Lycian Rock Tombs
The ancient Lycians are among the most enigmatic people of antiquity because little historical record has been left behind them. But what has been discovered reveals a fascinating people culturally distinct from the rest of the ancient world at the time. Around twenty major sites remain today with the Lycians' unusual funerary architecture, including incredible rock-cut tombs carved into cliff faces dominating the breathtaking unspoiled land of Lycia.
Lycia is situated in the region which is today the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, and the Burdur province, which is further inland. The Lycian civilisation is mentioned in the historical records of ancient Egypt as well as the Hittite Empire. By the 6th century BC, however, the Lycians were incorporated into the Achaemenid Empire. One of the most interesting features of the Lycians is their funerary culture, as seen in the incredible tombs that they built.
There are several types of Lycian tombs, the most common of which is the rock-cut tomb. The earliest examples of these are said to have been carved in the 5th century BC, and can be found in places such as Myra and Amasia. These tombs were carved directly into the rock face, usually into a cliff, which makes them an amazing sight to behold. It is said that the Lycians believed that a mythical winged creature would carry them off into the afterlife, which is the reason for the position of their tombs on cliffs.
Another interesting aspect of these tombs is its reflection of domestic life. The tombs are often carved like the façade of Lycian houses, and usually have one or two levels, but sometimes even three. In addition, the tombs usually held more than one body, most likely of people who were related to each other. Thus, it seems that familial ties and kinship were maintained even after death. Nevertheless, rock-cut tombs are not unique to the Lycians, as similar structures can be found in other parts of the Mediterranean, such as Petra in Jordan and Cyrenaica in Libya.

Spooky Lycian Rock Tombs - Fethiye Turkey 2018 Travel Vlog
I left Kas and took a bus to Fethiye Turkey, my first stop was at the ancient Amyntas Rock tombs, used by the Lycians to store dead bodies, I then walked down the umbrella street, has a casual stroll to the beach where I saw a magnificent sunset, then taking a quick peak at the rock tombs again at night to see them lit up, looking ever more spookier.

Lycian Rock Tombs - TURKEY | TRAVEL lust
Carved into the side of a Turkish mountain are what look to be the entrances to countless temples, but are in fact the ornate facade of ancient Lycian tombs.
The Lycians believed that their dead were carried to the afterlife by magic winged creatures and thus they placed their honored dead in geographically high places such as the cliffside. Dating back to the 4th century, many of the numerous entryways are adorned with tall Romanesque columns and intricate reliefs, a bit duller from centuries of weathering. The older tombs are often no more than unremarked holes dug into the rock. Despite the external grandeur, the interior of the tombs are spare chambers cut into the rock with a simple monolith inside to display the body and the rooms are otherwise empty from hundreds of years worth of looting.

The next place is Dalyan. Sweeping rivers and rustic townscape give travelers peace of mind. It was once a crisis of natural degradation due to tourism development, but it was able to maintain its beautiful appearance with the efforts of villagers and environmental groups. The Moon River flowing into the Mediterranean Sea. Here, beside the Dalyan River, there is the Kaunos Cave tomb in the Kingdom of Caria around 900 BC. A stone tomb built like a sculpture on a steep cliff, the higher the status, the higher the tomb was made. The stone tomb, which looks like a temple, suggests the dignity and splendor of the kingdom at the time. However, there is a cemetery of the Dalyan people on the plains under the cave tomb. Is this a good spot in Dalyan? Or is it the wind of the people who want to keep the beautiful nature of Da-Yan close to death? When a person leaves the world, they move from the other side to the ship and ask here. There are not only Muslims but also people of different religions. People who love Dalyan here do not want to leave here. Follow the will to bury here, not many, but there are about 3 to 5 foreigners.

Lycia Rock Cut Tombs Dalyan Anatolia Turkey
Lycia (Lycian: ???????????????????????? Trm̃mis; Greek: Λυκία Lykia, Turkish: Likya) was a geopolitical region in Anatolia in what are now the provinces of Antalya and Muğla on the southern coast of Turkey, and Burdur Province inland. Known to history since the records of ancient Egypt and the Hittite Empire in the Late Bronze Age, it was populated by speakers of the Luwian language group. Written records began to be inscribed in stone in the Lycian language (a later form of Luwian) after Lycia's involuntary incorporation into the Achaemenid Empire in the Iron Age. At that time (546 BC) the Luwian speakers were decimated, and Lycia received an influx of Persian speakers.
Lycia fought for the Persians in the Persian Wars, but on the defeat of the Achaemenid Empire by the Greeks, it became intermittently a free agent. After a brief membership in the Athenian Empire, it seceded and became independent (its treaty with Athens had omitted the usual non-secession clause), was under the Persians again, revolted again, was conquered by Mausolus of Caria, returned to the Persians, and went under Macedonian hegemony at the defeat of the Persians by Alexander the Great. Due to the influx of Greek speakers and the sparsity of the remaining Lycian speakers, Lycia was totally Hellenized under the Macedonians. The Lycian language disappeared from inscriptions and coinage.
On defeating Antiochus III in 188 BC the Romans gave Lycia to Rhodes for 20 years, taking it back in 168 BC. In these latter stages of the Roman republic Lycia came to enjoy freedom as part of the Roman protectorate. The Romans validated home rule officially under the Lycian League in 168 BC. This native government was an early federation with republican principles; these later came to the attention of the framers of the United States Constitution, influencing their thoughts.[1]
Despite home rule under republican principles Lycia was not a sovereign state and had not been since its defeat by the Carians. In 43 AD the Roman emperor Claudius dissolved the league. Lycia was incorporated into the Roman Empire with a provincial status. It became an eparchy of the Eastern, or Byzantine Empire, continuing to speak Greek even after being joined by communities of Turkish language speakers in the early 2nd millennium. After the fall of the Byzantine Empire in the 15th century, Lycia was under the Ottoman Empire, and was inherited by the Turkish Republic on the fall of that empire. The Greeks were withdrawn when the border between Greece and Turkey was negotiated in 1923.

Dalyan Tomb Hunting
After seeing the impressive Lycian tombs, circa 400 BC from a distance in Dalyan town we were told by a local shopkeeper that there were other, much more remote tombs dotted about the area. This films shows just one of the tombs we located and were able to climb to and actually explore close to the road between the villages of Mergenli and Karadonlar east of Dalyan
