Calgary Theatre in Flux: a forum about our future
On September 9, 2018, Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre presented Calgary Theatre in Flux: a forum about our future.
The seed for this event was planted when Charles Netto, our co-founder, stepped away from Swallow-a-Bicycle after a wild and wonderful decade. We got some funding from the Rozsa Foundation to support us through the leadership transition and – since a bunch of other Calgary arts organizations were also undergoing transitions – we figured we would host a public event about succession planning in the arts.
Then, Calgary’s theatre scene exploded.
Or, at least, that’s how it felt. The Calgary International Children’s Festival abruptly shut down, another blow that amplified the recent losses of Mount Royal University’s theatre arts diploma and Y Stage. Swerve magazine became the latest victim of the ongoing crisis in publishing and journalism, eliminating another cultural outlet in a city that already lost FFWD Weekly; where the roster of professional theatre reviewers has been whittled down; and where local television and radio have been on a slow decline for years. Challenging situations at Theatre Junction GRAND and Alberta Theatre Projects hit the (remaining) news outlets and played out over social media.
Meanwhile, some diligent number crunchers worked out that Calgary’s municipal arts funding and the Canada Council for the Arts’ funding to Alberta are both among the lowest per capita in the country – a fact that was underlined when corporate sponsorship dried up after the 2015 recession. A Calgary Arts Development survey showed that only 14% of people working in our professional arts sector identify as visible minorities, compared to 36% of all Calgarians, a 22% gap in representation. Revelations out of the #metoo movement left community members raw, reeling and vulnerable.
Suddenly, a forum on succession planning – while still important – felt utterly insufficient. Tonight’s event, instead, is an attempt to step back, zoom out, look at our current situation, at how we got here, and at our possible futures.
The forum included:
- THE NUMBERS: Emiko Muraki (until recently the Director of Community Investment & Impact at Calgary Arts Development) presented demographic data around arts workers in Calgary's theatre scene.
- CALGARY THEATRE IN CONTEXT: A panel of longtime, trailblazing members of Calgary's theatre communities painted a picture of the local scene as it developed from the 1960s onward. The panel included Duval Lang, Valerie Planche and Sharon Pollock, facilitated by Jocelyn Phu.
- LOOKING AHEAD: A panel of artists and arts workers who are blazing new trails today, and working to re-shape the theatre sector in the years and decades to come. The panel included Stafford Arima, Justin Many Fingers and Jenna Rodgers, facilitated by Mark Hopkins.
- CALLS TO ACTION: Some concrete requests and ideas that we can collectively move forward.
Also, attendees received copies of a special-edition zine (yes! a zine!) featuring thoughts about the future of Calgary's theatre scene from exciting local artists, ages 25 and younger, including:
- Sleman Aldib
- Maya Green
- Samantha Ketsa & Emily Sunderland
- Yousuf Liepert
- Arash Minhas & Noah Baker
- Jay Northcott
- Mikenzie Page
- Kodie Rollan
- Sarah Uwadiae
- Matthew Oliver van Diepen
- Marshall Vielle
They each responded to one or several of the following questions:
• If you have your way, what will Calgary’s theatre landscape look like in 2025? In 2050? In 2100?
• What is one thing that you wish the current leadership of Calgary’s theatre companies knew, understood and acted upon?
• What hopes do you have for your own artistic career?
This event was supported by the Rozsa Foundation and Assembly (Chromatic Theatre, Lunchbox Theatre, Shakespeare Company & Vertigo Theatre). It took place in The Studio at Vertigo Theatre on Sunday, September 9, 2018. Video by Martina Pavlouskova of Hidden Story Productions.
