Taichung launches renovation of Japanese colonial era complex
Taichung held a ceremony today to officially launch the renovation of an old prison complex dating back 100 years to the Japanese colonial era. The city will spend about $50 million Taiwan dollars to refurbish the Japanese-style living quarters and bath house used by prison officials. It hopes to complete the work by 2018. Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung knocked off a rusted grill covering a vent to symbolize the start of the renovation of this old building.Lin Chia-lungTaichung Mayor(After the renovation is completed), this area will be fully restored, including the Martial Arts Hall to the side, which is already in use. It will be centered around century-old Japanese-style buildings. I think it will be a truly unique site. Taiwan Exhibits the 40 Paintings Depicting the Cruel Persecution in China (With Hebrew Subtitles)
After touring more than 40 countries around the world, the Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance International Art Exhibit is currently showing at one of Taiwans most valued heritage sites. Locals from all walks of life are coming to see and appreciate the renowned exhibition.
The Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance International Art Exhibit opened for public viewing at Longshan Temple in Taiwans Lugang Township on Sunday. Visitors are commenting positively on the exhibit, which includes over 40 realism paintings. Zhou Yixiu is an artist whose works feature in the exhibition. She says that each painting has a moving story behind it.
[Zhou Yixiu, Artist]:
When my students saw this painting, they asked me whether it was a photograph or a painting. After they found out it was a painting they expressed great admiration. It is really a good painting, much more than a photograph. The spirit of this piece is more emotionally stirring than a photo could be.
Local officials have welcomed and helped to promote the exhibit, which they say is beneficial for people to see.
[Chen Yunyong, Chenghua County Cultural Bureau]:
[The exhibit] is good for people's faith. We all think it is worth promoting or advertising. Everyone has come to this world from the heavens and our time here on earth is limited. If we can create or do something meaningful during our short time here in the world then that is a great thing. [This exhibit] is able to improve our understanding of the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance
The exhibit includes over 40 paintings depicting Falun Gong practitioners and their families suffering from persecution by the Chinese communist regime.
[Mr. Shi, Exhibition Visitor]:
From the expression of the child in this painting, the rain, her tears and the message she is holding I can feel her faith, which is facing persecution, and the difficult position she is in.
[Zhang Ruibin, Changhua County Vice Mayor]:
I think the coming of this internationally renowned traditional-style art exhibit to our ancient historic Longshan Temple is very fitting. Thus, I would like to encourage all my fellow Changhua residents to come and experience and appreciate this exhibit if they can at all make the time. It is an artistic feast for the soul which is hard to come by.
Longshan temple is one of the most revered heritage sites in Taiwan. It is Taiwan's best preserved building from the Qing Dynasty and a precious cultural relic.
The Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance International Art Exhibition will be open for public viewing at Longshan temple until the 20th of May.

STORYLINE
Ceremonies have been held in China and Taiwan to mark the birthday of the Chinese philosopher Confucius.
In Beijing on Wednesday, the Chinese government organised a special commemoration event at the 700-year-old Confucius Temple.
Several hundred scholars and officials were invited to a private ceremony involving traditional costumes, ritual offerings and readings of Confucian texts.
A special group of direct descendants of Confucius also attended, including Kong Weizhong, who called the ceremony a landmark.
As descendants of Confucius, we are very proud to be part of this, he said.
As well as a celebration of the philosopher''''s 2,562nd birthday, the ceremony marked the end of a cultural festival aimed at celebrating Confucian culture and ideas.
In recent years, the government has promoted Confucianism as part of China''''s mainstream culture and some schools have included Confucian texts in their curriculum.
Meanwhile, in Taiwan, hundreds of Taiwanese gathered at daybreak on Wednesday to perform an ancient ceremony at Taipei''''s Confucius temple.
The ceremony began with traditional drum rolls, followed by a procession of attendants, musicians and dancers in traditional dress.
The hour-long ritual was attended by Taipei Mayor, Hau Lung-Bin, as well as educators, students and politicians.
The ceremony to honour Confucius can be traced back since his death in 479 BC.
Originally, only relatives of Confucius performed the ceremony, but in 200 AD an emperor from Han dynasty began to attend it and emperors have followed suit ever since.
Confucius - or Kong Zi in Mandarin - created much of the Chinese understanding of a social and political education.
Some historians compare Confucius''''s influence in Chinese history with that of Socrates in the West.

Poll shows support for pension reform in Taiwan
The Taiwan Think Tank has found widespread support for pension reform in a recent poll, with three in four respondents agreeing that the 18 percent interest government employees draw on retirement savings accounts should be phased out. But with a new Legislative session set to begin soon, lawmakers are already asking the National Pension Reform Committee for a detailed bill for them to review. Appearing at a fundraising event last night organized by the Taiwan Nation Alliance, Vice President Chen Chien-jen didn’t forget to mention pension reform. Chen Chien-jenVice PresidentDuring her address at the pension reform conference, President Tsai said that if the pension reform effort succeeded, then any reform effort in Taiwan could succeed. Everybody knows that there have been many debates in the National Pension Reform Committee, but with determination and everybody’s support, we continued on, and now we’re at the point of legislating the reforms. According to a Taiwan Think Tank poll, 67 percent of respondents support pension reform, with 20 percent against. 75 percent back phasing out 18 percent interest on retirement accounts over six years, with only 17 percent opposed.Hsu Yung-mingNPP LegislatorThe 18 percent was the opening salvo of the reforms, and in fact has a certain degree of legitimacy. It’s just a question of whether the six-year phaseout is just right or too slow. The New Power Party thinks the six-year period is too long, and many DPP supporters feel the same way. The poll results suggest strong public support for pension reform, and the issue will likely be a key focus of the Legislature’s upcoming session. Lawmakers are already asking the pension reform committee to submit its version of a pension reform bill or else party caucuses will submit their own bills.

Fire in Taichung, Christmas 2011. 台中聖誕火.
You never know what you will find on Saturday night in Taichung. I was driving down a small country road near the Statue Park and saw this fire burning alongside some small buildings after 9PM on Christmas Eve, 12-24-2011. I honked my horn at the buildings next door till someone came out to call the fire department, then it took close to 15 minutes till the fire department found the little road and yes, I was too late to do my already late Christmas shopping.
