Αναφέρεται στη μυθολογία πως ήταν ένας βράχος που κουβαλούσε στα χέρια της η Θεά Αθηνά και της έπεσε έπειτα από μια κακιά είδηση που της έφερε ένα κοράκι. Από τότε τα κοράκια έγιναν μαύρα, λέει ο μύθος. Ο Λυκαβηττός έχει το εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Γεωργίου στην κορυφή του και λειτουργεί και τελεφερίκ.
(EN) The hill is a popular tourist destination and can be ascended by the Lycabettus Funicular, a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki. (The railway station can be found at Aristippou street). Lycabettus appears in various legends. Popular stories suggest it was once the refuge of wolves, possibly the origin of its name (which means the one (the hill) that is walked by wolves). Mythologically, Lycabettus is credited to Athena, who created it when she dropped a mountain she had been carrying from Pallene for the construction of the Acropolis after the box holding Erichthonius was opened.
The hill also has a large open-air theater at the top, which has housed many Greek and International concerts
(F) Le Lycabette (en grec ancien Λυκαβηττός) ou Lykavittos est une montagne de l'Attique appartenant à la chaîne du Pentélique.
Formée au Crétacé, elle est constituée de calcaire. Elle culmine à 277 mètres et constitue le point le plus élevé de la ville d'Athènes : le panorama qu'elle offre sur la ville en fait une destination touristique appréciée. Un funiculaire permet de rejoindre le sommet où se trouve l'église Saint-Georges (Hagios Georgios), bâtie au xixe siècle.
L'étymologie de son nom n'est pas assurée. On a pensé, par exemple que cette hauteur était un refuge de loups (en grec : lukoi) ou encore qu'elle aurait porté un sanctuaire dédié à Lycos, fils de Pandion (en grec : lukios). Il semblerait qu'il faille trouver une explication sur l'existence en grec ancien d'un terme lukabas signifiant : « année ». En effet, on sait qu'en Allemagne méridionale et en Suisse, on appelle Jahresberg des montagnes sur le sommet desquelles l'apparition de soleil indique le commencement du printemps, et donc de l'année, dans l'ancien calendrier julien (en allemand Jahr signifie « année »). Il est possible que le Lycabette, vu d'un certain endroit, ait eu une fonction analogue, mais cela n'apparaît sur aucun document ancien.

Mit seiner Höhe von 277 m ist er die höchste Erhebung im Stadtzentrum und bietet damit eine gute Aussicht auf die Sehenswürdigkeiten Athens. Bei guten Sichtverhältnissen lässt sich von hier aus der ganze Großraum Athen und seine Kessellage zwischen Gebirgszügen und der Saronischen Golf im Süden überblicken.
Es bieten sich zwei Möglichkeiten, den Gipfel zu erklimmen: Zum einen die Fahrt mit der Standseilbahn, deren Station sich in der Odós Aristíppou befindet, auf die man stößt, wenn man der ansteigenden Odós Ploutárchou folgt. Sehr viel lohnender, wenn auch anstrengender, ist der Fußweg zum Gipfel über die Stufen durch den zwischen 1908 und 1918 vom Verein der Waldfreunde aufgeforsteten Wald. Der Aufstieg bietet Aussichtspunkte auf die Akropolis, das antike Stadion, das für die Olympischen Spiele von 1896 wieder aufgebaut wurde, sowie auf den Hafen vom Piräus.
Auf dem Gipfel befindet sich eine Aussichtsterasse um die kleine Sankt-Georgs-Kapelle (Ágios Geórgios) mit Blick auf das gesamte Stadtgebiet Athens sowie ein Restaurant der gehobenen Preisklasse. Der Lykabettus ist trotz seiner Aussichtsmöglichkeiten nicht in gleichem Maße von Touristen überlaufen wie andere Sehenswürdigkeiten Athens.
Weiter unterhalb der Bergspitze, am nördlichen Ende, befindet sich außerdem ein großes Freilichttheater, welches auch mit dem Auto erreicht werden kann. Dort finden jedes Jahr im Sommer Konzerte und Theateraufführungen statt.
