Taiwan - Matthew and Keith Visit Kenting, Taitung, Green Island, Dulan
Hey everyone,
In this video our two brothers Matthew and Keith took the long trip from Canada to come visit Taiwan. We showed them around our city, took them to our work and celebrated a very memorable 20th birthday for Keith. They took a day trip to Taiwan to visit Mount Qixing, Taipei 101 and the CKS Memorial.
The highlight of the visit was our trip down south. We took the train to Kenting and then a 6 hour scooter drive up the east coast to Taitung. While on the east coast we went to Dulan beach, took a boat to Green Island and drove to see the Dragon Bridge (Sanxiantai Bridge). On the way home we also made a fun stop to play some bubble ball soccer. Finally, a trip to Taiwan wouldn't be complete without trying a little betel nut. Thanks for the visit!
Enjoy everybody!

Guanyin Cave (Kuanyin Cave)(Lyudao Township,Taitung Country,Taiwan)
Guanyin Cave is a limestone terrain formed by rising coral reefs that were long eroded by underground rivers. Inside the cave is a stone Guanyin statue. According to legend,a group of fishermen on the island lost their directions in the sea. A fire ball came to sight and guided them to the seashore. They followed the fire ball and found the statue; thus an altar was setup here to make offerings.
Some Taiwanese people travel to Green Island only to pay their respects to the Goddess of Mercy at Guanyin Cave. The underground cavern has a stalagmite that is supposed to look like the deity. You can’t miss it, it’s wrapped in a red blanket. I wouldn’t say that the Guanyin Cave is a must-do on your trip to Green Island. That said, it’s still the most important religious site on the island and the colorful Chinese arch at the entrance is worth a picture or two.

About Donghe (Travel in Taiwan May/June, 2016)
This day we were up before the dawn to hit the Jinzun Recreation Area beach, just south of Donghe village, for a session of red-eyed sunrise enjoyment. Then after breakfast it was back again, to see what it all looked like with somewhat-less-bleary eyes and in full streaming sunlight. The lovely 2km-long bay, on Jinzun Fishing Harbor’s south side, is reached from the highway-side parking lot via a well-built 200m-long wood staircase that takes you through tree cover home to foraging macaques, exotic lizards, and other wild things. At its top is the breezy Jinzun Café, an excellent spot, we proved with lazy, short-of-sleep hazy pleasure, for clifftop ocean viewing from a roofed deck complemented with refreshing fresh-made local-fruit juices and Western-style baked goodies.
After this, an hour-long spell of river rafting. Highway 11 flies high over the Mawuku River atop a very camera-friendly bright-red bridge, off Donghe’s north end. Heading north, take the last side road (ocean side) before the bridge, which leads to a popular surfing location. Half-way along you’ll see the traditional-style thatch-hut buildings of the Amis-run Marongarong Donghe Tribe House (marogarog.tacocity.com.tw; Chinese). This center offers river-rafting outings (NT$250 per person; best book ahead), handicraft DIY, traditional-style feasts, song-and-dance and other performances, and guided deep-mountain 4WD excursions. The traditional-style bamboo rafts are in fact designed for the sea, which the Amis call their “refrigerator.” You sit on stools, but yesteryear fishermen sat on a wood box with a hole, into which catch was stuffed. “Marongarong” – name of this location’s Amis sub-group and their settlement – means “river rapidly flowing”; the massive jumble of river-boulder giants you’ll raft to will reveal why.
The boulders and deep cliff-sided defile they sit in mark the mouth of the meandering Taiyuan Valley. Head inland down County Highway 23, which starts just off the north end of the aforementioned red bridge. A few kilometers in, the road leaps diagonally and dramatically across a close-walled, rugged gorge. You’re in the Dengxian Bridge Recreation Area, a little bit of paradise for Formosan rock macaques. Comfortable with humans, they climb on parked cars, pull on pant legs, peer into bags, and mosey about, looking for handouts.

Taiwan - Taitung County - Dapo Pond
Dapo Pond is an inland freshwater swamp. Due to a good natural environment, there are plentiful animal and plant ecological resources. Numerous species of aquatic plants, birds, frogs and fresh water fish and shrimp, etc. live there. Under the planning and renovation of the Taitung County Government, Dapo Pond currently has a surface area of around 20 hectares, and the surrounding embankments and wetlands are also of around 20 hectares. A footpath and bicycle path encircle the pond, allowing this to become an ideal place where people can do a variety of recreation activities, such as observe the plants, enjoy the birds, go fishing, do healthy walking, or go cycling.

Travel in Taiwan (May/June, 2016)
After picking up our rental car upon arrival from Taipei at Taitung Railway Station, we headed out along Highway 11 to the Zhiben Hot Springs resort area, not far south. Taitung City sits on the coast in the gap between the southern tip of the coastal mountains and the central mountains; the latter fan out and sprawl to the sea south of the city. The resort area lies close to the highway, just inside the mouth of a valley carved out by the Zhiben River. The Japanese developed the area as a healing resort during their 1895-1945 period of colonial rule, after systematically mapping the island’s natural resources upon takeover, at the same time introducing the Taiwanese to hot-spring culture. However, the local indigenous natives had long been using the healing waters, digging soak pools in the rocky riverbed.
The scores of inns and hotels are strung out along riverside County Road 194. At this road’s head you’ll find the entrance to the 110-hectare Zhiben National Forest Recreation Area ( Cross a bright-red 80-meter-long bridge, buy your ticket, and head uphill to the visitor center, which has displays on the local geology and flora/fauna. From there, explore the web of mountain-slope trails between the riverside cliffs and a boundary ridge. If you have the better part of the day you can consider tackling them all, but be sure to conquer the staircase Brave Man’s Slope Trail – steep, 320 meters long, rising 150 meters, 792 steps – which leads you past magnificent white-bark banyan trees. The roots of the giant Thousand Root Banyan create a fairyland setting you’ll expect to see forest spirits flitting through. There are fine views toward the ocean from the highest trail-points.
Back to Highway 11, and up to the Liji Badlands, directly north of Taitung City. They constitute the coastal range’s southern tip, on the Beinan River’s north side, city on the south. What are they, and what makes them “bad”? What you’ll see is a kilometers-long mountain wall riven with deep gullies. Enjoy them from viewing areas along County Road 45 that feature lookout pavilions, footpaths, and Chinese/English explanatory signage. You are in a grand outdoor geology museum: standing on this side of the river, you’re on the Philippine Sea Plate; peering across at the other side’s sedimentary hills, you’re looking at the Eurasian Plate. These are the two key players in Taiwan’s mighty, ongoing geotectonic drama, which among other things has given birth to the island’s scores of hot-spring sites. The badlands are primarily made up of fine mudstone pellets, long at the sea’s bottom, that are too light to go down under the Eurasian Plate with the rest of the Philippine Sea Plate. Now exposed, the unstable sediment suffers deep erosive scarring, creating a façade of ferocious, menacing demeanor. The forlorn, desolate landscape has also given rise to a nickname – Moon World.

In this vlog I take you around with me for a few nights in Eastern Taiwan, specifically the coastal cities of Hualien and Taitung.
Taroko National Park is just a bus ride from central Hualien, and visitors can enjoy all kinds of activities there like hiking, birdwatching, and more. Unfortunately I went during a typhoon, so I had to cut my hike on the Shakadong Trail a bit short!
Taitung is a bit farther south and has equally as amazing access to nature, with the Dulan Forest just to the North which is accessible by bus. I loved seeing the majestic Sansiantai Bridge in real life, and the various aboriginal sculptures and art installations seen all along the coast.
MyTaiwanTour was a great local resource in helping me coordinate logistics of my trip. Whatever you are looking to do in Taiwan, they've got you covered:

2 days flight school training camp at Taitung, Taiwan
This is my 2 days flight training camp at Taitung Apex flight training school, Taiwan's first and only flight school on 28,29th of April. Cost me $999 USD, but it's an experience that will never be forgotten.
If you dream of becoming a pilot, come to Apex flight school, because it provide the best value among any other flight schools. For $85,000 USD, you can get your commercial pilot license. But wait, if you have travel sickness when taking ferry or airplane, then you are out. And yes, they teach classes in English, half of the instructors are from Europe and North America. Cheers.

Train Trip Part 3 -- Kaohsiung - Taitung (火車之旅第三: 高雄-台東)
Third part of our recent railway trip from Taichung to Taitung and back. After visiting the art museum in Kaohsiung, we continued south, made a briefs stop at the Fangye Signal Station, went to Taimali Beach, and interviewed the friendly guys at the Xuanwu Temple in Taitung City.

Down the Coast from Kaohsiung, Across the Mountains, and Up the Coast to Zhiben
South of Kaohsiung, as the train moved through more luxuriant farmland the central mountains and sparkling Taiwan Strait started to close in on one another. Not far south of Fangliao town, a Day 2 stop to be introduced later, they met. The train jumped from the plain to hug mountainside above the rocky coast. The panorama was striking, large Little Liuqiu island out in the strait, Kaohsiung’s skyscraper cluster looking like a miniature model-set to the north. After a few minutes came a turn inward for the cross-mountain run.
The many tunnels mean this region’s sparsely populated low mountains are conquered quickly. A special scenic stop was made at Fangye, a traffic-control signal station not visited by regular trains. Westbound trains burst from the mountain-base tunnel beside the station, the South Link Line’s highest, making for thrill-inducing head-on photos.
After our train popped out on the east coast it trundled along for some time, northward bound, high above the pounding Pacific breakers. The most exquisitely “tropical Eden-esque” of the between-tunnel sections is just south of pretty Duoliang Railway Station; on the Day 2 return the train sauntered along here at just 25kph, maximizing viewing time and pleasure.
The steep cliffsides give way to farm-decorated sloping mountainside around Taimali, a Paiwan tribe village. Everyone disembarked and boarded the coaches that then road-cruised us to all destinations until the Day 2 train return. First up was the Millennium Dawn Memorial Park, on the section of a wide, kilometers-long, coconut palm-fringed beach fronting the village. The name commemorates Year 2000 first-sunrise celebrations held here.
Landing in Taitung Taiwan flying from Green-Island on Dornier 228-200 Turbo-Prop 1080i 飛從台東到綠島(落地)台灣
飛從台東到綠島(落地)台灣. The short flight from Green-Island, Taiwan only takes about 9 minutes to Taitung. I was sea-sick of the ferry and decided to choose that option. Highly recommendable. The price is twice that of the ferry at 980 NT however well worth its money. And still $30 US for a flight is not really much even short. Prices never change regardless how late you book however the flights are usually fully booked.
Info on Green-Island:
#greenisland #Taiwan #camping at Ziping #campsite introduction campingsite #Ziping 綠島紫坪露營區
On the way going back to the mainland Taiwan, I decided stopped by green land for 3 days. I didn't plan for the trip, nor did I know where to stay after the arrival. I was a bit worried cuz the weather in that afternoon didn't look good. Originally I just wanted looking for a spot for random camping, but I gave up cuz it looked like gonna rain, and I didn't have much time finding a good camping spot. So I just googled and ended up in this camp site which is very nice!
裡松溫泉,台東縣 Lisong hot springs, Taiwan
Lisong hot springs are the most beautiful in Taiwan without a doubt, and nobody has done them - or the tortuous journey to them - justice with a decent English write-up anywhere. One day I may write a blog and attempt to do just that. For now:
DO: Camp at the bottom of the trail in the little forest clearing above the beach area near the hot springs. Take your rubbish home. Leave a full weekend for the visit if you're coming from Taipei.
DON'T: Assume it will be an easy drive or hike/climb. Seriously.
