EGYPT: Luxor Temple
Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city today known as Luxor (ancient Thebes). It was constructed approximately 1400 BCE.
Unlike the other temples in Luxor, Luxor temple is not dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the king in death. Instead Luxor temple is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship; it may have been where many of the kings of Egypt were crowned.
To the rear of the temple are chapels built by Amenhotep III of the 18th Dynasty, and Alexander. Other parts of the temple were built by Tutankhamun and Ramesses II. During the Roman era, the temple and its surroundings were a legionary fortress and the home of the Roman government in the area. During the Roman period a chapel inside the Luxor Temple originally dedicated to goddess Mut was transformed in to a Tetrarchy cult chapel and later in to a church.
Luxor temple was built with sandstone. This sandstone from the Gebel el-Silsila region, which is located in South-Western Egypt, is referred to as Nubian Sandstone. This sandstone was used for the construction for monuments in Upper Egypt as well as in the course of past and current restoration works.
The Avenue of Sphinxes that links the Luxor and Karnak temples is being restored.
The Mosque of Abu Haggag stands atop the ruins of Luxor Temple, just inside the entrance.

LUXOR TEMPLE & VALLEY OF THE KINGS | Egypt Travel Vlog
We only had one day to explore Luxor, Egypt, so even though we barely slept on the overnight train from Cairo, we went out at 7:00 A.M. to be the first and only tourists at the incredible Luxor Temple! It was totally worth it because it wasn't too hot yet and we took all the videos and photos we wanted with NO other people! Once the first tour bus arrived, we headed back to our hotel and had breakfast (AND COFFEE), but then decided to nap for few hours to wait out the mid day heat before heading to the Valley of the Kings via a $0.10 ferry and $7 taxi. Once again, we felt like there should have been way more tourists than there was, but we weren't complaining!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

ExploreTube | Luxor Temple Travel Vlog
Largely built by the New Kingdom pharaohs Amenhotep III (1390–1352 BC) and Ramses II (1279–1213 BC), this temple is a strikingly graceful monument in the heart of the modern town. Also known as the Southern Sanctuary, its main function was during the annual Opet celebrations, when the statues of Amun, Mut and Khonsu were brought from Karnak, along the Avenue of Sphinxes, and reunited here during the inundation.
Amenhotep III greatly enlarged an older shrine built by Hatshepsut, and rededicated the massive temple as Amun’s southern ipet (harem), the private quarters of the god. The structure was further added to by Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Alexander the Great and various Romans. The Romans constructed a military fort around the temple that the Arabs later called Al Uqsur (The Fortifications), which was later corrupted to give modern Luxor its name.
In ancient times the temple would have been surrounded by a warren of mud-brick houses, shops and workshops, which now lie under the modern town, but after the decline of the city people moved into the – by then – partly covered temple complex and built their city within it. In the 14th century, a mosque was built in one of the interior courts for the local sheikh (holy man) Abu Al Haggag. Excavation works, begun in 1885, have cleared away the village and debris of centuries to uncover what can be seen of the temple today, but the mosque remains and has been restored after a fire.
The temple is less complex than Karnak, but here again you walk back in time the deeper you go into it. In front of the temple is the beginning of the Avenue of Sphinxes that ran all the way to the temples at Karnak 3km to the north, and is now almost entirely excavated.
The massive 24m-high first pylon was raised by Ramses II and decorated with reliefs of his military exploits, including the Battle of Kadesh. The pylon was originally fronted by six colossal statues of Ramses II, four seated and two standing, but only two of the seated figures and one standing remain. Of the original pair of pink-granite obelisks that stood here, one remains while the other stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Beyond lies the Great Court of Ramses II, surrounded by a double row of columns with lotus-bud capitals, the walls of which are decorated with scenes of the pharaoh making offerings to the gods. On the south (rear) wall is a procession of 17 sons of Ramses II with their names and titles. In the northwestern corner of the court is the earlier triple-barque shrine built by Hatshepsut and usurped by her stepson Tuthmosis III for Amun, Mut and Khonsu. Over the southeastern side hangs the 14th-century Mosque of Abu Al Haggag, dedicated to a local sheikh, entered from Sharia Maabad Al Karnak, outside the temple precinct.
Beyond the court is the older, splendid Colonnade of Amenhotep III, built as the grand entrance to the Temple of Amun of the Opet. The walls behind the elegant open papyrus columns were decorated during the reign of the young pharaoh Tutankhamun and celebrate the return to Theban orthodoxy following the wayward reign of the previous pharaoh, Akhenaten. The Opet Festival is depicted in lively detail, with the pharaoh, nobility and common people joining the triumphal procession. Look out for the drummers and acrobats doing backbends.
South of the Colonnade is the Sun Court of Amenhotep III, once enclosed on three sides by double rows of towering papyrus-bundle columns, the best preserved of which, with their architraves extant, are those on the eastern and western sides. In 1989 workmen found a cache of 26 statues here, buried by priests in Roman times, now displayed in the Luxor Museum.
Beyond lies the Hypostyle Hall, the first room of the original Opet temple, with four rows of eight columns each, leading to the temple’s main rooms. The central chamber on the axis south of the Hypostyle Hall was the cult sanctuary of Amun, stuccoed over by the Romans in the 3rd century AD and painted with scenes of Roman officials: some of this is still intact and vivid. Through this chamber, either side of which are chapels dedicated to Mut and Khonsu, is the four-columned antechamber where offerings were made to Amun. Immediately behind the chamber is the Barque Shrine of Amun, rebuilt by Alexander the Great, with reliefs portraying him as an Egyptian pharaoh.
To the east a doorway leads into two rooms. The first is Amenhotep III’s 'birth room' with scenes of his symbolic divine birth. You can see the moment of his conception, when the fingers of the god touch those of the queen and ‘his dew filled her body’, according to the accompanying hieroglyphic caption. The Sanctuary of Amenhotep III is the last chamber; it still has the remains of the stone base on which Amun’s statue stood, and although it was once the most sacred part of the temple, the busy street that now runs directly behind it makes it less atmospheric.

Luxor, Egypt - World's Greatest Open Air Museum by the Nile
Luxor, Egypt - The city on the east bank of the Nile River that is rich with lots of historical tombs, museums, monuments, and temples that made it the world's greatest open air museum. Luxor is the place where the kings and queens of old Egypt were crowned.
Luxor, Egypt, is the city that tourists visit for two different reasons: first of all it is filled with lots of historical museums and temples which people get astonished by. Second, being placed by the Nile River give this city a different look and atmosphere, one that make people happy with the view which they might as well receive from their hotel rooms.
There are several things we have seen in this city, the one that is really considered an open air museum because every single direction one tends to look in, there is something to be spotted. The ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand in the middle of the modern city, which was the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes.
On the opposite side across the Nile River, there are the monuments, temples, and tombs of the west bank Necropolis, which include the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut is one of the most famous landmarks of Luxor that tourists from all over the world come to see.
The west bank of Luxor has always been the main area for cemeteries and mortuary temples, and this is a role that has not been changed till these days. Luxor Temple is one of the sites that is also considered different since this ancient Egyptian complex is a place where people get to walk in between those long pillars and just think about how the Pharaohs managed to build them; this place is where many of the kings of Egypt where crowned.
Among the different sites which one will have to visit in Luxor, Egypt, Karnak Temple is on the list and it is considered a vast open air museum and the second ancient religious in the world, making Luxor a place that stands on top due to the different ancient historical treasures that it carries.
Generally speaking, there are several things one should see in Luxor and which are divided between the west bank and the east bank. In the West Bank, there is the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Madinet Habu (memorial temple of Ramses III), the Ramseseum (memorial temple of Ramses II), Tombs of the Nobles, Deir Al-Bahri which is the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, Malkata (palace of Amenophis III) as well as Colossi of Memnon (memorial temple of Amenophis III).
On the other side, those attractions found on the east bank include Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, Luxor Museum, and the Mummification Museum.
For those who plan to travel to Luxor, Egypt, they always include Aswan in this plan because they are next to one another and they could even book a room in a Nile Cruise that will take them through Luxor and Aswan and show them the historical landmarks during the trip by stopping at these spots and letting the tourists come down and enjoy the place - they could even book the whole thing with a tour guide.
Getting the chance to see the different monuments, temples, and museums is the number one reason behind heading to Luxor, Egypt, but some people plan to make this trip extraordinary with doing any of the activities which they might not get the chance to do anywhere else, such as riding the air balloon or else riding a horse carriage. In Aswan, make sure to go and enjoy the Nubian life if you have the time to, because the colors of the place will make you feel like you want to stay there forever.
Egypt is one of the countries that is stuffed with lots of historical places for the tourists to visit and come across but most of those who choose Egypt as their destination tend to start with Cairo, so if your trip is going to start there, you have to know that a train to Luxor will take about 12 hours and is considered very tiring, so you could better book a plane ticket. In addition to that, the weather in Egypt is usually hot in summer but when it comes to Luxor and Aswan, this hotness is doubled, so it is better to come in winter or the first days of spring.
This was our experience in Luxor, Egypt, so tell us how was yours if you have been there? Since we want our trips to Egypt to be different, we think that checking Al Fayoum ( or heading to Alexandria ( should be our next plans, or we could even surf the internet and search for the other cities or places in Egypt which are known with famous landmarks or activities which we might be able to visit.
At Connolly Cove channel, you will be able to receive several recommendations and suggestions for the places to visit in the countries you are planning to travel to. We are mainly focused on Ireland and Northern Ireland but lately we decided to expand to other countries that we even managed to reach Egypt eventually and see it differently, and here we are in Luxor this time.

From Wikipedia:
Luxor Temple (Arabic: معبد الاقصر) is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city today known as Luxor (ancient Thebes) and was constructed approximately 1400 BCE. In the Egyptian language it is known as ipet resyt, the southern sanctuary. In Luxor there are several great temples on the east and west banks. Four of the major mortuary temples visited by early travelers and tourists include the Temple of Seti I at Gurnah, the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahri, the Temple of Ramesses II (a.k.a. Ramesseum), and the Temple of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu; the two primary cults temples on the east bank are known as the Karnak and Luxor.[1] Unlike the other temples in Thebes, Luxor temple is not dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the pharaoh in death. Instead Luxor temple is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship; it may have been where many of the pharaohs of Egypt were crowned in reality or conceptually (as in the case of Alexander the Great who claimed he was crowned at Luxor but may never have traveled south of Memphis, near modern Cairo.)
LUXOR (source Wikipedia):
Luxor is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate. The population numbers 506,588 (2012 estimate), with an area of approximately 417 square kilometres (161 sq mi).As the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterized as the world's greatest open-air museum, as the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the River Nile, lie the monuments, temples and tombs of the West Bank Necropolis, which includes the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Thousands of tourists from all around the world arrive annually to visit these monuments, contributing greatly to the economy of the modern city.

THE VALLEY OF KINGS (source Wikipedia):
The Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Gates of the Kings, is a valley in Egypt where, for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, rock cut tombs were excavated for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt).
The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The wadi consists of two valleys, East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and West Valley.
With the 2005 discovery of a new chamber and the 2008 discovery of two further tomb entrances, the valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers (ranging in size from KV54, a simple pit, to KV5, a complex tomb with over 120 chambers). It was the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, as well as a number of privileged nobles. The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues as to the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the Pharaohs.
This area has been a focus of archaeological and egyptological exploration since the end of the eighteenth century, and its tombs and burials continue to stimulate research and interest. In modern times the valley has become famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (with its rumours of the Curse of the Pharaohs), and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. In 1979, it became a World Heritage Site, along with the rest of the Theban Necropolis. Exploration, excavation and conservation continues in the valley, and a new tourist centre has recently been opened.

Luxor Temple: Get Ready for a Retrospective Visit
#Luxor #Egypt #AshrafEzzat
I lost count of how many times I have visited the magnificent temple of Luxor. But somehow, every time I step into the place I feel like it is the first time. I never lose that thrill, that energy when I am on the sacred ground of Luxor Temple’
Actually, I love to refer to it as the temple of King Ramses II, for most of the awe-inspiring royal figures and war scenes engraved on the walls are almost of the legendary king.
But I did not film this short video to highlight Ramses II’s prominent presence in the temple. Rather, I filmed the architecture of the temple, or the geometry of Luxor Temple, typical of the Egyptian architectural archetype for planning & establishing sacred temples (houses of life, ancient Egyptians called them)
I simply wanted to highlight the amazing creation of ancient Egyptian architects, artisans, and builders whose artistic products/artifacts still defy the decaying effect of time. The ancient Egyptians believed in eternity and the work of ancient Egyptian artists/architects simply reflected that sacred concept of conquering time. So this is but a humble (retrospective) tribute to ancient Egyptian artisans & workers, not kings and conquerors.
