A Journey to Lundy Island
Only 12 miles from the English coast, Lundy Island is a surprisingly remote and tranquil place. This film was taken in early September.

The Island was originally a gift from the Conqueror to de Marisco, who built the castle in A.D. 1150. L/S of the castle. Closer view of the ruins. The 'King's' House - L/S of a large house. A relic of pirate days is the old French cannon. C/U of a man cleaning (?) the cannon. Lundy has one village and a population of 16. L/S of a man herding a flock of ducks or geese in front of the village church. L/S of the inhabitants of the island. They all stand together, adults and children and a dog. The island has its own coinage which is called Puffins. C/U of the coins. C/U of the coins held in an open hand. Other inhabitants are shown - goats. Lundy's bright spot is the tavern as there are no laws about opening hours here. L/S of the Marisco Tavern and General Stores with half a dozen men standing outside. Lundy has been managed by the Landmark Trust since 1969, but this film looks at its time under the ownership of the Harman family from 1924 to 1968. Bideford is a historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge in north Devon, south-west England. Bideford is the main town of the Torridge local government district. Bideford is served by the A39 Atlantic Highway and A386 roads.
A ferry operates between Bideford quay and Lundy Island, which lies about 22 miles (35 km) away in the Bristol Channel. The same ship, the MS Oldenburg, also provides evening cruises from Bideford along the River Torridge but in the downstream direction only as it is too big to pass under the Bideford Long Bridge.
The Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway was an unusual and short-lived railway built entirely on this peninsula with no direct connection to the rest of the British railway network. The locomotives were fitted with skirts to protect pedestrians, as at one point the line ran along the quay at Bideford.
Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel. It lies 12 miles (19 km) off the coast of Devon, England, in the district of Torridge, about a third of the distance across the channel from Devon, England to South Wales. Lundy gives its name to a British sea area and is one of the islands of England. Lundy has been designated by Natural England as national character area 159, one of England's natural regions. Lundy was granted to the Knights Templar by Henry II in 1160. The Templars were a major international maritime force at this time, with interests in North Devon, and almost certainly an important port at Bideford or on the River Taw in Barnstaple.
The town of Bideford has grown to cover land on both sides of the River Torridge; the area located east of the river is known as East-the-Water, also known as Shamwickshire to locals. Much of the land that has been built on in recent years is drained marshland.

The village of Hartland, whose parish incorporates the hamlet of Stoke to the west and the village of Meddon in the south, is the most north-westerly settlement in the county of Devon, England.
Now a large village which acts as a centre for a rural neighbourhood and has minor tourist traffic, until Tudor times Hartland was an important port. It lies close to the promontory of Hartland Point, where the coast of Devon turns from facing north into the Bristol Channel to face west into the Atlantic Ocean. There is an important lighthouse on the point. The town's harbour, Hartland Quay, is to the south of the point: the quay was originally built in the late 16th century but was swept away in 1887. The high tower of the Church of Saint Nectan in Stoke remains a significant landmark for ships in the Bristol Channel.
Hartland is a convenient centre for walking parts of the South West Coast Path, and the wild coastal scenery around the point is some of the most dramatic on the path, with views across to Lundy Island. From Hartland Point, the Lundy Company operates its helicopter service to Lundy between November and March. The 319 bus service, a council-supported infrequent route operated by Stagecoach Devon, runs from Barnstaple to Hartland and return. There is also a 519 service which runs to Bude.
The town was in the past known as Harton and was an unreformed borough, finally abolished in 1886. In medieval times there was an important abbey at Hartland, where the shrine of St Nectan was venerated. Hartland Abbey and the parish church are located some two miles away in Stoke. Hartland Abbey was built in 1157 and consecrated by Bartholomew Iscanus in 1160.
Saint Nectan, sometimes styled Saint Nectan of Hartland, was a 5th-century Celtic holy man who lived in Stoke. The Anglican church is St Nectan's Church, Stoke, Hartland. The Roman Catholic Church (Our Lady and St Nectan's Church, Hartland) was opened in 1964: it was also dedicated to St Nectan. The building was closed in 2010 due to unavailability of a priest to celebrate mass there, and was demolished in 2012.
The Parish Church of St Nectan has the highest tower in Devon (128 ft), built in the late Perpendicular style. The church is large (137 ft long) and was built in the mid 14th century. Notable features include the fine Norman font, the rood screen (the finest in north Devon) and the old wagon roofs. The monuments include an elaborate medieval tomb-chest, a small brass of 1610 and a metal-inlaid lid of a churchyard tomb of 1618.
