Next day, at sunrise, a long bus ride, almost to the border of Portugal and we are in a large Roman city in Lusitania with one of the best preserved Roman theaters.
But what sets Merida apart is how it cares for its history. Walking into the city’s Roman history museum we are transported in time. The architect truly captures the feeling.
And here is a temple of Diana, which apparently got preserved because a rich man built his house into it.
Merida also has the longest Roman bridge standing. It is still being used as a pedestrian bridge.

Spain 2: Merida
The video documents a family trip to the Roman city of Merida, in Spain. The city is one of the most preserved Roman cities around the world. It has a circus, theatre, amphitheatre, a Roman bridge, and many other interesting ruins.
The town was founded in 25 BC, with the name of Emerita Augusta (meaning the veterans – discharged soldiers – of the army of Augustus, who founded the city; the name Mérida is an evolution of this) by order of Emperor Augustus, to protect a pass and a bridge over the Guadiana river. The city became the capital of Lusitania province, and one of the most important cities in the Roman empire. Mérida preserves more important ancient Roman monuments than any other city in Spain, including a triumphal arch of the age of Trajan.
The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993.

The Roman Theatre of Mérida is a construction promoted by the consul Vipsanius Agrippa in the Roman city of Emerita Augusta, capital of Lusitania. Roman Theatre of Mérida was constructed in the years 16 to 15 BCE.
Roman Theatre of Mérida has undergone several renovations, notably at the end of the 1st century or early 2nd century CE (possibly during the reign of Emperor Trajan), when the current facade of the scaenae frons was erected, and another in the time of Constantine I (between 330 and 340) which introduced new decorative-architectural elements and a walkway around the monument. Following the theatre's abandonment in Late Antiquity, it was slowly covered with earth, with only the upper tiers of seats (summa cavea) remaining visible. In local folklore the site was referred to as The Seven Chairs, where, according to tradition, several Moorish kings sat to decide the fate of the city.
The Roman Theatre of Mérida is located in the archaeological ensemble of Mérida, one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain. The Roman Theatre of Mérida was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. The theatre was located on the edge of the Roman city adjacent the city walls. Some of the seating was built into a hill called the Cerro de San Albin. ola
Besides being the most visited monument in the city, it has been home to the development of the Festival de Mérida (Festival of Classical Theatre of Mérida) since 1933. The Mérida Classical Theatre Festival is the oldest of its kind celebrated in Spain.
