshipping the ancestors which actually resulted in the birth of Taoism.
Unlike Buddhism which forbids ancestor worship, Taoism follows Confucianism, and affords great respect to the dead.
Many natural disasters have hit the island in recent years, and an increasing number of people have resorted to religion to ease their sorrow.
Taoists' complicated worshipping ceremony revolves around making a connection to the deceased, which paves a way for the living to make their beloved live well in the other world.
Burning paper money for the deceased is one form of offering.
Taoism pays great attention to human health as well and for centuries, Taoists have developed methods to keep in shape.
Chinese medicine and Chi Kung are also related to Taoist doctrines.
Taoists also respect Nature.
The Thunder God and his counterpart, the Goddess of lightning, for example, were among many gods that govern Nature and are worshipped throughout China.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
People in Taiwan don't make much effort to protect the environment. But actually, ancient Chinese respects the Nature. And, it is not allowed to hurt the Nature that people live with.

Taoists consider tao as their sublime belief and the norm of nature.
They are commonly invited to perform rituals after years of training.
The exhibition of Taoist artefacts opened last Friday and will last for a month.

Lukang Route-Lukang Station
Lukang Station : The old streets of Lukang mainly refers to the part that covers Putou Street, Yaolin Street, and Dayou Street, while the section from Putou Street to Yaolin Street used to be Lukang’s high street, on whose front and back are long-shaped Fukien-style street-houses. Moving a few steps ahead from there will find you the obsolete Lukang Port, while moving backward you will find the street that had never been exposed to the sunlight in the past. Walking along the old streets, you may feel like falling into the tunnel of time sending you back to Lukang one hundred years before, witnessing its bygone prosperity. Within the proximity, the Mazu Temple is not very large, but its stone statues, wooden carvings, and colored painting are simply gorgeous, thus the artistic works in the temple are reputed as one of the most refined pieces among all the temples around the world. The osmanthus lane does not have any osmanthus flower but an entire row of Japanese architectures. About 5-minute distance from the neighboring Lukang old street is the art village of the osmanthus lane, where various cultural and artistic groups reside every year, offering the residents and visitors with various kinds of cultural events.

Temple Decorations by Chen Shou-yi
Taiwans temple art is supported by an exquisite heritage of craftsmanship. The paintings of gate-gods illustrate how craftsmen have devoted themselves to creating intricate and solemn works. Gate-gods painted for temples have a long history. Qin Shu-pao, Wei Chi-gong, Shen Shu and Yu Lu were all presented as imposing military officers. As people also wanted these deities to bring good fortune In addition to driving away evil spirits, civil officials were later introduced.
In recent years, the old master has spent time lecturing college students about fine arts and cultural heritage preservation in the hope that his art can be passed on to future generations. In helping preserve Taiwans traditional decorative arts, Master Chen has also kept Taiwans cultural and artistic heritage alive.
