TSAVO SUPER BRIDGE
The memories of the man-eaters of Tsavo River Bridge Construction that left dozens of Rail workers dead are still lingering 117 years down the line. It is a history that has been passed to generation after generation in Voi and that has prompted stiff security measures at the bridge spanning the Tsavo national park. Still, it has Tsavo super bridge feature prominently despite coming way 3rd at a distance 1.986 kilometers in terms of length.

Tsavo West National Park
In March 1898 the construction of the Mombasa to Kampala railway reached the Tsavo River. For several months, two man-eating lions reined terror on the 3000-man labour force of Indian and African workers at Tsavo River until December 1989 when Colonel Patterson killed the two lions. In February 2013, we went to Tsavo West National Park to learn more about the history of the legendary man-eating lions and explore the second-largest park in Kenya.

Over 2,000 men died in the course of constructing the railway from Mombasa to Kisumu between 1896 and 1901. But their deaths were not in vain. Because of their sacrifice, tourists started flocking this country to see, among others things, the man-eating lions of Tsavo.

Tsavo Man-Eaters - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Tsavo Man-Eaters were a pair of notorious man-eating Tsavo lions responsible for the deaths of a number of construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway from March through December 1898.
In March 1898 the British started building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River in Kenya. The project was led by Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson. During the next nine months of construction, two maneless male Tsavo lions stalked the campsite, dragging Indian workers from their tents at night and devouring them. Crews tried to scare off the lions and built campfires and bomas, or thorn fences, around their camp for protection to keep the man-eaters out, to no avail; the lions leaped over or crawled through the thorn fences. After the new attacks, hundreds of workers fled from Tsavo, halting construction on the bridge. Patterson set traps and tried several times to ambush the lions at night from a tree. After repeated unsuccessful endeavours, he shot the first lion on 9 December 1898. Twenty days later, the second lion was found and killed. The first lion killed measured nine feet, eight inches from nose to tip of tail. It took eight men to carry the carcass back to camp. The construction crew returned and completed the bridge in February 1899. The exact number of people killed by the lions is unclear. Patterson gave several figures, overall claiming that there were 135 victims.
Patterson writes in his account that he wounded the first lion with one bullet from a Martini–Enfield chambered in .303 calibre. This shot struck the lion in its back leg, but it escaped. Later, it returned at night and began stalking Patterson as he tried to hunt it. He shot it through the shoulder, penetrating its heart with a .303 Lee–Enfield, and found it lying dead the next morning not far from his platform. The second lion was shot at most nine times, five with a .303 Lee–Enfield, three with a Martini–Henry carbine, and once with an unidentified rifle.

#1.5 Lumo: Community conservancy in Tsavo
The second stop on our train journey is Lumo, located at the bottom of the Taita Hills (which we explored in the previous episode) at the awesome Lion's Bluff lodge. Because Lumo is a community conservancy, the rules here are more flexible than in national parks. Also, the income generated from tourism is put back in the community: this means sustainable safaris! From bush walks to night safaris, there is no shortage of adventurous activities here.

The Railway in East Africa began as Uganda Railways, dating back to as early as 1896 when the first railway line was laid down in Mombasa. Undertaken by the British Colonial government, the intention was to get the railway line to landlocked Uganda. During construction of a railroad bridge across river Tsavo in what would become Kenya. It is most widely known for the activities of a pair of lions, 135 people were killed by the man-eaters in less than a year before Colonel John Henry Patterson managed to kill them. Read his book called, The Man-eaters of Tsavo published in 1907.

Bollore fills the SGR cargo train with 108 TEUS to ferry to Nairobi
There is still space for trucks to transport cargo from Mombasa inland despite the coming on board of the train services on the Standard Gauge Railway.
This is according to Jean Pascal Naud, the Managing Director of Bollore who says his firm has convinced importers moving cargo through the firm to use the rail option.

Chapter 2: Northern Conservancies: how to go on a sustainable safari
Get ready, the second chapter of Africa Inside Out has kicked off!!! After taking the train in Chapter 1, we left of to the north of Kenya to explore the northern conservancies. From private to community conservancies, from the savannah to sacred mountains.
