Mr Mu Dehua, or Moon, describes what happened when local Lushan Communist Officials heard the story for the first time of the Americans who forced from Lushan by the invading Japanese army, on Christmas Day 1937. Fleeing down the mountain from the Kuling resort town, they ran with only what they could carry on their back.
Most never returned to China, although the call to come back home to Lushan never died in their imagination.
Some stayed behind to help their Chinese friends battle the Japanese even though they too were in danger. The brotherhood (Mr. Moon called it our Brothership) that was created between both cultures has never been forgotten. The memory of the deep affections of Americans for their Chinese friends and for the beauty of Mt. Lu lives on in the blood of the next generations.
Local Lushan officials had never heard the words spoken before, and they were moved. They came up to Moon and congratulated him for all the work he had done to restore the history and develop the new American relationship.
Two days later, the American group, Kuling American School Association (KASA,) went to Nanjing and signed an agreement with Nanjing University and the Mt Lu Government to create the new Mt. Lushan International Language and Culture Institute. This new East/West Institute is the result of the Americans long term spiritual connection to the Mt. Lu, their true home in China, the place where their childhood memories still lie in the waterfalls (Three Step Falls) and swimming holes, (aptly named Black Dragon Pool)
The Lushan Institute has created a bridge that restores the American spiritual connection broken off for 70 years ago by WW II and provides a venue for furthering the dialog and understanding between people of America, China and the International community.
