Route to Green Island (Lvdao)
From Taipei Airport: Take the MRT (subway) to Taipei Main Station (30 minutes to destination), you will arrive to a big station, get to the 1st floor, walk to the ticket office and get a ticket to Taitung City (Train takes about 7 hours to Taitung Station) I would recommend to stop in this city where you can rent a scooter or a bicycle and do a small trip around. Now you need to get a ticket to Green Island, you can go to the website ( ), book throw your hotel, or buy on Fugang Harbor (If the website is fully booked don't panic just ask to the hotel staff they will call to harbor and do the reservation for you. Have a nice breakfast and go to Taitung Station where buses to Fugang Harbor departs if you are in other location far from the station ask to your hotel staff about recommendations.
Other Options to arrive Green Island would be flight to Lvdao Airport or Rent a Car.

Green Island - Taiwan, January 2018
Green Island, Taitung County, Taiwan. January 14-16th, 2018.
Bryant, Jeffrey, Charles, and I visited Green Island for a couple days.
Green Island is a small volcanic island off the SE coast of Taiwan rich in history, nature, legends, and rocks that resemble gods, people, and animals. We went winter which is the off season. Go if you have the chance because like Orchid Island, it feels like stepping back into time.
Cycling Around Taiwan - Bikepacking Route One - Huan-Dao Bicycle Touring - 環島1號線
Join me on this 1000km bicycle tour around Taiwan on the Haun-Dao (環島). I took the counterclockwise route down the west coast, over the mountainous Shouka climb, and north through the East Rift Valley. Stops at the Mr. Brown scenic area and Taroko Gorge made for an unforgettable trip.
Bike Rental:
mathewbike.com
Mathew and May went out of their way to secure me a bike. Typically you need 2-4 weeks advance reservation. They found me one in about 7 days. Luckily I had no firm departure date. If you are picky about gear then consider bringing your own bike. All the rental bike companies in Taiwan use basic aluminum frames which are adequate for light loads; like a tent, sleeping bag, and clothes.
Season:
Based on the information I read on Paul & Anja's website (link below) I decided on late October and early November. I experienced only two days of rain, but sunburn became a problem. There were rainy forecasts for solid weeks on the east coast before leaving Taipei. This is how I decided on the counterclockwise route. The west coast forecast was dry as a bone. The best antidote for bad weather is more time and a flexible departure schedule.
Distances:
You will hear me say at the end “the tour totaled right near 1000km”. My distance counter got wet on the last leg of the trip and stopped working. I have a picture of it at 985km before it reset itself. That last leg was over 60km so the total was well over 1000km. However the counter started at 85km from cycling around Taipei at the beginning. A trip to Tamsui and Bitan were good warm-ups before the tour. Getting over jet lag is a concern depending where you are from. So, plan for 60-100 km per day over 9 cycling days and you will make the trip on schedule if you follow the downloadable guide below. There are several tangent paths off route one that you can take, including the southernmost point of the island, Kenting, and Taroko Gorge. Whatever you do, don’t skip Taroko.
Other notes:
If you think about deleting the entire west coast from your itinerary, I won’t blame you. Consider the eastern regions between Taipei, Taitung, and Kaohsiung. If you are into hiking, Taroko gorge and the surrounding areas offer several days of activities.
Most cyclist stay at hotels every night on this tour, so camping equipment is not totally necessary. In late October and early November there were always hotel vacancies. The hotel strategy also gets you close to all the exciting food options throughout the country. This is not to be missed! That said, I like to camp when the opportunity arises. The light equipment demands make Taiwan a dream for the road cyclist. Roads are smooth and maintained at a high level. An experienced rider could make the entire journey with a change of clothes and a credit card.

Cold and wet weather forecast this week, temperature to drop as low as 15 degrees in north...
Starting on Monday, the weather will turn cool and rainy in the northern and eastern regions with the arrival of northeasterly winds. The early hours of Tuesday morning are expected to see the coldest weather, with temperatures dropping to as low as 15 degrees in the northeastern regions. On Sunday morning, temperatures atop Yushan dipped to 5 degrees, amid frost-coated grass and tree leaves. It’s not just Yushan Park that will be cold, but also the lowlands as, starting on Monday, a weather front will arrive. Chen Chien-anCWB forecasterA weather front will pass through the Taiwan region and after this the northeast monsoonal winds will strengthen and their influence will linger until Wednesday. The northern and eastern regions, along with the Hengchun Peninsula, will be prone to intermittent rainfall. When the weather front arrives, it won’t just rain. Temperatures will plummet by 5 to 6 degrees. Temperatures in Taiwan’s north could be as low as 16 degrees and the central regions 18 degrees, while Taiwan’s southern regions will experience a range of temperatures from 19 to 29 degrees. Meanwhile, temperatures in the eastern counties of Hualien and Taitung are expected to range from 18 to 26 degrees. Chen Chien-anCWB forecasterOn Tuesday, when we expect the next wave of northeastern monsoonal winds to strengthen, the lowest temperatures in the northern and northeastern regions will be about 16 to 17 degrees. I have not ruled out even lower temperatures of 15 degrees or less in flat areas near the coast. On Thursday, the weather is expected to be a little warmer. However, Taiwan’s northern and eastern regions, along with mountainous regions in central Taiwan could see a small amount of rainfall.

Falling in love with Alishan.mpg
Falling in love with Alishan.
Alishan is best known for its sunrise, sunset, sea of clouds, railways and forest.
This is Alishan station, supposedly Taiwan's largest train station constructed of wood. Nearby is a trail that leads visitors into a forest of millenium red cypresses and Japanese cedars.
Guess how old this red cypress is?
Huang Yuan-ming, Guide
Its diameter at breast height is 13 meters, so it's about 2000 years old. There are 36 ancient trees here. Each of them are numbered and described in the signs.Today we visited some of Alishan's most popular destinations. Next week we'll be hitting some of the lesser traveled paths. Stay tuned!
This one here isn't quite the oldest, but it's the most popular and voted THE sacred tree in Alishan.
Some people make visiting this forest an item on their bucket list. And some couples even choose to get married here to make their wedding even more memorable and sacred.
Not far from the forest is Fenqihu, a town where tourists stop for meals and souvenirs. We have with us today an English friend. Everybody, this is Jack.
Incredibly foggy, it's like this in Fenqihu just about every day. Kind of mystical and enchanting.
This is an old bakery with a popular dessert called train cake.
Liou Jia-rong, Baker
My grandpa would use to sell these on trains. This flavor is Alishan oolong tea.
It really tastes like tea.
It's good.
Another item they sell on trains and also in town are lunch boxes. In its heyday, the entire town can sell 1500 lunches a day.
Michella Jade Weng, Presenter

Sweet potato.
Is it good?
Tasty.
Not bad.
Jack Harrison, Traveler
It was great. I loved the 老街,walking along that street. Same with the train station. It was very cool. It was all foggy and misty when we walked through that, which was very atmospheric.
Today we visited some of Alishan's most popular destinations. Next week we'll be hitting some of the lesser traveled paths. Stay tuned!

TRIBAL Hike in Taroko into the Mountains | 12 Days in Taiwan EP4
Episode 4 features our two day adventure hike in Taroko National Park which led us up various trails to eventually get to a homestay with Truku tribe member whom we call Ah Ma. Spitting with rain almost all the way through, the biggest challenge was coming back down but a little bit of perseverance and wobbly legs got us down to the Shakadang Trail. As we learned later from our guide, Sam, this hike wasn't for beginners!
Of course an episode wouldn't be complete without some sort of train drama as we tried to get back to Taipei and of course more eating once we got there.

[台韓情侶 국제커플 대만여행 #9] 只靠腳踏車環綠島5小時的男子漢(?) Vlog!
