Durdle Door, Dorset is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset, England. Eroded by time and nature, Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks. It is located on the Lulworth Estate in south Dorset part of the Jurassic Coast.
The magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill.
As you look towards the sea, you will see Durdle Door beach on your right. Access to the pebble and shingle beach is on foot via a path and steps over the hill from Lulworth Cove or down from the Car Park (charges apply) which is located on the cliff top at Durdle Door Holiday Park. There is a coach drop-off at the car park, and coach parking is at Lulworth Cove (postcode for Sat Nav is BH20 5RQ).
My journey on the video starts at the Lulworth Cove car park and takes me over the hill on the foot path to Durdle Door. From a distance it doesn't look as steep - but don't be fooled - the climb is steep and can be difficult especially in flip flops! The views are amazing and it's delightful once you reach Durdle Door. An historical place everyone should visit!

Walking the South West Coast Path at Durdle Door offers spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast.
Around 25 million years ago the African tectonic plate collided with the European plate. The huge pressures generated heaved and folded rocks to create the mountain chain we know as the Alps.
Ripples from that collision spread north through the Earth’s crust and gently folded the rocks here, in what would become south Dorset and Purbeck.
Walking the coast path to the east of Durdle Door brings you to the famous Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole. Further afield are the incredible geological formations of Worbarrow Bay and the eerie abandoned village of Tyneham.
To the west are the coastal hamlets of Osmington Mills and Ringstead.
Eroded by time and nature, Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks.
The coastline is of such international geological importance that it was designated England’s first natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001 and is now part of a family of natural wonders including America’s Grand Canyon and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Due to gradient of cliff the steps are steep in places.
Man O' War is a very popular beach of sand and fine pebbles on the east side of Durdle Door beach. The Man O' War and the Door shelter the beaches, providing safe seas for gentle swimming and paddling.
This section of coastline, including Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which starts at Studland in Dorset and ends at Exmouth in Devon.
The final descent to the beach and bay is steep and is not suitable for those with disabilities.
This fantastic section of the South West Coast Path crosses a diverse landscape from the rugged rocks of Portland, to the hustle and bustle of urban life in the seaside resort of Weymouth, followed by quiet rural paths leading to high, undulating chalk cliffs on the way to Lulworth Cove.
Walking becomes progressively harder as you leave Weymouth and set off along the impressive cliffs of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. As you approach Lulworth be sure to look back to the high cliffs of White Nothe and Weymouth Bay and Portland beyond.
This perfect limestone archway is undoubtedly one of the most well known and well photographed points of the entire South West Coast Path.
The beautiful horseshoe bay of Lulworth Cove. Just east of Lulworth is Stair Hole where the sea is washing away the limestone to form a cove in probably the exact same way as it did at Lulworth millions of years ago. From here you can also see the extraordinary folds of rock known as the Lulworth Crumple.
Whether you’re just visiting for the day or staying for a week or longer, you’ll find so many incredible things to do in Dorset, it will make your visit live long in the memory.
Whatever inspires you, we have it covered!
