Lumahai Beach, Kauai Hawaii
This beach was made famous by the movie South Pacific where Mitzi Gaynor washed that man right out of her hair! Lava rocks scattered along the mouth of the beach create a waterfall effects as the surf breaks and recedes over the rugged terrain. The beach itself is a long, wide crescent of sandy, picture-postcard-perfect. The swimming, however, is another story. Strong currents, fierce waves, and unbelievable backwash make the water here unsafe almost all the time. The Lumahai' Stream, on the left, is sometimes cut off from the ocean during the summer due to large deposits of sand. In this case, cooling off in the fresh water of the stream is an option. A rock outcropping separates Lumaha'i from Kahalahala Beach, a mere naming technicality.
Located off of Hawaii Route 560 between Hanalei and Ha'ena State Park, Lumahai is considered a highly picturesque area and attracts many visitors.
There are no facilities at the beach.

Best Stationary Constant Wave Lumahai Beach, Kauai, Hawaii
These local Hawaiians happened to be making a stationary wave while I was enjoying my vacation at the beautiful beach in Lumahai Beach in Kauai, Hawaii . They really know how to utilize their resources! I hope to be back soon to this beautiful island soon! The video starts kinda slow but in the middle to the end these guys get the best of this river! Mahalo!
Giant Wave Crash Lumaha'i Beach in Kauai, Hawaii
Giant waves, spurred on by El Niño, crashed into the northern shore of Kauai today. No one was hurt in this scene but many cameras and phones were lost to the Pacific Ocean. Spectators (further inland) were knocked over by powerful knee high currents and fumbled their belongings into the receding waters. Jukin Media Verified (Original)

International buzz surrounding Kauai's chickens
Call it much a do about local chickens. The New York Times got a whiff earlier this year and this past week a French film crew blew into town to take a closer look at Kauai's chickens. Subscribe to KITV on YouTube now for more:

Kauai, Hawaii 2010
Another great trip to Kauai and another batch of photos to sort through. Here are a few of my favorites. All photos taken with a Nikon D80. The ocean sound FX were recorded by me from a location near Anini Beach on the north side of the island. Photo locations included Polihali State Beach, Waimea Pier, Poipu Beach, Kapaa, Hanalei Bay, Ke'e Beach and a few other places. While in Kauai I stayed at a fantastic Ocean front condo in Kapaa. If you are planning a trip to I highly recommend checking out A great place with an incredit ocean view, centrally located and super reasonably priced. Great people to work with too!
